Ambassador Joe Popolo: I had the privilege of visiting the KNVB campus and meeting the Dutch national team. I saw their dedication firsthand: is ready, and the United States stands prepared to welcome them with open arms. I can tell you this: on June 14 in Dallas, I’ll be cheering for all of you. And Dallas? That’s my hometown. So, this is personal for me in every way. I cannot wait to see you there . Go Oranje!

On , we remember the Americans who gave their lives for freedom and the lasting friendship between our country and the Netherlands. “To the fallen: we will never forget you. Your sacrifice was not in vain. You rest here in honored glory, cared for by a grateful nation, remembered by a grateful world.” - Ambassador Popolo, during his 2026 Memorial Day remarks at Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten

At the Netherlands American Cemetery, U.S. Ambassador Joe Popolo, and members of the U.S. Department of Defense in The Netherlands joined grave adoption families, American Scouts, and members of the U.S. Mission community to plant flags in tribute to our fallen heroes.  With every flag placed, we remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom—and ensure their legacy lives on through the next generation and across borders. 🇺🇸🇳🇱

Today, on , we pause to honor the memory of those who lost their lives in war and conflict, and those who continue to suffer its consequences. I had the honor of attending the commemoration at the Dutch National Veterans Cemetery in Loenen. Standing among those who gave their lives and those who’ve risked their safety for ours brings a profound sense of humility and reflection.

Across the Netherlands, moments of silence remind us that remembrance is not only about the past—it is a commitment to the future. We remember the cost of freedom, the courage of those who stood against injustice, and the responsibility we share to uphold the values that bind us.

We remember a pivotal moment in 1945, when Kamp Amersfoort was transferred from German control to the Red Cross on April 19, marking a step toward 🇳🇱 liberation.

Raymond Kesnig was only 10 days old when he was given prisoner number 574, making him the youngest detainee in the camp. Kesnig's story was shared by his son at this year's commemoration ceremony, and he also laid a wreath at the monument together with former prisoner Hans Gerritsen.

This year, the 81st anniversary was attended by hundreds, including 🇺🇸 Deputy Chief of Mission Marcus Micheli. Together, we reflect on history, honor those affected, and reaffirm our shared commitment to freedom and human dignity.
