| QUICK FACTS: THE PHILIPPINE FLAG

β€’ It is widely noted that the flag was formally unfurled in Kawit, Cavite on June 12, 1898, but there are historians who say that it was first raised in Alapan, Imus, Cavite on May 28, 1898.

β€’ The eight rays of the sun of the flag are representative of the first eight provinces that fought against the Spaniards – Manila, Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Batangas, Laguna and Nueva Ecija.

β€’ The three stars are representative of the Philippines’ main island groups Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, but it was originally conceptualized to embody Luzon, Panay and Mindanao.

β€’ Three women were responsible for sewing the flag in Hong Kong – Marcela Agoncillo, her daughter Lorenza, and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad, who was a niece of Dr. Jose Rizal.

β€’ The original flag bears ornamentation that’s a bit more elaborate than the current flag’s design: it is embroidered with β€œLibertad, Justicia and Igualdad” (Liberty, Justice, and Equality) on one side, and β€œFuerzas Expedicionarias del Norte de Luzon” (Expeditionary forces of Northern Luzon) on the other.

β€’ The original flag that was unfurled on June 12, 1898 is preserved at the Aguinaldo Museum in Baguio.
