National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS) NAERLS is saddled with the responsibility disseminating proven agricultural technologies/ information & advance the frontiers of Extension in Nigeria.

The National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services grew out of the Specialist Services Section of the former Northern Nigeria Ministry of Agriculture to provide a formal link between the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) and the Ministry of Agriculture in 1963 as Research Liaison Section (RLS) to ensure that research results get to farmers in adoptable form. In 1968, followi

ng the dissolution of the regional structure, RLS was transferred to IAR and became known as Extension and Research Liaison Section (ERLS). Consequently, the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Council, in accordance with Statute 19, separated ERLS from IAR in 1975 and renamed it the Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (AERLS). Thus, AERLS, became an autonomous Institute within the Agricultural Complex of the University under the aegies of the then Federal Ministry of Science and Technology (FMST), similar to IAR. Following the reorganization of the research institutes by the then Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, a number of changes in the mandates of several research institutes were made in April 1987. In recognition of its contribution to successful extension and research support services in the Northern States of Nigeria, AERLS thus earned a national mandate which transformed it to the National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS). To execute its mandate effectively, NAERLS immediately established 5 zonal offices, one each in the 5 agro-ecological zones of Nigeria.

NAERLS, SSANU Hold Talks on Agricultural Skills Training for Members
Bulletin No 43 16th June, 2026
Zaria, Kaduna State
The National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has commenced discussions with the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), ABU Zaria Branch, on the provision of agricultural skills training for members of the union, particularly women, as part of efforts to promote self-reliance and entrepreneurship.
The Executive Director of NAERLS, Prof. Yusuf A. Sani, represented by the Deputy Director, Prof. Muhammad Musa Jaliya, received the SSANU delegation during a courtesy visit to the institute on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. The delegation was led by the Branch Secretary of SSANU, Comrade Bashir Yakubu.
Speaking during the visit, Comrade Bashir expressed appreciation to the management of NAERLS for the warm reception accorded to the delegation. He explained that the association was seeking collaboration with the institute to empower its members, especially women, with practical agricultural skills that would enable them to become self-dependent and financially secure ahead of retirement.
According to him, the union intends to train its members in poultry and fisheries production to equip them with the requisite knowledge and practical skills needed to establish profitable agribusiness ventures.
“We want our members, particularly women, to acquire skills that will help them become self-reliant and create sustainable sources of income. We are planning to commence with the training of about 500 women members of the union,” he stated.
Responding, Prof. Jaliya briefed the delegation on the mandate and operations of NAERLS as a leading agricultural research and extension institution in Nigeria. He highlighted the institute’s role in disseminating agricultural innovations and technologies to farmers across the country.
The Deputy Director also outlined some of the challenges affecting agricultural extension services in Nigeria, particularly the shortage of extension agents needed to effectively reach the nation’s growing farming population.
He noted that NAERLS has continued to leverage conventional media platforms such as radio and television, alongside its digital agricultural extension communication platform, the Farmers Helpline, to bridge the information gap between researchers and farmers nationwide.
Prof. Jaliya assured the delegation of the institute’s willingness to support capacity-building initiatives aimed at promoting agricultural entrepreneurship. He subsequently introduced the visitors to the Head of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Centre of the institute for further discussions and necessary arrangements toward the proposed training programme.
The meeting is expected to pave the way for a strategic partnership between NAERLS and SSANU in enhancing agricultural skills development and entrepreneurship among university staff members.

NAERLS, KSMC Partner to Deliver Expert Farming Tips Nationwide, Sign MoU
The National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS) and the Kaduna State Media Corporation (KSMC) have on Thursday 11th June, 2026 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening the dissemination of agricultural information to farmers across Nigeria.
The partnership seeks to bridge the gap between agricultural research institutions and smallholder farmers by leveraging KSMC's radio and television platforms to deliver timely, relevant, and practical farming information to millions of farmers nationwide.

Speaking during the signing ceremony held at the NAERLS headquarters in Zaria, the Executive Director of NAERLS, Prof. Yusuf Ahmed Sani, described the event as a strategic milestone in the institute's efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and improve farmers' livelihoods.
According to him, NAERLS serves as a hub of agricultural information with the mandate to disseminate proven innovations, technologies, and best practices to farmers across the country.
"NAERLS is committed to ensuring that farmers have access to reliable and research-based information that can improve productivity, increase income, and enhance livelihoods," he said.
Prof. Sani, however, noted that inadequate funding and the high cost of media airtime have limited the institute's ability to effectively reach its target audience, particularly smallholder farmers who constitute the majority of agricultural producers in Nigeria.
He expressed optimism that the partnership with KSMC would significantly expand the reach of agricultural extension messages and contribute to achieving national food security objectives.
In his remarks, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of KSMC, Hon. Ben S. D. Kure, represented by Zakari Aliyu, stated that the relationship between NAERLS and KSMC spans more than two decades.
He explained that the new agreement was not the beginning of a partnership but rather a strategic expansion of an existing collaboration geared toward supporting agricultural development and national food security.
"The partnership between NAERLS and KSMC is not new. What we are witnessing today is the strengthening of a long-standing relationship that will further enhance access to agricultural information for Nigerian farmers," he said.
Zakari Aliyu also conveyed the assurances of the KSMC Managing Director that the corporation would fully implement the terms of the MoU and work beyond expectations to ensure that the collaboration benefits farmers and the nation as a whole.
Under the agreement, NAERLS will provide KSMC with research-backed content on recommended agricultural practices, improved seed varieties, climate-smart agriculture, market information, and other topical issues affecting the agricultural sector.

KSMC, on its part, will dedicate airtime for agricultural programmes in both English and Hausa languages and collaborate with the NAERLS Farm Broadcast Team in producing television packages and other agricultural content for wider dissemination.
The signing ceremony, which took place in the institute's boardroom, was attended by principal officers from both NAERLS and KSMC, marking the beginning of a renewed partnership aimed at enhancing agricultural information delivery and supporting sustainable agricultural development across Nigeria.
The signing concluded with the presentation of souvenirs to the KSMC team and a group photograph to commemorate the occasion, marking the beginning of what both parties hope will be a fruitful partnership aimed at enhancing agricultural extension service delivery in Nigeria.
