In Banglachuli Rural Municipality, Lumbini Province, LISP conducted a two-day orientation for Local Government (LG) Engineers and field engineers focused on improving Defects Liability Period (DLP) management, assessing the current status of DLP practices within LGs while providing a focused learning to strengthen construction quality, accountability, and long-term sustainability.

Although often considered a routine aspect of project management, DLP plays a critical role in the infrastructure lifecycle, directly linking construction quality with contractor accountability and durability of assets.

Over the two days, participants engaged in:
• In-depth discussions on the technical aspects of DLP management
• Field visits to identify and assess real-time defects
• Practical exercises on enforcing DLP obligations in contract-based works

The orientation provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and hands-on learning, equipping participants with improved understanding and practical tools to strengthen DLP implementation in their respective LGs.

In Shubhakalika Rural Municipality (RM), Kalikot, Karnali, constructed the Dharakhola Tusikot Irrigation Pond approximately 25 years ago. Over time, however, the infrastructure began to deteriorate, leading to significant water leakage and an unreliable supply of irrigation water. It became a serious challenge for farmers and impacted agriculture productivity across the area.

The RM, prioritised the rehabilitation and maintenance of the pond this fiscal year 2082/ 83 (2025/ 26). LISP is currently providing technical assistance to the RM for the infrastructure project, renewing the hopes of an estimated 233 households who depend on this vital source of water for their farmlands.

The rehabilitated pond is expected to improve water conservation, ensure a more reliable and efficient water system, and contribute to the adoption of more sustainable agriculture practices in the community.

Women initially listed as unskilled laborers now actively participate in skilled construction tasks!

The Bagar Bheri Embankment Project, supported by LISP and co-financed by Nalgadh Municipality engaged 21 local workers - nine of them women - to implement the project.

Women’s leadership is central to this effort: the Users Committee (UC) is led by a woman, with another woman serving as the Treasurer. To ensure quality, safety, and inclusion, LISP supported the UC through pre‑construction training on inclusion standards, Occupational Health and Safety, CPP & PSEAH policies, among others. Through hands‑on, on‑site guidance, committee members—especially women—developed practical construction skills, including gabion box fabrication, gaining confidence and experience they can carry into future opportunities."

LISP supported Dimugaira-Tatopani Road in Putha Uttarganga, East Rukum stands as a benchmark for for community-driven, resource efficient development in Nepal. This project emphasises local employment generations, inclusion of women workers, and utilisation of locally available construction materials.

👷 Why This Project Matters:

Champions of Local Employment and Inclusion: With a daily mobilisation of 15 Dalit and Janajati workers (averaging 7 females and 8 males), the project is actively narrowing the gender gap and providing meaningful livelihoods.

Sustainability at the Core: By sourcing sand from the Tatopani River and stone from the Mayang quarry, we’ve slashed transportation costs and reduced our environmental footprint through smart, local resource management.

Economic Impact: With daily wages of NPR 1,200 (skilled) and NPR 990 (unskilled), the project puts money directly back into the pockets of the community."

“पानीले गर्दा पहिले हामीलाई धेरै दुःख थियो, आजभोली त एकदम ठिक छ हामीलाई ।” उपभोक्ता समिति (UC) सदस्य श्रीमती मिना बुदाले भनिन् ।

With support from the Local Infrastructure Support Programme (LISP) – funded by UK in Nepal – the community in Ward No. 6, Gurans Rural Municipality, Dailekh, Karnali, identified and prioritised the construction of the Jamadhakna to Panga Irrigation Scheme, implemented through a UC model.

For years, the women and even small children in the ward walked long distances to fetch water for their fields. Broken canals, unreliable water flow, and constant repairs made planting seasons very stressful.

Today, things have changed:
💧The water reaches field reliably.
🙆‍♀️Women no longer carry the heavy burden of walking hours for water.
🌧️Rainwater is better managed and streamlined through the system.
✅Fields stay greener, productivity increases, and families have more stability.

The scheme serves 220 people across 40 households, where women account for 51.4% of the total population.

Where water flows, equality grows
