On the 1st of May, Banks Peninsula candidate Kyle Turnbull and our president Tom Roud had the privilege of marking 75 years since the 1951 Waterside Lockout with the Maritime Union of New Zealand in Lyttelton.
This news, unprecedented in New Zealand history, is extraordinarily welcome.
MUNZ are a proud union, and we are proud to be in the fight with them.
Alliance Party Welcomes Historic Affiliation of Maritime Union of New Zealand
On 3 June I addressed the National Council of the Maritime Union of New Zealand at Waterside House in Wellington.
They unanimously voted to affiliate to the Alliance Party of Aotearoa New Zealand
Thus historic and unprecedented decision unites one of the country’s most iconic and effective trade unions with the Alliance Party.
I am humbled by the faith and support offered by the Maritime Union. This is the oldest Union in New Zealand with a massive history and is the core of the organised working class.
The affiliation of the Maritime Union to the Alliance is a game changer for the 2026 election and going forward, for advancing an uncompromising working class voice in New Zealand politics.
MUNZ has a proud, unbroken history, and this step aligns perfectly with the Alliance constitutional objectives of socialist principles of democracy, equality, and social ownership.
The Alliance will be campaigning in 2026 on economic resilience, infrastructure and KiwiWorks, a 21st century Ministry of Works, all focussed on supporting working people and their families.
The Alliance will also prioritize revitalizing New Zealand shipping and rail, and keeping our ports and infrastructure in public ownership.
This affiliation is an acknowledgement of the MMP environment, and the Alliance is committed to working with other opposition parties to remove the Coalition Government.
The Maritime Union will maintain its long-standing affiliation to the New Zealand Labour Party.
