For 100 children in the coastal town of Motiong, Samar, October 29, 2025, was a day filled with joy, learning, and renewed hope as the Department of Labor and Employment โ Samar Field Office (DOLE-SFO) and the Provincial Government of Samar brought the Project Angel Tree to their community.
Through the initiative, children profiled as child laborers received food packs and school supplies, easing their familiesโ daily struggles and encouraging them to stay in school. Beyond material aid, the activity provided a safe and nurturing space where children felt valued and protected, a reminder that their dreams matter and that their community stands behind them.
The event also empowered the community to take an active role in protecting childrenโs rights. During the orientation on Republic Act No. 9231 led by Ms. Rose Anne Araza Nachura, parents and local officials gained a deeper understanding of child labor laws and how collective action can end exploitative work. The pledging of the Panatang Makabata further solidified this shared commitment to safeguarding every childโs welfare.
Adding fun and learning to the day, was a puppet cartoon show on RA 9231 titled โBatang Malayaโ, capturing the childrenโs imagination, and teaching them about their rights in an engaging and age-appropriate way. Smiles, laughter, and the sparkle of curiosity filled the municipal covered court, a reflection of the programโs lasting impact beyond the event itself.
Municipal Mayor Rene Anthony D. Cabael and Vice Mayor Renato T. Cabael both expressed their gratitude to DOLE for extending its reach to Motiong. Vice Mayor Cabael shared his own childhood experiences, underscoring how support and compassion from the community can change the course of a young personโs life.
In her closing message, Engr. Jocelyn Lampitoc, PESO Manager of Motiong, thanked DOLE and the Provincial Government of Samar for its steadfast support in realizing the activity.
More than just a gift-giving event, Project Angel Tree has become a symbol of hope, empowerment, and solidarity, proving that when a community comes together, every child can have a brighter and freer future.
