Bago pa man dumating ang mga dayuhang mananakop Kastila, ang isang kumunidad ay may sarili ng pangkat ng taga-bantay na binubuo ng pinuno o ama ng bawat angkan/pamilya na boluntaryong nagsisilbi bilang bantay ng ari-arian, kabuhayan at taniman sa kanilang pook laban sa mga mababangis na hayop at mga magnanakaw.
