Tēnā koutou katoa.
Ko Glenn McGahan ahau, ko Tūhoe te iwi, ko Rūātoki te kāinga. He pitopito kōrero tēnei nāku ki a koutou.
I’m standing for the Toi ki Uta Māori ward on the Whakatāne District Council. It’s a privilege to put my name forward and offer myself as a voice for our people and communities across
the rohe.
I’m a father, a koro, a ringawera, and a tonotono at my marae.
Over recent weeks, you’ve seen the signs go up and heard from many candidates at public meetings. I acknowledge all who have put themselves forward. Today, I’m speaking directly to you the people who carry the vision of our tīpuna and the future of our tamariki.
Anei ōku whakaaro
I’m voting to keep Māori wards. This is about equity, not division. We are good for Council. Māori wards help correct the imbalance and give us a voice that reflects our responsibility as
tangata whenua. We are guided by our values and tikanga this brings strength and depth to the leadership and work of Council in our region.
I didn’t set out to become a politician. I come to this from a place of responsibility and care for our people, our environment, and the future we are building together. This role is not about titles, it’s about serving with respect, upholding mana whenua, and ensuring Council decisions reflect the voice and values of our people.
In any team, progress comes when we listen, collaborate, and lead with integrity. That’s what I bring: governance and commercial experience, grounded in tikanga. I want to ensure
our decision-making reflects both the real challenges we face and the cultural responsibilities we carry.
Yes, the big issues remain such as council debt, rising rates, aging infrastructure. These challenges are real. We need strong leadership, clear direction, and councillors who will hold Council to account and protect the interests of our community.
I’m asking for your vote — to represent you, to be your tonotono on Council, and to keep Māori wards strong and meaningful. Together, let’s uphold our responsibilities, protect
what matters, and lead with purpose.
