Lake Sebu brought home multiple regional recognitions during the Pugay Pangkalusugan 2026 Regional Awards, held on October 1, 2026, at The Farm Carpenter Hill, Koronadal City, placing the municipality among this year’s recognized local government units and health program implementers in SOCCSKSARGEN.

Lake Sebu received the Regional Sandugo Award – Top Performing LGU for its sustained support for voluntary blood donation and its contribution to the National Voluntary Blood Services Program. The recognition reflects the municipality’s continuing efforts to mobilize blood donors and help strengthen the availability of safe blood for patients in need.

The Rural Health Unit (RHU) of Lake Sebu also earned the DRRM-H Sustainability Award for sustaining disaster risk reduction and management initiatives within the local health system, supporting preparedness and health emergency response at the community level.

Adding to Lake Sebu’s regional distinctions, Enya Logong, RM was named a nominee for Most Outstanding Sanitary Inspector, bringing local sanitation and environmental health work into the regional spotlight.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (MESU) of Lake Sebu was recognized as a Functional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, reflecting its continuing work in disease surveillance, monitoring, reporting, and timely public health response.

Together, the recognitions highlight key areas of Lake Sebu’s public health efforts—from blood donation and emergency preparedness to environmental sanitation and disease surveillance—underscoring the collective work behind its local health programs.

The regional honors mark another milestone for Lake Sebu’s health sector, with its programs, systems, and personnel gaining recognition at the regional level while continuing to strengthen public health efforts for communities across the municipality.

As preparations for school-based vaccination get underway across Lake Sebu, parents and guardians came together in participating schools across different barangays to learn what to expect from the municipality’s School-Based Immunization (SBI) Program, implemented in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH) and Department of Education (DepEd).

The discussions cover the purpose of SBI, the vaccines to be administered, and the importance of protecting children and adolescents against vaccine-preventable diseases. Bringing these conversations directly to participating schools allows families to receive essential information before vaccination begins.

Measles-Rubella (MR) and Tetanus-Diphtheria (Td) vaccines will be given to Grade 1 pupils and Grade 7 students, while eligible Grade 4 and Grade 5 female pupils will receive the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

These school-based discussions mark an important preparatory step for SBI implementation across public schools in Lake Sebu. Parents and guardians are encouraged to review the information provided, coordinate with their children’s schools and health workers, and provide the necessary consent. Vaccination dates will be announced by the respective schools and health workers once schedules are finalized, and parents are encouraged to ensure that eligible learners are available on their assigned dates.

Through the coordinated efforts of the health and education sectors, the program helps ensure that families and schools are informed and prepared for the vaccination of eligible learners across the municipality.

Barangay Health Stations across Lake Sebu are being equipped with essential supplies for immunization, routine healthcare, and maternal services, strengthening frontline readiness and helping bring needed health support closer to residents, particularly those in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA).

Each BHS and Super Health Center received an AEFI Kit under the School-Based Immunization (SBI) Program, giving health workers essential supplies for the immediate response and management of possible adverse events following vaccination. They also received their allocated medical supplies to support routine healthcare services and day-to-day operations.

For maternal health, all BHS received Calcium 500 mg for supplementation among pregnant women. Expectant mothers are encouraged to visit their nearest BHS regularly for prenatal check-ups, where health workers can monitor their pregnancy and provide appropriate supplements, medicines, and health guidance.

The provision of these supplies supports the continuous delivery of essential health services at the barangay level, allowing health workers to respond to community health needs while keeping basic healthcare support within closer reach of residents across the municipality.

Growing up comes with questions, and students had the opportunity to ask, learn, and understand as the Healthy Young Ones sessions on September 25, 2026 opened discussions on adolescence, reproductive health, STI and HIV prevention, and mental health at Odos Angkoy Integrated School in Barangay Tasiman and Lake Sebu National High School in Poblacion.

At Odos Angkoy Integrated School, the morning program was facilitated by Eva Abrao, RM, with Hanna Lou Ysip, RN, guiding students through the changes that come with adolescence, including puberty, gender and health, the menstrual cycle, and reproduction and responsibility. Claire Fedong, RM, explained the reproductive system and its functions, while Darlene Labto, RM, introduced important ways to prevent sexually transmitted infections and HIV, complemented by a condom demonstration. Raphael Manrique, RSW, tackled mental health, emphasizing the importance of understanding emotions, seeking support, and caring for one’s well-being.

At Lake Sebu National High School, the afternoon discussions covered similar concerns relevant to young people, with Sherlyn Fungan, RM, taking up adolescence, puberty, and gender and health; Kevin Aperrocho, RN, explaining the reproductive system, menstrual cycle, and reproduction and responsibility; and Antonette Artacho, RN, discussing STI and HIV prevention with a condom demonstration. Manrique also facilitated the mental health discussion, giving students an opportunity to consider the emotional and social challenges that may come with growing up.

The topics were presented in a way that encouraged students to better understand the changes happening in their bodies and emotions, recognize the importance of responsible decisions, and know where to seek accurate information and support when they have questions or concerns.

By bringing these conversations directly into schools, Healthy Young Ones helps create a more open and informed environment where young people can learn about their health, respect themselves and others, and develop habits that support their well-being as they grow.

Every animal bite calls for timely assessment and proper care, prompting the Municipal Health Office (MHO) to conduct a full-day re-orientation on Animal Bite Treatment Center (ABTC) guidelines and protocols on September 25, 2026, at Highlanders Resort, Poblacion, Lake Sebu, to reinforce the local response to rabies prevention and treatment.

The session brought together ABTC personnel to review standard procedures for assessing animal bite cases, managing injuries, providing Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), and ensuring appropriate follow-up care.

Municipal Health Officer Dr. Arenz Jade C. Docdocil and Karen Rose G. Manansala, RN, MPA led discussions on proper animal bite assessment, injury categorization, wound care, vaccine administration, and PEP management. The discussions also covered determining appropriate treatment based on the type and severity of exposure, emphasizing the importance of timely consultation and completing the recommended vaccination schedule.

Assistant ABTC Coordinator Marivic S. Costales, RN facilitated sessions on ABTC documentation, monitoring, and reporting, including the proper recording of patient information, treatment provided, follow-up schedules, and case outcomes. The session emphasized accurate and timely reporting to support patient tracking and local rabies surveillance.

The re-orientation also gave health personnel an opportunity to review existing ABTC procedures, clarify operational concerns, and align practices with current treatment and reporting protocols. The activity strengthened the team’s preparedness to provide timely, appropriate, and consistent care for animal bite patients while supporting the municipality’s continuing rabies prevention and control efforts.

Health care came closer to home for 225 residents of Barangay Lamdalag, Lake Sebu, who availed of a range of essential services during the PhilHealth YAKAP Caravan on September 25, 2026.

From checking vital signs to medical consultations and laboratory services, residents had several health needs addressed in one community-based activity. PhilHealth membership checking, updating, and enrollment were also available, along with free prescribed medicines for clients who needed them.

More than bringing services to the barangay, the caravan gave residents a convenient opportunity to check on their health, access needed care, and make sure their PhilHealth information was up to date—all in one visit.

Local health workers completed a three-day Progestin-only Subdermal Implant (PSI) Training held from September 22–24, 2026, at Sa Balai Lake Resort, Lake Sebu, strengthening the local government’s efforts to bring accessible, long-acting family planning options closer to rural communities.

The capacity-building program equipped participating midwives and nurses with practical skills to provide safe, long-acting reversible contraceptive services at the primary care level. The training progressed from classroom instruction to hands-on simulation and supervised clinical practice under the guidance of provincial health experts.

Genesis Q. Navales, RN, Provincial Family Planning Coordinator, led sessions on client counseling, pre-procedure assessment, infection prevention, and proper implant procedures. Participants practiced implant insertion, removal, and replacement using RITA Arm training models before advancing to supervised procedures with actual clients. Dr. Jhoannamae Arianne M. Paypa facilitated sessions on recognizing potential complications, managing possible side effects, and ensuring appropriate follow-up care.

The training concluded with feedback and action planning to support the integration of PSI services into local health facilities. Progestin-only subdermal implants are a long-acting and reversible family planning method that provides extended pregnancy prevention and can be removed when a client decides to become pregnant.

With additional health workers trained in PSI services, Lake Sebu is further equipped to provide residents with informed, safe, and confidential family planning options closer to their communities, reducing the need to travel to facilities outside the municipality for these services.

Questions about growing up, relationships, reproductive health, and mental well-being found room for honest discussion at T’boli Sbu Senior High School in Barangay Lamdalag on September 23, 2026, as 100 students took part in the “Heart to Heart: Healthy Young Ones” Youth Health Forum.

The half-day forum brought health topics closer to students through a series of discussions designed around the realities and questions young people face. Ghea Vergara, RN, opened the sessions with “Puberty, Gender and Health,” followed by Cherry Umek, RM, who discussed “Reproductive System, Reproduction and Responsibility.”

The conversation moved to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), with Allyn Alimpolos, RM, discussing prevention, risk reduction, and the importance of seeking accurate information and appropriate health services. A separate session on HIV further expanded the discussion on prevention and health awareness.

Mental health was also part of the conversation, with Melodie Cayugan, RM, discussing adolescent mental well-being and positive coping mechanisms that students can use when facing challenges and emotional concerns.

The students were actively involved throughout the forum. They participated in an interactive demonstration on STI and pregnancy prevention, raised questions during the open forum, and completed pre- and post-activity assessments to measure their learning.

More than a series of lectures, the “Heart to Heart: Healthy Young Ones” forum created an open space for students to ask questions, talk about concerns, and gain practical health information that can help guide responsible choices during adolescence.

Maternal and child health education was brought closer to families in Barangay Bacdulong on September 18, 2026, as pregnant women and mothers took part in a Mother’s Class covering safe motherhood, immunization, family planning, nutrition, breastfeeding, and infant feeding.

Toni Rose Somindo, RN, discussed Safe Motherhood, Immunization, and Family Planning, providing participants with practical information on pregnancy care, disease prevention, and family planning options.

Lailane Entol, RND, meanwhile, focused on Proper Nutrition during the First 1,000 Days of Life, as well as Breastfeeding and Infant Feeding, highlighting the importance of adequate nutrition from pregnancy through a child’s early years.

Participants also took part in a question-and-answer session, where they were able to raise concerns and clarify information related to pregnancy, maternal care, nutrition, and child health. Blood testing for pregnant women was also conducted by Reynellen Eborde, RMT.

The Mother’s Class was facilitated by Honey Lyn Ursales, RN, and Evangeline Galera, RM, providing Bacdulong families with accessible health information and services aimed at supporting healthier pregnancies and better health outcomes for mothers and children.

Fifteen selected health service providers from the Lake Sebu Rural Health Unit took part in the MMS Training Package Pretesting for Health Service Providers held on September 16–17, 2026, at Dolores Lake Resort, helping test and refine training materials and approaches on Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) for pregnant women.

Organized by Reach & Gains and Vitamin Angels, the two-day activity covered key components of MMS, including prenatal multivitamin use, proper supplementation, distribution and storage, documentation, counseling, and strategies for communicating maternal nutrition messages.

The pretesting also brought pregnant women into separate focus group discussions, with seven selected pregnant women sharing their feedback on the materials and messages.

Led by Dr. Luz R. Escubil, MPH, Head of Vitamin Angels, the sessions included guided exercises, counseling simulations, evaluation activities, and a review of the training and communication materials to identify areas for improvement before wider implementation.

The activity allowed local health workers to share their firsthand experience and insights in refining tools designed to make maternal nutrition information more practical, understandable, and responsive to the needs of pregnant women.
