Good Friday: A Faithful Journey at the Bulabog-Putian National Park 🕯️

The Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) at Bulabog-Putian National Park is a profound intersection of faith, culture, and environmental stewardship. As pilgrims and visitors ascend the rugged limestone trails, the annual event serves as a reminder that spiritual devotion and ecological preservation can coexist in harmony. This tradition is an act of communal reverence that honors both the sacredness of the season and the natural heritage of the park.

Respecting these long-standing traditions is important, yet it must be balanced with the maintaining the integrity of the protected area. The limestone formations and diverse flora and fauna of Bulabog-Putian are sensitive to high foot traffic. It is essential for participants to practice the "Leave No Trace" principle, ensuring that the spiritual journey does not leave a physical scar on the landscape. By staying on designated paths and managing waste responsibly, the community ensures that the park remains a sanctuary for future generations to experience both its natural beauty and its cultural significance.

Safety and order are the cornerstones of a successful Via Crucis, achieved through the collective effort of the community and local authorities. Volunteers and residents work side-by-side to monitor trail conditions, provide assistance to elderly pilgrims, and manage the flow of the crowd. This unified approach creates a secure environment where the focus remains on reflection and prayer, proving that the strength of the community is the best safeguard for both the people and the environment they cherish.

This meaningful event is made possible through the dedicated collaboration of various stakeholders. Heartfelt acknowledgement is extended to the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB), the Local Government Units (LGU) of Di**le and San Enrique, and Brgy. Moroboro for their leadership and logistical coordination. We also recognize the vital presence and support of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), whose commitment to public safety ensures a peaceful and orderly observance for all. ✨🕯️🌳⛰️

The Green Apothecary: Bridging Science and Tradition in Bulabog-Putian National Park

Under the dappled sunlight of Bulabog-Putian National Park, the air smells of damp earth and crushed leaves - a scent that, for 73-year-old Jose Dael, is the smell of a life’s work. On March 3, 2026, in celebration of World Wildlife Day, this seasoned folk healer of Barangay Moroboro, Di**le stood alongside conservationists, proving that the forest is not just a collection of trees, but a living, breathing pharmacy.

The species identification activity, spearheaded by DENR PENRO Iloilo and CENRO Barotac Nuevo, was more than a technical survey but an exercise in Ethnopharmacology - the study of how local cultures use the healing power of plants.

Forester Robert S. Solidarios, Chief of the Conservation and Development Section, reminded the participants that we cannot protect what we do not know. "Understanding these species is the first step to ensuring their survival," he noted.

Reynaldo K. Lamanero, Park Maintenance Foreman, described the park as a "natural pharmacy." Long before modern medicine was the default choice for remedies, these roots and leaves were the primary healers for the people of Di**le.

Mr. Dael represents a fading bridge to the past. For over 20 years, he has practiced the art of pangalap, the traditional gathering of medicinal plants to create cure for any ailments.

"In the old days, the forest provided everything," Dael shared.

Today, due to his age and the vital, strict regulations protecting the park’s biodiversity, he and many other healers have transitioned from "gatherers" to "gardeners," cultivating these wild species in their own farm lots to preserve both the plants and their practice.
During the trek, the team identified several key species. Modern science is now beginning to validate what folk healers like Mr. Dael have known for generations.

Among the most prominent species identified was Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa), a staple in local healing for urinary tract infections; modern science, as noted in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, confirms its potency, identifying corosolic acid as a key compound for its anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory effects. Similarly, the aptly named insulin plant (Chamaecostus cuspidatus) was documented for its role in managing diabetes, a use supported by the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, which highlights the leaf extract’s ability to lower blood glucose.

The team also identified the Philippine Fig (Ficus pseudopalma), an endemic species rich in antioxidants. According to the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine, is traditionally used to treat kidney stones and diabetes. For digestive and systemic ailments, the Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) remains a cornerstone of folk medicine. While its leaves and roots are boiled into a decoction for abdominal pain, the Molecules Journal suggests its limonoids offer significant anti-microbial and anti-malarial benefits.

The survey further highlighted specialized remedies like the Anahaw (Saribus rotundifolius), whose fleshy parts are boiled for stomach distress, and the Salibadbad, a member of the Capparidaceae family. The latter is frequently used as a hampol (poultice) for headaches, a practice aligned with the known analgesic properties of its botanical family. Even the more intimidating species have their place, such as the Bulan-bulan (Dendrocnide meyeniana), or "Lipang Kalabaw." Though its stinging hairs are a cause for concern, research into its histamine content explores its potential in treating chronic muscle inflammation.

The list of forest finds continued with the Biri-bitoon, a go-to remedy for bughat (illness relapse) and hangin-hangin. Completing the identified species was the Fishtail Palm (Caryota mitis), valued not only for its medicinal starch but also as a symbol of the park’s lush, prehistoric beauty.

The documentation of these species is only the beginning. As we face a global health landscape increasingly challenged by synthetic drug resistance, the natural pharmacy of our protected areas offers a reservoir of untapped potential. However, the survival of these Philippine endemic species and the ancestral knowledge attached to them, hangs in a delicate balance.

By bridging the gap between traditional hampol and modern pharmacology, we do more than just validate folk medicine; we unlock new possibilities for sustainable healthcare. Protecting our forests is, therefore, not just an environmental mandate, but a commitment to preserving a living library of medical solutions that have sustained us for centuries.

As Forester Solidarios aptly noted, knowing these species exists is the first step. The second is ensuring they remain rooted in the earth, available for both the healer’s touch and the scientist’s lens.

Educators Champion Environmental Stewardship at Bulabog-Putian National Park

On February 14, 2026, the Department of Education (DepEd) – Schools Division of Iloilo City commemorated Valentine’s Day through a "labor of love" for the environment, executing a large-scale tree-planting initiative at Bulabog-Putian National Park (BPNP).

The event, which convened school heads and teachers from throughout the division, serves as a core component of “Eco Champions.” This regional advocacy program is dedicated to environmental stewardship with the ambitious long-term goal of planting one million trees.

To ensure the long-term success of the initiative, the participants were given a technical orientation on proper planting techniques to ensure the activity was carried out effectively and responsibly. By the conclusion of the event, the educators had successfully planted 500 Narra and Batwan seedlings within a designated area of the park. This partnership emphasizes the essential role of the academic community as primary advocates for environmental sustainability and a greener future.

The Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP) Iloilo Council recently extended their learning beyond the traditional classroom, utilizing the unique landscape of Bulabog-Putian National Park (BPNP) for their hands-on education. From February 11 to 14, 2026, scouts participating in the 68th Council Camp engaged in a specialized “Cave Exploration” program designed to immerse them in the protected area’s rich biodiversity.

By visiting the Tuko and Maestranza Caves, the scouts moved beyond theoretical lessons to gain firsthand knowledge of ecology and conservation. This activity championed a profound appreciation for the park’s natural resources while emphasizing the vital role these protected areas play in the local ecosystem and the responsibility of the youth participants as future leaders.

To ensure both the safety of the scouts and the integrity of the environment, personnel from the DENR CENRO Barotac Nuevo Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Unit, alongside BPNP staff and local guides, served as facilitators. They provided technical oversight and environmental interpretation, ensuring each journey was conducted safely and efficiently without compromising the standards of conservation ethics.

The four-day event highlighted a powerful partnership between the GSP and the DENR, effectively mentoring the next generation of environmental stewards through experiential learning. 💚

💚🌳✨ A Great Big Hug from the Bulabog-Putian National Park!

Members of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines recently took a stand for forest conservation by participating in the DENR-FMB Tree Hugging Campaign at Bulabog-Putian National Park. By gathering around a century-old Dao tree, the scouts highlighted the vital role that old-growth timber plays in our environmental health. This act of stewardship serves to strengthen the bond between the youth and the natural world, encouraging a new generation to protect our national parks and the biodiversity they harbor.

The Dao tree (Dracontomelon dao) is a fitting subject for such a campaign, as it is as functional as it is beautiful. Scientific literature and ethnobotanical studies have long documented its value; for instance, Dela Peña et al. (2019) identified that its bark and sapwood possess significant antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, while Ragasa et al. (2016) detailed the presence of bioactive secondary metabolites like cardol and anacardic acid.

Traditionally used to treat ailments ranging from dental infections to inflammation (Brown, 1921) the Dao tree stands as nature's pharmacy. Protecting these trees ensures that we preserve not only a symbol of Filipino resilience but also a biological legacy that has served local cultures for hundreds of years.
