6 Practical Steps

The first and simplest thing, yet a powerful tool, that a leader should do: to listen, and listen well. If you succeed in this first task as a leader, then, you are assured to get the respect from your team. By listening you get to know more the individuals, you get to understand better the problems, and you get to find best solution to any problem. Learn to listen and your team listens to you as well!

The best measurement of a good leadership is when you are able to “transfer” positive skills and values to your team players: they become leaders themselves — reliable, take initiative and ownership, work with integrity, and contribute to the overall success of the team. Empower your team and you get a powerful team!

To motivate others to work as a team and to achieve success: you must acknowledge and appreciate their positive contributions and recognise their achievement. This simple act of recognition could bring positive impact to individuals and it would encourage them more to work harder. Acknowledge your team and you will be acknowledged too as a good leader!

Of course, as a leader you need to serve as a model to your team. You need to walk the talk. Don’t just talk, do! Deliver the results you expect others to achieve. You only become a true leader if you “lead” the team. You are willing to take challenge before you give it to others. Deliver good results and your team will notice it!

Importantly, as a leader you need to enjoy working with your team. You enjoy the success of your team. You let your team enjoy their work. Enjoyment means your team doesn’t feel fear when you are around. The team is free to express their opinion. Everyone works with a sense of fulfillment, whatever work that is. There is enjoyment if everyone feels they are respected, whatever their ranks and titles. There is a sense of “equality” where everyone can work with a sense of dignity. If you enjoy your work, then your work becomes enjoyable! Read it again!

The last step is to find time to rest: you and your team. Make sure that work-life balance is achieved. After working so hard, after achieving successes, you all deserve a “break.” Break means to find time to rest for a while, to enjoy a good lunch break, to go for a nice meditative walk, to catch-up with other colleagues at coffee breaks, or just to have an early log-out and spend time with family and friends. Rest is as important as working. Rest to recharge your body and mind so that you can work effectively again the next day. Recharge so that you can give more: you can only give what you have. Rest and you become a stronger leader!
