Crime crosses borders. Justice must be able to do the same.

The European Commission is proposing to strengthen Eurojust’s cooperation with eight additional partner countries: Bolivia 🇧🇴, Canada 🇨🇦, Chile 🇨🇱, Costa Rica 🇨🇷, Ecuador 🇪🇨, Panama 🇵🇦, Peru 🇵🇪 and the United Arab Emirates 🇦🇪.

Once negotiated and concluded, these agreements would enable Eurojust and the judicial authorities of each partner country to:

🔹 exchange operational information and personal data, under robust safeguards
🔹 deploy Liaison Prosecutors at Eurojust to ease judicial cooperation
🔹 establish and support joint investigations with EU Member States
🔹 cooperate more quickly and effectively across borders

This will help judicial authorities tackle cross-border threats such as drug trafficking, cybercrime and money laundering more quickly and effectively.

All agreements will include strong safeguards for personal data, privacy and fundamental rights, in line with EU law.

The Council will now examine the Commission’s Recommendation.

🚨 Eurojust cooperation with Iraq supports landmark terrorism conviction in Slovenia

The ruling marked the first judgment in Slovenia in which an asylum seeker was sentenced to five years in prison for membership of a foreign terrorist organisation. The judgment is not yet final.

⚖️ Time was critical. Evidence was needed from Iraq before the maximum period for the accused’s remand in custody expired. Eurojust provided swift support to Slovenian prosecutors, helping obtain crucial evidence within the tight timeframe.

🤝 The cooperation made use of the recently signed Working Arrangement between Eurojust and Iraq’s National Centre for International Judicial Cooperation.
