Couldn’t bear to pull out these flowering salad greens to plant tomatoes, the bees are adoring them too much and so am I, so I’ve experimented with creating pockets within for the tomatoes to get established. The flowering stalks can continue giving joy and gradually be removed and used as mulch for the growing toms…🐝
Inspired and emboldened by Kath .backyard, whose new book I am greatly enjoying 😊
(PS - spontaneous appreciation, not an ad 😆)

There’s so much to do at this time of year it’s hard to know where to start. Big day today clearing winter gone-to-seed crops, loading up the compost and preparing for summer things to go in…wish I was organised enough for before and after shots but that would require starting out with a clear plan! …halfway through shots are much more achievable 😂

A big change to the garden this spring - we have made the decision to transition it back from a market garden to a massive home garden! Simon has a new job and I’m planning a return to midwifery part time, so am letting go of the time-intensive harvest/wash/deliver, which opens up a lot more opportunity for self sufficiency, carbon crops, perennials and growing for storage 🌱🌻🥕

Leek, carrot, purple kohlrabi, brocolli, cauliflower, bok choy flowers, purplette onion…still quite a few bits and pieces for an early spring dinner forage 😊

A week of sunshine and enforced homeliness has resulted in epic progress on the fourth and final block of our garden…so much so that it is a relief to collapse in an exhausted heap and appreciate a bit of rainy weather! 😂

Musings on Father’s Day…this quad bike is the newest addition to our farming endeavour and is super helpful for shifting things like mulch. It was given to us as a broken wreck, and Simon brought it back to life, involving the kids along the way. I feel like a large percentage of the things we own come to us this way, and it is a big factor in being able to live the life we do. Simon’s Grandad and Dad were also known in their communities as those people who could fix anything. And although I can’t claim to have picked up the gift, my Dad was the same, building everything from scratch, fixing the car, and generally knowing how stuff worked. I know this gift is by no means limited to Dads! But to all the Dads in MY life who are fixers, makers and mentors…you make the world a better place 💛

A day this wet and muddy seemed like a great time to experiment with alternative carrot washing methods
