How TUBA got its name

In the early days, it was believed that fresh water fish existed abundantly in the rivers of the region, where the Poblacion is located. As an industrious man, he cultivated several kinds of crops, among which was his favorite shrub called tuva (saligao in Ilocano). This shrub bore fruits, which could be used for medicinal purposes, but poisonous when taken excessiv

ely. People from different parts of the region learned about such a plant and they came to search for him to buy tuva fruit. Some used them for medicine, while others discovered that once pounded and mixed with the water in the river, causes dizziness among the fishes, making fishing quite easy. Fishing in the river then became popular among the people with the use of tuva. This method prompted him to plant more of the shrub. Eventually, he became rich and celebrated a grand cañao (peshet in the ibaloi dialect). People were invited to attend the grand celebration where many animals were butchered and lasted for several days. The people wondered about his great wealth being spent in the cañao, which reached the old man. He faced the crowd and informed them that his wealth came from the sales of his favorite tuva (saligao), the fruit that they used for easy fishing. From then on the people started calling his place TUVA (now TUBA).
