Ever wondered what MIST is?

Based out of Greymouth, the Major Incident Support Team (MIST) is a unit within St John designed to respond to major incidents, mainly mass casualty incidents.

The team is comprised of dedicated volunteers who are able to provide non-clinical support to frontline ambulance staff at an incident. This includes things like setting up a triage area, putting a tent or gazebo up, and providing welfare support to clinical staff responding to the incident.
Our Incident Support Vehicles (ISV) also contain lots of additional equipment and caches of extra medical supplies that frontline ambulances in their day to day operations don’t have space for.

The team is not specifically ‘on call’ at certain times but rather whenever members are available and within a reasonable distance from the station. Upon activation, team members have to be in the ISV and on the road within 30 minutes.

The West Coast team responds to incidents from Karamea to Haast, as well as big incidents further away if operationally necessary. Being such a large area, we also have an auxiliary vehicle and team members based out of Westport.

We are also one of many, pictured below are ISV’s from Nelson and Blenheim, plus Greymouth on the right.

Last weekend, the three Major Incident Support Teams from across Tasman came together in Murchison for an overnight training camp focused on sharpening skills and strengthening teamwork.

The goal was simple: get back to basics and ensure every team member is confident and capable in using the full range of equipment we carry. Most importantly, the weekend reinforced our shared commitment to supporting frontline staff with professionalism, efficiency, and expertise whenever an incident calls for additional support.

The training was a great success, with Marlborough, Nelson, and West Coast teams working seamlessly together, backing one another up, and building even stronger connections along the way — all while enjoying a well-earned dose of team camaraderie.

The teams are trained, prepared, and ready to assist. If you need support, don’t hesitate to call on MIST — we’re here to help!
