My sister sent me this cute pic of our mum and some of us and my nieces. This Samoan language week theme E afua mai mauga manuia o le nuu takes me back down memory lane and all the lessons we learned from our High Chief Mother. She was fearless and had strong conviction in keeping our Samoan culture and language alive in every aspect of the work she did. She was for change but always sought ways to keep our people in the centre of it and not be left behind by it. As we grow- I look back at how she was at my age and I marvel at how much she had achieved with all the challenges there were. I have been reflecting on the manuia mai mauga- blessings from mountains… and that for me one of these blessings was having a strong matai and advocate of a mother who showed us the way to be fearless, to advocate, to nurture and to always be for the collective.

Pt Chev walk today- so beautiful. We walked until the retirement home compound, and a lovely lady let us through the back gate to cut through to the road. What a beautiful retirement village for the elderly! But really appreciating our local Auckland walking spots- my walking partner who instigated today’s savaliga . We stopped for coffee at a local cafe with stroppy staff 😂

Passion project: Books for Savai’i. We’re having a quiz night fundraiser to get the books collected to schools on the island of Savaii. We grew up there and books were a valuable resource for us. We want to give back to help the next generation on island with their education.

Louisa Tipene Opetaia & Ama Mosese were recommended to me by our news reader Marama T-Pole. They run a tour company focused on showing off South Auckland's Mangere, or as they put it "an underappreciated cultural gem."
