Here's a behind-the-scenes look as Tūhono - the new trains for the lower North Island - begins to take shape.
Tūhono will deliver modern, lower-emission trains for the Wairarapa Line and replace the Capital Connection service between Palmerston North and Wellington. It’s a big step forward for comfort, reliability and accessibility across the network.
Right now, the focus is on the driver cab. We’re working alongside drivers and train managers to test and refine layout, visibility and ergonomics, making sure the design supports safe, smooth journeys every day.
Getting these details right early matters - for the people running the service and the customers who rely on it.
We’re proud to be working in partnership with Alstom, Transdev and KiwiRail to bring these new trains into service

📢Temporary outage for contactless payments (e-pay) on buses

Contactless payment functionality (e pay) on board buses is temporarily unavailable from this afternoon due to a software issue with Snapper validators.

Metlink and Snapper are working together to resolve this issue as quickly as possible, and a software update is expected to be deployed in the next few days.

In the meantime, passengers can continue to travel using Snapper cards or cash.

Train and ferry contactless payments are unaffected by this outage.

We will update passengers when contactless payments are restored to buses.

📢 Consultation is now open to share your feedback on proposed changes to Harbour Quays and improvements for the Eastern Bus Corridor.

🚌 The Harbour Quays project will create a second city bus corridor along Whitmore Street, Customhouse Quay, Jervois Quay, Wakefield Street and Cable Street. This will help improve efficiency and reliability across the bus network, while easing delays and congestion along the Golden Mile (Courtenay Place, Manners Street, Willis Street, and Lambton Quay).

We’re also consulting on improvements to the Eastern Bus Corridor between Miramar and the city, upgrading bus stops to work as high-capacity stops, allowing two buses at once, improving accessibility, and helping people get on and off quickly and safely while keeping traffic moving.

📆 Consultation is open until 5pm, Sunday 14 June 2026.

🚌 A bus depot construction site on Kauri Street in Miramar became a hub of creativity and community in March, with local students unveiling vibrant murals along the fence.

🚸 As part of the construction of the new electric bus depot, Metlink and Naylor Love invited nearby schools to celebrate Wellington’s electric buses and the new place they will call home through art. Preschoolers to high school students, from five local schools took part, creating murals inspired by our city’s people, places, transport, environment and culture.

🖌 Seeing these colourful artworks displayed in front of the scaffolding and steel was a great reminder of how major projects can reflect and support the community. Thanks to all the schools - Curious Minds Kindergarten Miramar, St Anthony’s School, Strathmore Park Kindergarten, Worser Bay School and Scots College who took part and shared their amazing creativity.

Planning a trip to the public opening of the Ngauranga to Petone section of Te Ara Tupua on Saturday? This 4.5km section of the shared path will open for walking, running, and cycling.

Public transport makes it easier to get there, with bus stops and train stations at both ends of the path. But remember – there is limited space for bikes on Metlink buses, trains and ferries.

🚆Take the Hutt Valley Line from Wellington and hop off at Ngauranga Station, then use the underpass and walk three minutes north to the start of the path.

If taking the train from north of Petone, hop off at Petone Station and walk south for 10 minutes to Honiana Te Puni Reserve where the other end of the path begins.

🚌 From Wellington, catch bus 1, 52 or 83 and hop off on Hutt Road near Jarden Mile, stop 3262 for Route 1 & 52, and stop 3263 for Route 83.

In Lower Hutt, catch any bus that stops outside Bunnings on Hutt Road, stop 8001 or Petone Station, stop 9000.

🚲 Cycling – there are only three bike spaces available on each train service and two on buses.

⛴️ If you want to take the Wellington Harbour ferry with a bike, make sure you use their new booking system.

If planning to visit Te Ara Tupua on Sunday this weekend, please note buses will replace trains each evening from 7.30pm between Petone and Wellington on the Hutt Valley Line until Wednesday 20 May.

Use the Metlink journey planner or app to work out the best way to get there.
