โWe do not need to become someone else. We only need to uncover what is already within us. And maybe that is exactly why I am here. Because this moment was never reserved for the perfect. It belongs to those who persisted.โ
โ Fajagutana, Dominique Ann Z., Magna Cum Laude, Class of 2026 Valedictorian
She didn't begin her story at the topโshe began it in the quiet in-between of ordinary days, where nothing about her felt finished, only someone choosing to continue even when she wasn't sure of herself.
That is where Fajagutana beganโnot in certainty, but in the long stretch of her years as a Bachelor of Library and Information Science student at Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges, where most days were not about becoming something, but simply about continuing to be there, a journey that quietly set the stage for what was to come.
There was nothing dramatic about it while it was happening. No clear turning points announced importance. No visible signs that paved her path to valedictorian. Instead, it was just the same rooms, the same requirements, and the same quiet effort repeated over and over again, often without assurance that it was enough.
She never really moved through college like someone who had it figured out. She moved through it like someone learning, slowly and honestly, that staying resolute amidst hesitation might matter more than feeling ready.
"I've always been terrified, but I keep trying anyway."
It doesn't sound like something meant to inspire. It sounds like something that was lived.
And maybe that is what explains her more than any recognition ever could.
Before she became the batch valedictorian, she was just a student who kept doubting herself even while doing well. The one who questioned if effort carried weight. The one who studied even when exhaustion made everything feel heavier, not because it felt admirable but because stopping never felt like something she could afford.
There were also moments where she stumbled upon failures amidst peopleโs high expectations. Despite those setbacks, it only fueled her unyielding resolve to keep trying and continue learning because she believed that showing up was the key to success.
Ignited by aspirations, it was at those times that reflected her discipline, and in moments where she had to continue without knowing if anything was actually changing.
And slowly, without announcement, without clarity, that became her rhythm.
Her stellar journey wasn't achieved by the mindset that everything has to be perfect.
"I thought doing my best meant having perfect results, no mistakes, and always performing at the highest level. But over time, I realized that doing my best also means showing up even when I am tired, uncertain, or struggling." Quoting Fajagutana in an interview.
Perhaps this is a lesson anyone can learn from. Excellence can manifest in many ways, but it doesn't have to be a 'perfect' one, like many claims; just like her story, the mere act of showing up every time is enough.
Beneath the spotlight she earned, she carried a lasting impressionโa journey defined by uncertainty that gave birth to a beacon of excellence, born not from perfection, but from persistence and a firm resolve.
Like hers, behind the smiles and tears of every graduate lies a story that is worth telling, countless moments where resilience became the option instead of backing down, all for the sake of a dream worth holding onto.
Akin to many stories of hardship and success, Fajagutana leaves a humble reminder:
โI hope people did not overlook the times I doubted myself. I was not always confident or sure of my abilities, but I learned to keep going despite uncertainty and struggles. I also hope it is understood that I am not naturally gifted or naturally smart. I reached this point through dedication, hard work, and discipline.โ
