On May 15, 2026, the National Disability & Development Forum (NDF) Pakistan, the implementing partner of the Livelihood Restoration Plan (LRP), in collaboration with the Government of Sindh and the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) of the Solid Waste Emergency & Efficiency Project - SWEEP, organized the Toolkits, Certificates & Special Assistance Devices Distribution Ceremony for the waste pickers of Village Haji Ibrahim Goth at the LFS Jam Chakro Landfill Site in Karachi.
The event was attended by a high-level government delegation led by the Honourable Advisor to the Chief Minister of Sindh for Human Settlement, Spatial Development & Social Housing, Syed Najmi Alam, and the Honourable Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government of Sindh, Mr. Qasim Siraj Soomro. Senior officials and the Project Director SWEEP, Mr. Muhammad Usman Moazzam (PAS), were also present.
During the session, Advisor to the Chief Minister of Sindh and the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government of Sindh were briefed on the progress of the LRP under SWEEP. The LRP facilitated vocational training, transitional allowance distribution, non-formal education for children, PPE provision, health and hygiene sessions, CNIC facilitation, financial inclusion, awareness activities, and job placement support for the communities at LFS Jam Chakro and GTS locations. Assistive devices were also distributed among persons with specific needs.
The Advisor to the Chief Minister of Sindh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing a clean, modern, and environmentally sustainable solid waste management infrastructure for Karachi through inclusive development strategies.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government of Sindh emphasized strengthening skills, improving working conditions, and expanding access to essential services for waste-picker families, ensuring an inclusive city where no one is left behind, especially vulnerable groups.
The Project Director SWEEP stated that the LRP aims to transform vulnerability into opportunity by strengthening livelihoods, enhancing capacity building through vocational skills, and ensuring long-term improvements in the quality of life of the waste-picker communities of LFS Jam Chakro.
