The Province of Northern Samar has taken a major step forward in strengthening geoheritage, geodiversity, and geoconservation efforts with the completion of its 2024โ2026 Geosite Inventory, identifying 49 potential geosites across the province โ including two recognized for their international significance.
Leading the list are the ๐๐๐๐-๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ in Brgy. Balicuatro, Lavezares, and the iconic ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ in Brgy. Progress, Biri island, long celebrated for their seven majestic islets. Their inclusion as internationally significant geosites underscores the global geoscientific value embedded in Northern Samarโs landscapes.
The extensive inventory was conducted from September 2024 to April 2026 through a multi-agency collaboration with: University of the Philippines Diliman โ National Institute of Geological Sciences (UP NIGS); Mines & Geosciences Bureau โ Central Office and Region VIII (MGB CO & RO8); National Museum of the Philippines (NMP); Department of Science and Technology (DOST); Centre for Neighborhood Studies (CeNS), and UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines (UNACOM).

The Geosite Inventory 2024โ2026 forms part of Northern Samarโs long-term program to protect and elevate its natural heritage under the visionary leadership of Governor Harris Christopher M. Ongchuan. The initiative strengthens the provinceโs bid as an Aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark, ensuring the conservation of its geological wonders while celebrating the landscapes that define Northern Samarโs character and identity.
By documenting and promoting these geosites, the province positions itself as a rising destination for geodiversity, geoheritage, and geoconservation โ bringing Northern Samarโs stories and sites to the world.
