Historian's Life.
If Stahrov Monastery in Prague was a person, the church would be its heart, and its Baroque cloister library as its head. Voted as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world, tours and access is limited to preserve the books and its surroundings.
Thanks to the Czech Embassy in Manila, and ambassador Jaroslav Olsa who arranged my visit, I was allowed to walk inside and even consult its rare Filipiniana: the lower half of a German edition (1760) of the Murillo Velarde map, and a book published in Manila in 1763 whose kilometric title included the words "tentaciones diabolical" [diabolic temptations]. The book turned out to be a guide for dying people writing out their last will and testament!
When I looked up at the painted ceilings, one detail [Lower Left] caught my attention, It depicted the five foolish maidens/virgins found in the Gospel of St. Matthew who were locked out of the wedding party because they ran out of oil for their lamps. Imagine being a monk weary of reading and study, you look up the ceiling and see the warning "qui ignorant ignorabitur" [he who is ignorant, will be ignored]. It is something I should write on the board on the first day of classes this semester.

Patrick Flores, a curator, scholar, and artistic director, is highly regarded in Philippine art circles.

Flores is Chief Curator of the National Gallery Singapore and Director of the Philippine Contemporary Art Network. He was a Visiting Fellow at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 1999 and a Guest Scholar at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles in 2014.

His publications include Painting History: Revisions in Philippine Colonial Art (1999); Past Peripheral: Curation in Southeast Asia (2008); Art After War: 1948-1969 (2015); and Raymundo Albano: Texts (2017).

He co-edited The Modern in Southeast Asian Art: A Reader with T. K. Sabapathy (2022). He served as Artistic Director of the Singapore Biennale in 2019 and as Curator of the Philippines (2015) and Taiwan (2022) pavilions at the Venice Biennale.
