The Philippine Eye Research Institute (PERI), in celebration of its 59th founding anniversary on June 19, commemorated Dr. Geminiano T. de Ocampo, PERIโ€™s founding director and the national scientist who was instrumental in establishing PERI as the countryโ€™s premier eye research institute.
PERI paid a courtesy visit to Marcelo H. Del Pilar National High School in Malolos, Bulacan, where Dr. de Ocampo spent his secondary education. PERI, led by its director Dr. Victor Arni DP Sicam, held a lecture covering Dr. de Ocampoโ€™s life, and PERIโ€™s background and societal contributions. He and PERI researchers also moderated an open forum with the students regarding future career opportunities in the field of ophthalmology.
PERIโ€™s anniversary on June 19 coincides with the 163rd birthday of Dr. Jose Rizal, the nationโ€™s national hero and one of the first Filipino ophthalmologists.
