Who doesn’t love a nap? Lions are professional cat nappers and spend a substantial portion of their daily lives napping and resting. A lion may sleep up to 20 hours a day, which may make some of us a little jealous.

This World Lion Day, we’re raising awareness about what’s needed to help secure a future for lions. Across Africa, only about 23,000 lions remain. They face threats from a multi-billion-dollar illegal wildlife trade, and the wild spaces they depend on are getting smaller and more fragmented. This increases human-wildlife conflict as lions enter community areas and prey on livestock, threatening human safety and livelihoods while putting lions at risk of retaliatory killings. Protecting and restoring habitat connectivity is critical to helping lions move safely and freely.

That’s why WWF, alongside local partners and communities, is monitoring lion populations and reducing human-wildlife conflict to help protect these iconic big cats.
