📣PNP Completes Investigation Into Zamboanga School Shooting, Targets Gaps in Gun Safety and School Security

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has completed its investigation into the August 18 shooting incident at a private school in Barangay Tumaga, Zamboanga City, establishing the circumstances that led to the tragedy and filing the appropriate complaint based on the evidence gathered.
The incident resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to another. The investigation, led by the Police Regional Office 9 through a Special Investigation Task Group, brought together investigators and forensic personnel who examined witness accounts, CCTV footage, physical and digital evidence, school records, and firearm-related evidence to piece together what happened.
Based on the findings, investigators found no evidence that the incident was carried out as part of a conspiracy involving any group, organization, or other individuals. They also found no established school-related or personal grievance that could sufficiently explain the shooting. The investigation, however, identified prior preparation and exposure to violent online material as among the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The probe also showed that gaps in firearm safekeeping and accountability allowed unauthorized access to the fi****ms used, while security deficiencies in the school, particularly in entry and exit screening, contributed to the circumstances of the incident.
With these findings, a complaint for Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Homicide and Physical Injury was filed before the proper prosecutorial authority against the registered owner of the fi****ms used in the incident and a school security personnel, based on the evidence established during the investigation.
Chief PNP Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said the PNP's duty was not only to determine what happened but also to ensure that the investigation was conducted fairly and responsibly.
“We owe it to the families and to the school community to get the facts right. Hindi puwedeng puro assumptions. We follow the evidence, respect due process, and let the proper legal process determine accountability. At the same time, we have to learn from what happened and close the gaps that may put others at risk,” PGen Nartatez said.
He also reminded firearm owners to exercise greater care in securing their weapons and urged schools and security personnel to regularly review access controls and screening measures, while encouraging parents and the public to promptly raise concerns involving threats, violent behavior, or other warning signs.
The completed investigation reflects the PNP's continuing effort to strengthen evidence-based and responsive police operations under its Focused Agenda, particularly Enhanced Managing Police Operations, in support of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s call for accountable and effective public service. It likewise reinforces the commitment of the Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat, at Nararamdaman.

PNP ANTI-DRUG DRIVE NETS OVER ₱227 MILLION IN ILLEGAL DRUGS, 12 ARRESTED IN CORDILLERA

The Philippine National Police (PNP) intensified its campaign against illegal drugs in the Cordillera region, resulting in the seizure of more than ₱227 million worth of illegal drugs and the arrest of 12 individuals in operations conducted from August 10 to 16, 2026.

Police units in the Cordillera Administrative Region carried out 17 operations during the period, including ma*****na eradication activities, buy-bust operations, implementation of warrants, and police responses. These efforts led to the recovery of approximately 1.12 million fully grown ma*****na plants, 50,000 seedlings, 150 grams of dried ma*****na leaves and fruiting tops, and 8.49 grams of suspected shabu, with a combined estimated value of ₱227,015,732 based on standard drug pricing.

The 12 arrested individuals are now facing appropriate charges under Republic Act No. 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. The operations were carried out by police units across the region, with significant recoveries recorded in Kalinga, Mountain Province, Baguio City, Apayao, and Benguet.

Chief PNP Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said the results show the importance of staying consistent in the fight against illegal drugs, especially in areas where ma*****na cultivation continues to be a concern.

“Malaking bagay na napipigilan natin ang mga ito bago pa makarating sa ating mga komunidad. Pero hindi dito nagtatapos ang trabaho. Tuloy lang tayo, kasi bawat operasyon may katumbas na mga pamilyang pinoprotektahan natin,” PGen Nartatez said.

The operations form part of the PNP’s Focused Agenda, particularly Enhanced Managing Police Operations, which strengthens police action through focused operations, proper coordination, and responsible enforcement while respecting the rights of every person.

The PNP continues to work with local communities and partner agencies in support of the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to keep communities safe and protect families, especially young people, from the effects of illegal drugs.

PGen Nartatez said the PNP will continue to focus on areas where illegal drugs are being produced or moved, while ensuring that police operations remain within the bounds of the law.
The PNP will sustain lawful and focused operations against illegal drugs while strengthening prevention, community cooperation, and accountability, consistent with its commitment to a “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat, at Nararamdaman.”

BARANGAY LEADERS HELP TURN OVER 20 LOOSE FI****MS IN ANTIQUE

The Philippine National Police (PNP) continues to strengthen its partnership with communities as local leaders in Antique helped facilitate the voluntary turnover of 20 loose fi****ms and six rounds of ammunition, reflecting the growing role of citizens in keeping their communities safe.

The fi****ms were voluntarily turned over on August 14 during a community engagement activity in Valderrama, Antique, with the participation of 17 Punong Barangays who coordinated with local police in encouraging residents to surrender fi****ms that were not properly authorized or registered.

The turned-over fi****ms consisted of eight homemade long-barreled bolt-action shotguns, ten .38-caliber revolvers, and two .22 Magnum fi****ms. The activity formed part of the continuing police effort to account for loose fi****ms and encourage their voluntary surrender through appropriate channels.

For Chief PNP Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., the accomplishment shows what can happen when police work is matched by community cooperation.

“Kapag may tiwala, mas madaling magtulungan. Hindi lang ito tungkol sa mga baril na isinuko—mas mahalaga na may mga barangay leaders na handang makipag-ugnayan at tumulong sa pagpapanatili ng seguridad sa kanilang lugar. We want that kind of partnership to grow, because public safety works best when police and communities move together.”

The initiative is consistent with the PNP Focused Agenda, particularly Enhanced Managing Police Operations, which emphasizes responsive police work supported by coordination and community participation. It also supports the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in promoting safer and more peaceful communities through strengthened public cooperation and responsible law enforcement.

The PNP encourages individuals who may still have loose or unauthorized fi****ms to coordinate with the nearest police station and follow the proper procedures for their lawful turnover. PNP ARRESTS SIX MOST WANTED PERSONS FACING MURDER, R**E CASES IN NATIONWIDE OPERATIONS

Six high-value wanted persons were arrested in separate police operations across the country on August 18, 2026, as the Philippine National Police (PNP) continued its nationwide efforts to locate individuals with standing warrants and ensure that they face the appropriate legal proceedings.

The operations resulted in the arrest of six regional-level Most Wanted Persons, including the No. 1 Most Wanted Person in the Cordillera Administrative Region, the No. 2 in Isabela, and the No. 5 in Agusan del Sur. Three other wanted persons listed among the No. 7 and No. 10 in the Soccsksargen area were also apprehended, including one arrested in Maguindanao del Sur through coordinated operations involving police units from different areas.

In Dolores, Abra, authorities arrested the No. 1 Most Wanted Person in the Cordillera region, who was facing 39 counts of Qualified R**e of a Minor. The arrest was carried out through a warrant of arrest and coordinated efforts involving local police, the PNP Special Action Force, Regional Mobile Force units, and intelligence personnel.

In Cauayan City, Isabela, the No. 2 Most Wanted Person in the province was served a warrant for Murder while under custody at the Cauayan City District Jail. In Trento, Agusan del Sur, the No. 5 regional wanted person was arrested in connection with two counts of Qualified R**e of a Minor.

Three other wanted persons were apprehended in Maguindanao del Sur, Sultan Kudarat, and Cotabato. These included a No. 7 Most Wanted Person in PRO 12 wanted for two counts of Murder, and two No. 10 wanted persons in Sultan Kudarat and Cotabato, facing cases for Murder and three counts of R**e, respectively.

The warrants served in the reported cases carried no bail recommendation, based on the court-issued processes. The arrested persons were placed under the custody of the appropriate police or custodial authorities pending the next stages of their respective cases.

Chief PNP Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said the operations demonstrate the value of sustained police work and coordination, particularly when dealing with wanted persons who may have remained outside the reach of authorities.

“We remain focused on doing the job right—from locating persons with standing warrants to carrying out the arrest properly. May proseso tayong sinusunod, at tungkulin nating tiyaking maayos ang bawat hakbang habang hinahayaan ang korte na magpasya sa kaso,” PGen Nartatez said.

The PNP stressed that the arrests were made pursuant to warrants issued by the courts and that the rights of the arrested persons remain protected throughout the legal process. Their guilt or innocence will ultimately be determined by the courts.

The sustained operations are part of the PNP’s Focused Agenda, particularly Enhanced Managing Police Operations, which promotes coordinated and accountable police action in addressing wanted persons and other public safety concerns.
