Mr. Erwin R. Salinas and his Team successfully concluded and presented their comprehensive research findings to the Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) today. The completed study, entitled "Assessment of the Growth Performance and Meat Quality of Native Swine (𝙎𝙪𝙨 𝙙𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙨) Fed with Black Soldier Fly (𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙖 𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙪𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙨) Larvae Meal (BSFLM)," represents a significant milestone in exploring sustainable and innovative feed alternatives for native swine production. This groundbreaking research evaluates the potential of BSFLM as a protein-rich feed component, examining its effects on both the developmental progress and meat quality characteristics of native pigs.
The presentation provided an in-depth examination of the study's physical accomplishments for each objective, detailing the methodologies employed and the final findings. It also highlighted all activities that were successfully completed throughout the research, including all trials conducted, comprehensive data analysis, and thorough validation of results. Additionally, the discussion addressed the challenges encountered and overcome during the study, including feed formulation adjustments, environmental factors affecting swine growth, and logistical constraints in sourcing and processing BSFLM.
Furthermore, Phase III of the study was presented with the title "Field Validation of Black Soldier Fly Larvae Meal as an Alternative Feed Ingredient for Native Pigs in the Zamboanga Peninsula." The proposal aims to evaluate the effect of black soldier fly larvae meal (BSFLM) as a dietary protein replacement for soybean meal (SBM) on the growth performance of native pigs under actual field conditions.
This milestone reflects the team’s dedication, collaboration, and continued pursuit of science-based solutions for our farmers and communities.
