YOU ASKED, AND GKRP 2047 DELIVERED!

From 16 to 19 May 2026, the GKRP 2047 Open House welcomed participants from across Karachi to explore the findings and analysis on Karachi’s current situation and context. Taking the form of an exhibition, it provided an overview of the journey and the stakeholder engagement undertaken so far on developing the GKRP.

The findings were presented across a series of themes, including governance and institutions; economics, industry, investment, and PPPs; environment, disaster risk, and climate change; housing and katchi abadis; community facilities; growth and land use; transport and mobility; recreation, open space, and cultural heritage; energy and digital infrastructure; solid waste management; water supply; and sewage, wastewater, and drainage systems. These findings establish a baseline understanding of Karachi's current situation and identify key trends, challenges, and opportunities.

The event generated enthusiastic participation and meaningful discussion. Attendees shared their experiences, insights, and concerns, contributing valuable feedback through guided discussions with the project team, interactive notes placed on the exhibition boards, and numerous feedback forms. Together with the Situation Analysis, this feedback will help guide the next stage of the plan's development, including the formulation of its aims, objectives, goals, and long-term vision for Karachi.

We were honoured to meet so many of you and, most importantly, we are listening!

Many of you asked whether the boards presented during the Open House would be made publicly available. In line with the project's commitment to transparency, participation, and open access to information, the boards are now available on the project website (https://gkrp2047.com/boards2/) for everyone to explore.

Today is World Bicycle Day, when the humble bicycle is celebrated across the world.

World Bicycle Day draws attention to the benefits of using the bicycle - a simple, affordable, clean and sustainable means of transportation. The bicycle contributes to cleaner air, reduces congestion, and makes education, healthcare and other social services more accessible to the most vulnerable members of society. It promotes economic growth and equality while bolstering the fight against climate change, a critical step to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/).

On 15 March 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution (http://undocs.org/A/RES/76/255) on integration of mainstream cycling into public transportation systems for sustainable development. It emphasised the bicycle’s role as an instrument of sustainable transportation conveying a positive message to foster sustainable consumption and production, resulting in a beneficial impact on climate.

As we work on developing the Greater Karachi Regional Plan, we will look into how cycling can form part of the mobility mix that supports movement across the city. How can we use the benefits of cycling to leverage transformation of the city?

Day 2 Highlights | GKRP Open House Exhibition
On Sunday, 17th May, the GKRP consultant team had the honour of welcoming Mr. Murtaza Wahab, Mayor of Karachi, to the ongoing Open House Exhibition at Khalikdina Hall.

During his visit, the Mayor was guided through the exhibition and briefed on the current progress of the project, as well as the next steps towards shaping a comprehensive regional plan for Karachi.
Concluding the visit, the Mayor shared his thoughts and emphasised the importance of collaboration in creating a master plan “which is focused on inclusivity and is sustainable.”

We are grateful for his visit and continued support towards building a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable future for Karachi.

🏠 The open house exhibition remains open to the public until Tuesday the 19th of May, and we warmly invite citizens, stakeholders, and communities to visit, engage, and share their feedback as we collectively shape the future of Karachi.

Day 1 Highlights | GKRP Open House Exhibition
We were honoured to welcome two school groups from Cradle Welfare Organisation (https://www.cradlewelfare.org) to the GKRP2047 Open House on Saturday, represented by Mr. Saqeeb-us-Salem and Dr. Fatima Asim, along with their teaching staff.

Cradle Welfare Organisation is doing deeply meaningful work by supporting underprivileged children and their families — many of whom are already engaged in informal labour — through education, mentorship, internships, and pathways toward better opportunities and employment. Their visit brought important perspectives into the conversation about Karachi’s future and reminded us why inclusive planning matters.
The GKRP2047 Open House invites everyone to explore the current realities of the Greater Karachi Region and join the conversation about the city we live in today.
