𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐨 𝐀𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐮𝐠 𝐈𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐖𝐞𝐭 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐩 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

PUDTOL, APAYAO – Irrigation water is now flowing along the canals of the West Apayao Abulug Irrigation System (WAAIS) after the NIA Apayao Irrigation Management Office opened the intake gates of the diversion dam in Barangay Swan, June 1, 2026, marking the start of water delivery for the Wet Crop 2026.

At present, four intake gates were opened to allow water flow, while two sluice gates remain closed to regulate water discharge. Prior to the opening of water delivery, maintenance activities such as canal clearing, desilting, repair of check gates, oiling of gate facilities, and drainage excavation were conducted during the irrigation cut-off period to prepare the irrigation system for operation.

For this wet cropping season, WAAIS targets to irrigate around 5,230 hectares of agricultural land covering the municipalities of Pudtol and Luna in Apayao, and Abulug and Pamplona in Cagayan. The start of water delivery supports farming activities and the timely preparation of fields within the service area.

NIA Apayao is urging Irrigators’ Associations (IAs) to strictly follow the approved cropping calendar and water delivery schedule of the WAAIS to promote efficient water distribution and management, reduce the occurrence of pests and crop diseases, strengthen coordination among farmers, and provide sufficient time for irrigation system repair and maintenance activities.

🌾🐄 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻, 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘁 🐄🌾

A total of 36 farmer-beneficiaries who are members of the Sablang Ubod Labaan Farmers Irrigators Association (FIA) participated in a Crop and Livestock Seminar held at the Paykek Barangay Hall, Kapangan, Benguet.

The activity was conducted as part of the Convergence Program in partnership with the Municipal Agriculture Office, aimed at enhancing farmers' knowledge and skills in crop production and livestock management to improve agricultural productivity and livelihoods.

The Sablang Ubod Labaan FIA is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Masacoco Communal Irrigation System (CIS), which serves 35 hectares of agricultural land in the area.

Through capacity-building activities such as this seminar, the association and its members continue to strengthen their role in promoting sustainable agriculture and efficient irrigation management.

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet- Scheduled irrigation cutoff maintenance works , Institutional Development Program (IDP) orientation , and project inspection topped the recent activities of the National Irrigation Administration- Cordillera (NIA-CAR). Several irrigators’ associations under the West Apayao Abulug Irrigation System (WAAIS) conducted canal clearing and mechanical excavation activities recently across several canal sections as part of the scheduled irrigation cut-off maintenance activities,according to NIA-CAR releases.

Members of the Gunglo ti Panay Farmers Irrigators Association and Cadaclan Irrigators Farmers Association conducted canal clearing and desilting activities in May 2026 at the Panay Communal Irrigation System (CIS) in Brgy. Panay, Sta. Marcela, Apayao and Cadaclan Communal Irrigation System (CIS) in Brgy. Cadaclan, Calanasan, Apayao in preparation for the Wet Cropping Season 2026.

The activity involved clearing grasses, removing silt, and cleaning canal sections to prepare the irrigation systems before the release of water for the cropping season.

Maintenance works focused on keeping canals free from obstructions and supporting proper water flow within the service areas. In Cadaclan CIS, the activity also covered the main canal, brushdam at the intake, and the intake of the Solar Pump Irrigation System.

The activity supports irrigation operations and water delivery to farms served by the irrigation systems. Continuous canal maintenance also helps improve water distribution, support farming activities in the area and prepare for the looming El Niño phenomenon.

Isa sa mga pangunahing aktibidad ng National Irrigation Administration (NIA) sa panahon ng irrigation cut-off ng mga National Irrigation Systems (NIS) ay ang desilting. Mahalaga ito upang matiyak ang tuloy-tuloy na irigasyon sa mga sakahan na service area ng mga ito.

𝗕𝗮𝗸𝗶𝘁 𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗸𝗮𝗸𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗸 (𝘀𝗶𝗹𝘁) 𝘀𝗮 𝗺𝗴𝗮 𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹?

Ang mga irigasyon na gumagamit ng run-of-the-river system ay direktang kumukuha ng tubig mula sa ilog. Dahil dito, natural lamang na sumama ang lupa, buhangin, at iba pang sediments na bitbit ng agos. Mas lumalala ito tuwing malakas ang ulan dahil sa:

𝗦𝗼𝗶𝗹 𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: Paghupa ng lupa mula sa mga dalisdis.
𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗲: Pagguho ng lupa mula sa matataas na lugar.
𝗞𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻: Pagsusunog ng kagubatan na nagiging sanhi ng pagkalantad ng lupa.

Kapag naiipon ang banlik sa mga kanal, humihina ang daloy ng tubig. Dahil dito, maaaring maapektuhan ang suplay ng tubig at irigasyon sa mga sakahan, na nagreresulta sa pagbaba ng ani para sa mga magsasaka.

𝗞𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗻𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴:
Ang regular na paglilinis ng mga kanal mula sa banlik tuwing cut-off ay napakahalaga upang:

Mapanatiling malinis ang mga kanal;
Maiwasan ang pagbara at pag-apaw ng tubig; at,
Matiyak ang tuloy-tuloy at sapat na suplay ng tubig sa mga sakahan.

*Whenever a predetermined national/local regular or special holiday falls within a week, offices shall revert to the original five-day work schedule for said week.

FLORA, APAYAO – The National Irrigation Administration Apayao Irrigation Management Office (IMO) is urging Irrigators’ Associations (IAs) to strictly follow the approved cropping calendar and water delivery schedule of the West Apayao Abulug Irrigation System (WAAIS).

WAAIS is set to begin water delivery on June 1, 2026, signaling the opening of the wet cropping season within the irrigation system.

The implementation of the cropping calendar is expected to promote efficient water distribution and management, reduce the occurrence of pests and crop diseases, strengthen coordination among farmers, and provide sufficient time for irrigation system repair and maintenance activities.

For the incoming wet cropping season, WAAIS aims to irrigate approximately 5,230 hectares of agricultural land covering the municipalities of Luna and Pudtol in Apayao, and Abulug and Pamplona in Cagayan. Farmers within the service area are expected to start land soaking and other land preparation activities upon the release of irrigation water.

Prior to the start of water delivery, the NIA Apayao IMO, in coordination with various Irrigators’ Associations, carried out canal clearing and desilting, repair and oiling of check gates, drainage excavation, and other maintenance works during the irrigation cut-off period. These activities were undertaken to help ensure unhampered water flow and efficient irrigation operations for the wet cropping season.
