Through citizen science, and thanks to Jeru Cajapin for documenting it, a quiet but powerful transformation has been unfolding at Apo Reef Natural Park’s shipwreck site.
Back in 2018, a well-known cross-shaped pole in front of the wreck showed minimal coral growth. This was a favorite perch for freedivers chasing that perfect Instagramable shot. Truly iconic but at a cost. Constant contact left the structure struggling to support marine life.
Recognizing this, the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) stepped in. With the adoption of Green Fins guidelines in 2021, sitting or holding onto reef structures was strictly prohibited. Enforcement followed, with penalties issued, a necessary move for long-term protection.
Fast forward to today.
What was once bare is now thriving, blanketed in soft corals. A remarkable transformation captured not just with better reef conditions, but with better camera I must say, Jeru (LOL).
Supported by the reef’s natural recovery during the pandemic and stronger compliance from visitors, the ecosystem didn’t just recover—it flourished.
More than a before-and-after, this is proof: protect nature, and it heals. Follow the rules, and you become part of that story.
