From a party member!
----------------------
"I am often reproached for continually attacking the rich. Yes, because the rich are continually attacking the poor. But those I attack are not the rich as such, only those who misuse their wealth. I point out constantly that those I accuse are not the rich but the rapacious. Wealth is one thing, covetousness another. Learn to distinguish."
-St. John Chrysostom
My name is Rev. Chris Orczy. I am the Anglican Inner City Chaplain, ministering among the homeless at the City Mission Chapel and on the streets. I am blessed to have the opportunity to do this work.
I was not bought up a Christian. My conversion was by watching Midnight Mass from Christchurch Cathedral in 2006. Early in the journey, I remember being so pleased that my new found faith was not at odds with my political leanings. It was a relief to learn that Jesus spent a lot of his time on Earth teaching about the dangers of wealth and the plight of the poor.
My political leanings have always been with the Alliance. I voted for NewLabour in the 1990 election, then the Alliance in 1993, 1996, 1999, 2002, and 2005.
I have seen what has happened to this country under neoliberalism, first with Rogernomics, and then continued by every government under both major parties. I do not believe this is the way for 90% of people, especially for those who have so little.
What we are witnessing now with our current government is not only neoliberalism, but a joyous callousness, a revelling in cruelty. I cannot sit back and see so many people suffer and be treated as less than human just because they weren’t born into wealth.
I believe the Alliance is the party that is offering the best policies on wealth inequality, housing, health, and education. They are policies that are most in line with the teaching of Jesus.
"The rich are in possession of the goods of the poor, even if they have acquired them honestly or inherited them legally."
St. John Chrysostom
