Good nutrition is a basic need of every human being. Nutrition keeps us heathy and productive throughout life. Among the many nutrients our baby needs are iodineand selenium these two essential minerals that are often overlooked. Even if we need it in minute amount, they play a major role in maintaining proper body function, especially for growth, brain development and thyroid health.
Iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones which regulate growth, energy and brain development. Lack of iodine can lead to iodinedeficiency disorders such as goiter, leaving difficulties and developmental delay in children. Pregnant women and also vulnerable because lack of iodine may affect the mental and physical growth of the fetus. Good sources of iodine includes iodine salt, seaweeds, fishes, shellfishes, shrimps, milk and eggs.
Selenium on the other hand, helps protect our body from disease by strengthening the immune system and acting as an antioxidant. It works together with iodine to keep our thyroid function well. Lack od selenium may increase the risk of fatigue, weakened our immune system and thyroid problem. Good sources of selenium are tuna, sardines, chicken, eggs, brown rice, sun flower seeds, and nuts.
Through this advocacy we educate the public on good nutrition and we can promote good choices of food that may prevent diseases and support health growth. Let us advocate for a better nutrition through good food choices. Eat variety of food every day, thereโs no single food that keep us healthy. What foods we choose today may affect our heath in the future.
