The Commission on Higher Education (CHED), in partnership with the British Council Philippines, conducts the two-day collaborative workshop with key stakeholders through the “From Strategy to Action: Multi-Year Implementation Planning Workshop for the Transnational Higher Education (TNHE) National Strategy,” on 03-04 September 2026 at Twin Lakes, Tagaytay City. The workshop marks an important step toward translating the country’s TNHE strategic directions into concrete programmes, projects, and initiatives, while fostering greater stakeholder alignment and shared ownership in the Strategy’s implementation.

From strategy to action, CHED continues to work closely with its partners and stakeholders toward advancing a globally engaged, responsive, and future-ready Philippine higher education system. Through collaboration and strategic planning, the Commission remains committed to strengthening the internationalization, competitiveness, and global standing of Philippine higher education.

MANILA, Philippines — In celebration of ASEAN Month 2026, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Central Office conducted the “How ASEAN Are You” Quiz Bee on 24 August 2026 at the CHED Auditorium, bringing together participating offices in a friendly competition centered on ASEAN knowledge and awareness.

The quiz bee featured questions on ASEAN history, culture, institutions, regional cooperation, and key developments, providing an engaging avenue for CHED personnel to deepen their understanding of ASEAN and its significance to the Philippines.

After a spirited competition, UniFAST emerged as the champion, followed by the Office of the Chairperson (OC) in second place and CHED MIMAROPA in third place. The activity underscored CHED’s commitment to promoting ASEAN awareness and strengthening understanding of the Philippines’ role in regional cooperation and integration.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) joins the ASEAN community in celebrating our shared commitment to cooperation, solidarity, and a stronger Southeast Asian future under the theme “Setting Sail, Navigating Our Future Together.”

The celebration brought together government officials, ASEAN representatives, diplomatic partners, higher education stakeholders, and members of the academic community in a meaningful gathering that highlights the enduring spirit of ASEAN unity, partnership, and shared aspirations.

The program featured messages from H.E. San Lwin, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN; Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis, Chairperson of CHED; Mr. Dominic Xavier M. Imperial, Deputy Assistant Secretary and ASEAN 2026 Spokesperson of the Department of Foreign Affairs; and H.E. Marciano Octavio Garcia Da Silva, Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to the Philippines.

The celebration also recognized the valuable contributions and continued support of ASEAN’s partners, with messages from the ASEAN University Network (AUN) Secretariat, SEAMEO RIHED, Education Malaysia Global Services, the Embassy of Malaysia in the Philippines, and the Embassy of Timor-Leste in the Philippines.

Adding vibrancy to the occasion was a special intermission performance by the Emilio Aguinaldo College Yaman Lahi Dance Artists, showcasing the richness and diversity of Southeast Asian culture through music and movement.

The event also featured the ASEAN Best-Dressed Showcase, celebrating the rich cultural diversity, creativity, and spirit of unity that define the ASEAN community. The showcase recognized participants who creatively represented the cultures of ASEAN Member States through their attire. Maynard T. Cornista of the Office of the Executive Director (OED) was named the Male Category Winner, representing Cambodia, while Atty. Janina Caitlin Cabalfin of the Legal and Legislative Services (LLS) was recognized as the Female Category Winner, representing Vietnam. Their participation beautifully reflected the theme of “Setting Sail, Navigating Our Future Together,” highlighting how cultural appreciation and people-to-people connections help strengthen ASEAN solidarity.

As ASEAN continues to navigate an evolving regional and global landscape, the celebration serves as a reminder that our shared journey is strengthened by cooperation, mutual understanding, and collective action. Through stronger partnerships in education, people-to-people exchanges, and regional cooperation, ASEAN continues to chart a course toward a more inclusive, resilient, and connected future.

Every freedom we exercise today was paid for by the quiet courage and extraordinary sacrifices of those who refused to bow to oppression. As the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) marks National Heroes Day (Araw ng mga Bayani), we salute the enduring Filipino spirit of patriotism and nationalism of our heroes that continues to live on in the hearts of our scholars, educators, and community leaders strongly safeguarding our country.

This national observance traces its roots to the late August 1896 "Cry of Pugad Lawin," when Andres Bonifacio and the Katipuneros tore up their cedulas (tax certificates) to signify the start of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule. The holiday was officially established decades later in 1931 through Act No. 3827 by the Philippine Legislature, originally designating the last Sunday of August for its nationwide commemoration.

In 2007, R. A. No. 9492 was promulgated assigning the last Monday of August as the National Heroes Day. Unlike single-person commemorations such as Rizal Day or Bonifacio Day, National Heroes Day uniquely honors the collective courage of all who served the motherland, creating an opportunity to recognize both historical figures and modern-day heroes.

Today, this legacy of heroism finds new expression in the faces of those who answer the call of duty during times of severe calamity. As relentless monsoon rains and tropical storms challenge our communities across the country, we see the true Bayanihan spirit embodied by our modern-day heroes. We honor the brave first responders, military personnel, and local government units navigating dangerous floodwaters to rescue stranded families. We salute the dedicated relief workers, health personnel, and community volunteers who work around the clock to ensure hot meals, medical care, and shelter reach displaced citizens. Equally inspiring are the everyday Filipinos—the neighbors sharing supplies, the student volunteers packing relief goods, and the citizens offering shelter—proving that heroism is not only seen in the battlefields but also in times of crisis and calamities.

As an academic community, CHED encourages higher education institutions across the country to inspire students to embody the values of patriotism, integrity, and critical thought. By fostering excellence and civic duty within our classrooms and supporting disaster relief efforts in our communities, we keep the spirit of heroism alive in the next generation of leaders, educators, and innovators.

Today, we honor an exceptional public servant and academic champion whose visionary leadership continues to shape the landscape of higher education. Happy Birthday to our esteemed Regional Director, Dr. Maximo C. Aljibe, CESO III.

Throughout his distinguished career with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Dr. Aljibe has spearheaded pivotal initiatives that elevate tertiary education across multiple regions. Before leading CHED Regional Office VIII, he served with distinction in Regions VII and XII. He played a crucial role during the pandemic by formulating essential guidelines for the safe resumption of limited face-to-face classes for medical and allied health programs in key academic hubs like Cebu and Dumaguete.

Now at the helm of CHEDRO VIII, Dr. Aljibe continues to champion strategic alliances among Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Eastern Visayas. He remains dedicated to raising regional academic standards, improving licensure examination performance, ensuring institutional compliance, and future-proofing universities and colleges through collaborative leadership.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) is pleased to inform interested parties of the call for applications to the 2027–2028 Fulbright Advanced Research and University Lecturing Program, administered by the Philippine-American Educational Foundation (Fulbright Philippines).

The program provides Filipino academics and professionals with opportunities to undertake advanced research or university lecturing at higher education institutions, non-profit research institutes, and government institutions in the United States. Grantees may also teach courses and receive support for exchange visa processing, round-trip international airfare, monthly maintenance, professional development, books and supplies, and health and accident insurance.
