MERCEDES ACQUIRES FOGGING MACHINE TO INTENSIFY DENGUE PREVENTION EFFORTS

In a bid to protect residents from dengue fever, the Barangay Council of Mercedes under the leadership of Chairman Romeo Fayluga has procured a ULV Cold Fogging Machine.

The procurement was made possible through a Barangay Resolution sponsored and authored by Kagawad Irene Manaligod, Chairwoman of the Committee on Health, during a regular session last August. The machine arrived today and was formally received and documented at the barangay office.

Kagawad Manaligod, under the supervision of Chairman Fayluga, has been at the forefront of the barangay’s anti-dengue campaign. She spearheaded several fumigation activities and the distribution of flyers to educate residents on how to prevent dengue.

Chairman Fayluga has also been actively involved in the fight against dengue. He led multiple cleanup drives in different streets and along riverbanks to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

The City Health Office continues to remind the public that dengue cases remain a concern in Zamboanga City, especially during the rainy season. Dengue is a viral illness transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which breeds in stagnant and clean water.

Under the Local Government Code and the Dengue Prevention and Control Act of 2016, local government units are mandated to lead vector control activities. These include regular fogging, clean-up drives, larviciding, and massive information campaigns to reduce mosquito populations and prevent outbreaks.

Barangay officials are the frontliners in this campaign, tasked to mobilize communities in practicing the β€œ4S Strategy”: Search and destroy breeding sites, Self-protection measures, Seek early consultation, and Support fogging in hotspot areas.

β€œWe are committed to serving our constituents and keeping them safe from dengue,” Chairman Fayluga said. β€œWith the new fogging machine and continued community support, we hope to further strengthen our preventive measures in Mercedes.”

The barangay urged residents to continue practicing proper waste disposal, cover water containers, and participate in weekly clean-up activities to help curb the spread of dengue.

MERCEDES BARANGAY, CITY VET TEAM CONDUCT MASS ANTI-RABIES VACCINATION DRIVE

Personnel from the City Veterinarian’s Office under Dr. Arcadio Cavan, in coordination with the Barangay Council of Mercedes led by Chairman Romeo Fayluga, conducted a mass anti-rabies vaccination drive for dogs and cats in the barangay, Thursday.

The vaccination teams were deployed across different zones and conducted house-to-house visits to ensure maximum coverage. Pet owners were urged to have their dogs and cats inoculated against rabies, a fatal but preventable viral disease.

Residents showed strong cooperation and voluntarily presented their pets for vaccination. Barangay Kagawads and Tanods accompanied the CityVet personnel to assist in the activity and maintain order during the rounds.

Health officials stressed that rabies remains a serious public health threat. The anti-rabies vaccine provides immunity to dogs and cats and prevents the transmission of the virus to humans through bites or scratches.

The Department of Health recommends that all dogs and cats 3 months old and above be vaccinated annually. Vaccinated pets also help establish herd immunity in the community, reducing the risk of rabies outbreaks.

The city government continues to push for 100% pet vaccination and responsible pet ownership to achieve a rabies-free Zamboanga City.

β€œThis kind of activity is very important for the safety of everyone,” Chairman Fayluga said. β€œBy vaccinating our pets, we are protecting not only our families but also our neighbors from the dangers of rabies.”

The barangay thanked the City Veterinarian’s Office for its continued support in bringing vital veterinary services directly to the communities.

Galugad Continues in Mercedes; Minors, Motorists Apprehended for Violations

The joint Oplan Galugad of Barangay Mercedes and the Culianan Police Station continued with its latest operation in Zone II and Zone III, resulting in the apprehension of some minors for curfew violations and motorcyclists for traffic offenses.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of Barangay Chairman Romeo Fayluga and Police Major Mohammar Mariwa of the Culianan Police Station.

According to barangay officials, members of the Barangay Tanod Force who took part in the operation were Rommel Perez, Rogelio Villanueva, Manuel Elavasantos, Ricardo Belderol, Jose Rizaldo Cristobal, and Ramil Mapalo.

During the synchronized patrol, authorities apprehended some minors found outside their residences during curfew hours and motorcyclists caught violating traffic regulations, including failure to wear crash helmets.

Officials said the apprehended minors were turned over to barangay authorities and their parents were called for proper disposition, while the traffic violators were issued citations in accordance with existing city ordinances.

The barangay leadership urged residents, especially parents, to cooperate by reminding their children to observe curfew hours and by encouraging motorists to comply with traffic rules.

Community Volunteers of Azcuna Resettlement Site Extend Aid To Fire Victims in Mercedes

Community Volunteers of Azcuna Resettlement Site distributed relief goods to fire victims in View Highland, Zone 1, Barangay Mercedes on Monday, August 25, 2026.

The relief items were personally received by the Perez couple, who were among those affected by the recent fire incident.

According to the group, most of its members were also former fire victims before they were relocated to Azcuna Resettlement Site. Because of this shared experience, they said they deeply empathize with the Perez family.

β€œWe know how it feels to be a fire victim. In an instant, you are left with nothing β€” not even clothes to wear,” a representative of the Community Volunteers said.

The group noted that the donation drive was properly coordinated with Barangay Chairman Romeo Fayluga to ensure that aid would reach the intended beneficiaries.

Chairman Fayluga lauded the initiative of the Community Volunteers , saying such acts of compassion reflect the bayanihan spirit among resettled communities.

Barangay officials said they continue to assist fire-affected families in View Highland while coordinating with the city government and other groups for additional support.
