Future Tech Experts Dive into Quantum Computing at UP Tacloban Hackathon

Tacloban City, Leyte – DOST Advanced Science and Technology Institute's (DOST-ASTI) and QCS Project, in partnership with the Quantum Computing Society of the Philippines (One Quantum Philippines) and the University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban College (UPTC), recently hosted a three-day Quantum Computing Hackathon on 18 October 2024. The event brought together young Filipino innovators from Eastern Visayas to explore quantum computing, an emerging technology poised to revolutionize multiple industries.

The highlight of the event was the Quantum Computing Hackathon, where seven teams from UP Tacloban College, Visayas State University, AMA Computer College, and Philippine Science High School – Eastern Visayas Campus tackled foundational concepts in quantum computing using Qiskit Blocks, an educational tool that allows users to visualize and interact with quantum circuits in a gamified, block-based environment. The top prize went to UP Tacloban Team 2, composed of Dwayne Cabrigas, Shann Ripalda, and Gian Renomeron, for their outstanding problem-solving skills.

DOST-ASTI Director Dr. Franz de Leon emphasized the transformative potential of quantum computing and underscored the importance of building a skilled workforce capable of contributing to the emerging quantum-enabled economy. DOST-ASTI remains committed to supporting initiatives that foster technological growth and collaboration, ensuring that the Philippines is at the forefront of rapidly evolving fields like quantum computing.
