BAYAN MUNA CENTRAL VISAYAS LEADER NABBED IN CEBU CITY

JUST IN: Authorities from the CIDG Cebu City Field Unit arrested John Ruiz, 54, the regional coordinator for progressive group Bayan Muna, on Monday afternoon in Barangay Guadalupe.

Ruiz, who was listed as the No. 1 Provincial Most Wanted Person, was served an outstanding warrant for Attempted Murder issued by RTC Branch 55 in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.

Bail has been recommended at P120,000.

The National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) Secretary Lope Santos III calls for expansion of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict’s (NTF-ELCAC) Barangay Development Program (BDP).

Sec. Santos said that poverty incidence in many local government units has already dropped below 20%, leaving fewer municipalities in the highest 29% bracket.

“This shows the BDP has been a vital vehicle for poverty reduction," he said. “The BDP should be expanded—not reduced. We must connect more barangays to main roads, telecommunications, and electricity to bring development to lowland, upland, and coastal communities alike."

About 15.85 million Filipinos in more than 5,600 barangays have benefited from the BDP's funding of nearly 10,000 projects totaling P46.85 billion, according to an earlier report by the NTF-ELCAC.
