This week is National Volunteer Week in Aotearoa, a dedicated time to honour the collective energies and efforts of volunteers across the country. We are always grateful to our wonderful tenant volunteers and kaitiaki, who generously give their time, skills and aroha to the communities they are part of. Whether they're cooking up a storm for community lunches, strategising the best way to support whānau in their complexes, packing Kaibosh orders or running workshops and skills-sharing sessions, they are all superstars who help build a thriving, joyful and safe Pōneke. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou! 😍

Big mihi to New Zealand Coalition to End Women's Homelessness for releasing this important report last week, on children and young people's experiences with homelessness and housing precarity. The report found that for tamariki and rangatahi, homelessness presents huge challenges across multiple areas of their lives, with higher rates of abuse, disengagement from education, poorer health outcomes and interaction with the justice system.

https://www.coalitiontoendwomenshomelessness.org/waka-huia/research-release-children-and-young-people-experiencing-homelessness

These findings shed light on the damaging flipside of what our own research, on the benefits of social housing, shows: that when we invest in social housing, we see better health outcomes for people (e.g. healthy homes reduce respiratory symptoms by 33%), more children in school for longer and overall stronger communities. (for that report, click here: https://www.tetoimahana.org.nz/report)

Thank you to the coalition for this critical piece of work, calling attention to the far-reaching consequences of housing precarity, and the need for access to safe, stable and affordable housing for everyone.

On Tuesday, we were delighted to welcome a delegation from Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to our Wellington office as part of their official visit to New Zealand.

Led by Vice Chairman Hoang Nguyen Dinh, the delegation included representatives from construction, environment, education, foreign affairs and other key agencies from the Vietnamese capital.

The visit provided a great opportunity to celebrate best practice and to exchange perspectives on social and affordable housing, urban development and community outcomes.

Chief Executive, Jonathan Manns, shared Te Toi Mahana's experience as one of New Zealand's largest community housing providers; including the Trust's growing development programme and its comprehensive tenant-centred approach to service delivery and mana whenua representation.

We were equally interested to learn more about Ho Chi Minh City's ambitious housing programme, including its aspiration to deliver 200,000 new homes by 2030 through radical interventions to unlock supply through both the public and private sector.

While the scale of our communities differs, there is a shared focus on delivering the best possible outcomes through high-quality and affordable homes.

A massive mihi to our manuhiri for taking the time to meet with us. We hope you enjoyed your time in Wellington and look forward to continuing the exchange of ideas and experiences that help create better housing outcomes for the communities we serve.

As Wellington's population grows, so too will housing pressure. But this won't affect everyone equally. The greatest challenges will fall on lower-income renters, families with children, and larger or multi-generational households, especially from ethnic minority communities. 🏡

There is a real, significant and growing need for more social housing. Investing in social housing leads to a healthier population, and a greater opportunity for people to reach their full potential. 🌟

Last week, we took full advantage of the sunshine ☀️ and organised a little community barbeque at 114 The Terrace. 114 is a temporary home for many of our tenants whose complexes are undergoing works as part of Wellington City Council's Housing Upgrade Programme phase 2 (HUP2). HUP2 will deliver warm, dry, safe and secure social housing that better meets the needs of future and current tenants. Our kaimahi had lovely yarns with our tenants, many of whom are loving inner-city living, and we're looking forward to building on the community spirit with more events (and sausage sizzles)!

To our tenants, a huge welcome to 114 The Terrace! 💓

Community Housing Aotearoa - CHA have just published their latest Insight Report, casting an important spotlight on the sobering reality of homelessness and housing in Aotearoa. Read it here: https://chahub.org.nz/api/qr/113

Among the findings the report backs the call that many of us in the housing sector have consistently made: to properly address homelessness, social housing in Aotearoa must be rapidly expanded.

As our recently published report 'Delivering Value: The Economic Benefits of Social Housing' shows, social housing is not a cost to our society: it is a critical investment that offers a broadly threefold return on investment. You can also read our report on our website: tetoimahana.org.nz/report. Thank you CHA for this critical piece of work!

Over the weekend, BGI (Wellington Boys' and Girls' Institute) organised a Youth Week event at Berkeley Dallard, to celebrate the young people in our homes and inviting the wider community that has helped to nurture them! We hope everyone who attended enjoyed the kai and sports games - thank you to BGI and to everyone who helped out! 🛝
