𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐇𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 𝐎𝐅 𝐋𝐎𝐑𝐀𝐍 𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐂𝐇: 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐀 𝐍𝐀𝐕𝐈𝐆𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐓𝐎 𝐀 𝐂𝐎𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐋 𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐊

Located in Barangay Quigaray, Municipality of Bagamanoc, Catanduanes, Loran Beach traces its name to the former LORAN (Long Range Navigation) Station, a radio navigation facility established by the United States Coast Guard during the early years of the Cold War. The station formed part of the East Philippine Sea LORAN-A Chain and began operations in 1953, providing long-range navigation signals for ships and aircraft operating across the Philippine Sea.

Barangay Quigaray was selected because of its strategic location along the eastern coastline facing the Pacific Ocean. The station housed antenna towers, radio transmitters, communication equipment, power facilities, and support buildings that continuously transmitted navigation signals, helping mariners and aviators determine their position decades before satellite-based Global Positioning System (GPS) technology became widely available. The facility also supported emergency response and logistical operations throughout its years of service.

The LORAN Station remained under the operation of the United States Coast Guard until March 31, 1971, when it was officially transferred to the Philippine Coast Guard under a bilateral agreement between the Philippine and United States governments. The Philippine Coast Guard continued operating the station until December 31, 1977, when the LORAN-A navigation system was eventually phased out as newer navigation technologies became available.

Following the closure of the navigation station, the site in Barangay Quigaray gradually became known as Loran Beach. Although the original navigation facilities are no longer operational, the area remains an important historical landmark that reflects Bagamanoc's contribution to maritime navigation and coastal safety. In recent years, the former LORAN property has also been identified as the site of a planned Philippine Coast Guard Base, recognizing its continuing strategic importance.

Today, Loran Beach is recognized as one of Bagamanoc's notable coastal destinations, offering visitors scenic ocean views while preserving an important chapter of the municipality's history. More than a tourist attraction, it serves as a reminder of Barangay Quigaray's role in international maritime navigation and the continuing significance of Bagamanoc's eastern coastline to the country's maritime heritage. Building on this legacy, the National Government, through the Philippine Coast Guard, is currently undertaking the construction of a Coast Guard Station at the former LORAN site. Once completed, the facility is expected to strengthen maritime safety, coastal security, disaster response, and emergency operations in the eastern seaboard of Catanduanes while preserving the historical importance of the area.

Oplan Bantay Signal is an initiative of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) that monitors and validates mobile and internet connectivity in communities across the country. The program helps identify areas with weak or no cellular signal and supports planning for improved telecommunications services.

Through Oplan Bantay Signal, the DICT works with mobile network operators and local government units to assess network coverage and gather data that can help improve connectivity, particularly in underserved and geographically isolated areas.

Residents are encouraged to report persistent mobile signal or internet connectivity concerns to support more accurate assessments and future network improvement efforts.

The Municipality of Bagamanoc, Catanduanes is expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with possible isolated rain showers or thunderstorms on Wednesday, July 15, 2026. Light to moderate southwesterly winds and slight to moderate coastal waters are expected due to the enhanced Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).

Residents are encouraged to remain cautious, especially during localized rain showers and thunderstorms that may develop throughout the day. Those with outdoor activities and small sea vessels are advised to stay updated on the latest weather conditions before traveling.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) continues to expand the Administrative Petition for Correction Automated System (APCAS) to provide faster, more convenient, and more efficient processing of petitions for the correction of civil registry documents.

Residents may now file eligible petitions through Local Civil Registry Offices using APCAS in the following municipalities in Catanduanes:

- Municipality of VIGA
- Municipality of VIRAC

Visit the Local Civil Registry Office in the municipalities mentioned above for more information on APCAS services and the requirements for filing administrative petitions.
