On the afternoon of May 20, 1900, Major Bonifacio Serrano arrived in Palanog, Masbate's capital, and surrendered his men, who formed a parade in the public plaza. Major Serrano immediately handed Colonel Hardin his sword and ordered his troops to lay down their weapons, and the Americans treated them with the utmost respect.

Those who surrendered with Major Serrano were one hundred ninety-six privates, ten officers, and four civil officers, not including the town presidents of Masbate and Governor Vicente Trivinio. They surrender forty-one Re*****on, thirty-eight Ma**er, and fifteen Amberg rifles, all in good condition and a considerable quantity of ammunition. All those who surrendered were pardoned and given two days of rice, as they remained in the town as prisoners of war and had no means of subsistence.

Governor Vicete Trivinio was temporarily permitted to continue to oversee the island's government activities, as did Masbate's town presidents in their respective towns.

Not many people talk about this date in Masbate’s history.

After the Pulahanes, led by Pedro Kipte, pushed back Spanish forces in August 1898, Masbate had a brief moment of freedom under the First Philippine Republic. For a while, it felt like independence was finally ours.

But it didn’t last.

On this day in 1900, American forces arrived and took control of Masbate. Just like that, another chapter of foreign rule began.

Same land. Same people. Another struggle.

History like this is easy to forget—but it shaped who we are today.

What do you think—should this be remembered more?
