Famed for its lush, picturesque landscapes and historic mountains, the town of Gregorio del Pilar – named after the general who made his valiant final stand in Tirad Pass – staged Ilocos Sur’s first-ever 100-Mile ultramarathon from May 28 to 30, 2026.

The grueling race commemorates the general’s valor by testing the endurance and courage of today’s runners in Ilocos Sur’s challenging terrain.

As many finishers noted in their online posts, the Battle of Tirad Pass 100-Mile Ultramarathon mirrors the town’s signature Robusta coffee: a perfect blend of aromatic finesse—found in the majestic mountain views, the warmth of the locals, and the soft embrace of the sea of clouds—and the intense flavor, driven by the dark, rugged trails and dusty winds throughout the course.

The event mapped an expansive route across the province.

Starting in Candon City, the route went through the towns of Santa Lucia, Santa Cruz, and Suyo before ascending toward the historic Bessang Pass in Cervantes.

From there, runners navigated the critical tri-boundary of Quirino, Gregorio del Pilar, and San Emilio, finally entering the host municipality, Gregorio del Pilar.

Of the 16 seasoned athletes who braved the challenging journey, Joderick Macanas Morta, 40, a second-time 100-mile ultramarathoner from La Union, completely swept the field. | Gregorio del Pilar’s first 100-mile Ultramarathon: A glimpse of history, a boost for tourism
