At a time when the Palestinian people continue to endure immense suffering amid the ongoing crisis in Palestine, we find it deeply concerning that such diplomatic engagement is being given space without a corresponding and clear expression of concern for the continuing plight of the Palestinian people. For us, this is not simply a matter of protocol or international relations. It is a matter of principle, particularly when the values of human rights, dignity, and justice are at stake.
However, diplomacy should never involve compromising human rights. Just because we can communicate diplomatically does not mean that we are relieved of our obligation to address the plight of people whose rights are constantly violated. Diplomacy does not give us a reason to ignore human rights. We believe that engagement should go hand in hand with accountability.
The broader conflict in the Middle East has already caused major ripples in the global economy, particularly in energy and oil markets. Disruptions in oil production and shipping have contributed to higher fuel prices, causing inflation and putting greater strain on economies around the globe. Such consequences are not mere statistics. We feel the impact every time we refuel our vehicles, travel, pay for transportation, purchase food and other essential items, or try to make ends meet within the limits of our budgets. For Filipino households and students, the oil crisis is also part of everyday life, as an increase in fuel prices can also drive up the cost of transportation and other goods. What occurs in Palestine and in the greater Middle East will not simply stay in Palestine and the Middle East.
Yet leadership is also measured by the principles that remain clear even when taking a position becomes difficult or inconvenient. This is where our disappointment becomes particularly significant. We have seen the promise of a โ๐ง๐ค๐จ๐๐จ ๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ช๐ ๐๐จโ as a representation of hope, compassion, and a better future. But a better future cannot be meaningful if that hope becomes selective, particularly if it is extended to some while the suffering of others is met with silence or ambiguity.
The question, however, is not whether diplomacy is necessary. We do not advocate for antagonism toward the Israeli people, nor do we believe that dialogue between nations should not take place. What we advocate for is leadership that understands that diplomacy can coexist with support for those who have been victimized by injustice. If we speak of a future based on compassion and justice, then that future must also encompass the Palestinian people. Ang โ๐ง๐ค๐จ๐๐จ ๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ช๐ ๐๐จโ ay dapat para sa lahatโnot only when it is convenient, but especially when standing for it demands courage.
As a socio-political youth organization, we We are stakeholders in the kind of society and world that we will inherit, and we have a responsibility to question actions that appear inconsistent with the values of human dignity, justice, and compassion. Our generation has the right to expect leaders to be clear about where they stand when human rights are at stake, and we will continue to use our voice to call for accountability and principled leadership. We may recognize the role of diplomacy, but we remain firm that human rights must never be negotiable. We may understand the complexities of international relations, but understanding complexity should never mean accepting silence in the face of suffering.
๐๐๐ฒ๐ ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ง ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก โ ๐๐๐ ๐๐ก๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐ซ therefore calls for greater clarity, consistency, and courage from our public officials in standing for human rights and justice.
