Today, during the Regular Session of the Sangguniang Barangay of Nagsayaoan held at the Barangay Hall, the Certificate of Meritorious Service Award was formally re-enacted and presented to HON. KAMIS ARESTE ESPIRITU ALFAHAL, Sangguniang Barangay Member of Nagsayaoan, Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur.

The award, conferred by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas, was officially handed over by Punong Barangay Jason C. Dominguez in recognition of Hon. Nagsayaoan Community Unites in Successful Region I Earthquake Drill

NAGSAYAOAN, Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur — Demonstrating exceptional preparedness and community spirit, the residents/evacuees, barangay officials, and school community of Barangay Nagsayaoan actively participated in the conduct of the Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on June 18, reinforcing the importance of collective action in times of disaster.

As the designated Ground Zero for the Region I simulation hosted by the Municipality of Sta. Maria, Barangay Nagsayaoan became the focal point of a large-scale emergency exercise that tested evacuation procedures, rescue operations, and disaster response coordination.

From the orderly evacuation of residents to the active involvement of local officials and school personnel, the drill showcased the community’s readiness to respond to emergencies.

Students, teachers, volunteers, and emergency responders worked hand in hand with barangay leaders to ensure that the simulation was carried out efficiently and safely.

The strong participation of the people of Nagsayaoan reflected a shared commitment to disaster preparedness and resilience. Their cooperation not only contributed to the success of the exercise but also underscored the vital role of community engagement in safeguarding lives during natural hazards.

The June 18 drill stands as a testament to what can be achieved when government agencies, local leaders, educational institutions, and citizens work together toward a common goal: building a safer, more prepared, and disaster-resilient community.

Demonstrating the country’s continuing push toward proactive disaster preparedness, the municipality of Santa Maria in Ilocos Sur led the Ilocos Region’s second-quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on June 18, strengthening community resilience and emergency response capabilities against major earthquake and tsunami threats.

The simulation tested the response of residents, local authorities, and emergency responders under a scenario involving a magnitude 8.0 earthquake followed by an eight-meter tsunami threat, highlighting the importance of coordinated action in safeguarding lives and communities.

A total of 200 residents from Barangay Nagsayaoan and 78 municipal government employees safely evacuated to the designated evacuation site at the Minor Basilica and Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of the Assumption Complex.

History in the Making: Nagsayaoan Named Ground Zero for Region I Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill

NAGSAYAOAN, Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur —
For the first time in its history, Barangay Nagsayaoan will serve as the Ground Zero for a simulated earthquake impact as prt of the Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED).

The milestone comes as the Municipality of Sta. Maria proudly host the Region I leg of the nationwide drill, bringing together government agencies, emergency responders, local officials, and community stakeholders in a large-scale exercise aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and response.

According to local officials, Nagsayaoan was deliberately chosen by the municipality due to its distinct geographical condition. Surrounded by bodies of water and with no nearby mountains or elevated trails for residents to flee to during a major disaster, the barangay presents a realistic scenario for testing emergency response strategies in vulnerable communities.

As the designated Ground Zero, Nagsayaoan will become the center of simulated rescue operations, emergency medical response, evacuation procedures, and inter-agency coordination. The exercise is expected to assess the readiness of responders while increasing public awareness on disaster risk reduction and management.

Residents, volunteers, and participating organizations are set to take part in the drill, highlighting the importance of community involvement in building resilience against natural hazards.

The event will also be telecast live through the official page of the Office of Civil Defense (Civil Defense PH), allowing audiences across the country to witness the Region I simulation and the collaborative efforts of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office I (RDRRMO I), Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur (PGIS) and its Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), Municipality of Sta. Maria headed by Mayor Michael S. Florendo and Barangay Nagsayaoan.

This historic undertaking not only marks a first for Nagsayaoan but also showcases the municipality’s commitment to proactive disaster preparedness, reinforcing the message that readiness and cooperation are essential in safeguarding lives and communities. # # #
