The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), together with Japanese and Filipino technical teams, the project consultant, contractor, and other stakeholders, marked a significant milestone in Philippine infrastructure development with the groundbreaking ceremony for the Soil Mixing Wall (SMW) works of Cut-and-Cover Tunnel 1 (CCT-1) under the Davao City Bypass Construction Project (DCBCP) โ Contract Package I-3, formally commencing the use of specialized Japanese construction technology for a tunnel project of this scale in the Philippines.
Developed and widely used in Japan, the Soil Mixing Wall method involves mechanically mixing existing soil with cement-based materials to form a continuous and stable underground wall. For CCT-1, the technology will help provide a safer and more controlled excavation environment while enhancing the stability of the surrounding ground during tunnel construction.
With an approximate length of 6.2 kilometers, DCBCP Contract Package I-3 includes Cut-and-Cover Tunnel 1 and Cut-and-Cover Tunnel 2, among its major and technically challenging structures.
