Chapter 97: The Empty Record

By the time Kael reached the next city, the story had already become something larger than the battle that created it.

He heard his own name before he heard anyone speak to him directly.

It happened inside a crowded hunter hall just after noon.

The hall was filled with the usual noise of cultivators arguing over missions, merchants negotiating prices and wounded hunters complaining about the difficulty of recent contracts. Kael entered quietly and walked toward the registration counter, keeping the Sword of Authority wrapped across his back.

He had barely taken three steps when a young hunter near the mission board suddenly turned around.

"Wait."

His companion frowned.

"What?"

The young man stared at Kael.

"The sword."

Kael continued walking.

The hunter followed him with his eyes.

"Black sword."

His companion laughed.

"There are thousands of black swords."

"Not like that."

Kael reached the counter.

The attendant looked up.

"Name?"

"Kael."

The woman's fingers stopped moving.

For a moment, she simply stared at him.

Then she looked at the registry in front of her.

Nothing.

She searched again.

Still nothing.

"You're not registered."

"No."

"Are you a cultivator?"

"Yes."

"Hunter?"

"Not yet."

The attendant hesitated.

"Then why are you here?"

Kael glanced toward the mission board.

"To register."

A murmur began spreading behind him.

The attendant lowered her voice.

"Are you..."

She stopped.

Kael waited.

"Are you the Kael from Blood Mist Valley?"

He didn't answer immediately.

"Which one?"

The woman's expression became awkward.

"The one who killed the Blood Moon Beast."

The hall became noticeably quieter.

Kael looked toward the mission board again.

"That depends on who is telling the story."

Someone laughed from behind him.

"He's the one."

A heavy-set hunter stepped away from the wall.

"I saw the body."

Another man stood.

"I heard Elder Ren personally witnessed it."

Someone else added,

"They said he killed it alone."

"No."

A fourth voice interrupted.

"They said he fought Varek too."

The hall erupted.

Kael remained still.

The stories were already changing.

Some were exaggerating.

Others were inventing details.

But the important part remained unchanged.

His name was spreading.

The attendant finally recovered herself.

"Rank?"

"None."

She looked at him.

"Do you understand that your first registration will place you at the lowest hunter rank?"

"Yes."

"You can only accept low-level missions."

Kael nodded.

"Register me anyway."

The woman completed the process.

A thin metal token slid across the counter.

Kael picked it up.

His name was engraved upon it.

KAEL.

Nothing else.

No title.

No achievement.

No rank worth mentioning.

He closed his fingers around the token.

Everyone had to begin somewhere.

The hall gradually returned to its usual noise.

Kael walked toward the mission board.

He wasn't interested in ordinary requests.

His eyes moved across the parchment notices until one caught his attention.

Mountain Fang Beast.

The reward was modest.

The danger...

Wasn't.

Kael removed the parchment.

The hunter standing beside him stared.

"That's a C-rank mission."

Kael looked at him.

"I know."

"You can't accept that."

"Why?"

"Because you're unranked."

Kael handed the parchment to the attendant.

She looked at it.

Then at him.

"He's right."

Kael remained silent.

The woman sighed.

"Fine."

She stamped the mission.

"But if you die, don't blame the guild."

Kael took the parchment.

"I won't."

He turned toward the exit.

The same young hunter from earlier followed him outside.

"Kael."

He stopped.

The hunter hesitated.

"Why are you taking a mission above your rank?"

Kael glanced at the mountains in the distance.

"Because that's where the stronger beasts are."

The hunter stared.

Kael continued walking.

Behind him, the young hunter remained frozen.

For some reason...

That simple answer frightened him more than any boast could have.

---

Three days later, the Mountain Fang Beast was dead.

Kael returned to the city before sunset.

The beast's head was enormous.

Four hunters were required merely to move it into the guild hall.

The attendant who had registered Kael stared at the co**se.

Then at him.

"You killed this?"

"Yes."

"Alone?"

"Yes."

She looked at the mission parchment.

The C-rank request had been considered dangerous even for experienced hunters.

Kael had completed it without requesting assistance.

She quietly opened the Hunter Registry.

His name was still at the bottom.

Unranked.

She stared at it.

Then she looked at the co**se again.

"This doesn't make sense."

Kael shrugged.

"It doesn't need to."

She looked at him for several seconds before reaching for another form.

"Wait here."

"Why?"

"I'm sending this to the assessment hall."

Kael frowned.

"I only completed a mission."

"No."

The attendant looked toward the enormous beast head.

"You just gave the guild a problem."

Kael almost smiled.

"What problem?"

She placed the form on the counter.

"Your rank."

Outside the hall, more hunters were gathering.

They had heard.

Another beast.

Another impossible kill.

And once again...

The same name began moving from mouth to mouth.

Kael.

The unranked hunter.

The swordsman.

The rogue.

Nobody knew yet how far that name would eventually travel.
Chapter 98: The Assessment

The assessment hall was quieter than the main guild chamber.

There were no merchants here.

No noisy hunters arguing over missions.

Only cultivators waiting behind heavy wooden doors while guild officials measured their strength and determined whether the rank written beside their names actually reflected what they could do.

Kael stood alone in the center of the first examination room.

Across from him stood a middle-aged examiner holding a thin crystal tablet.

"I've read the report."

Kael said nothing.

"You completed a C-rank mission alone."

"Yes."

"You killed the Mountain Fang Beast with one hand?"

Kael looked at him.

"Who told you that?"

"The hunter who witnessed the co**se."

Kael almost sighed.

Stories were spreading faster than he could walk.

The examiner studied him carefully.

"Your cultivation?"

Kael answered honestly.

The examiner's expression changed slightly.

"Again."

Kael repeated it.

The man stared at him for several seconds.

"That's impossible."

Kael shrugged.

"I didn't come here to convince you."

The examiner placed the crystal tablet on a stone pedestal.

"Fine."

"Then we'll test combat ability."

A heavy door opened behind him.

Kael entered the arena.

The floor was made from reinforced black stone, covered with countless scars left by previous battles.

The examiner stepped outside.

"First test."

"Defeat the guardian."

The ground shook.

A stone beast rose from beneath the arena.

Four legs.

Thick armor.

Two enormous horns.

Its spiritual pressure immediately filled the chamber.

Kael looked at it.

The creature roared.

Kael drew the Sword of Authority.

The examiner watched through the observation window.

"Don't hold back."

The beast charged.

Kael stepped forward.

The collision lasted less than three breaths.

The guardian struck with its horn.

Kael shifted sideways.

His sword passed beneath its jaw.

One cut.

The stone beast froze.

Then its head slid from its body.

The examiner's mouth opened slightly.

He looked down at the timer.

Four seconds.

He stared through the window.

"Again."

The arena changed.

This time...

Three guardians appeared.

Kael didn't move immediately.

They surrounded him.

One attacked from the front.

Another from behind.

The third waited.

Kael suddenly disappeared.

The first guardian's attack struck empty air.

Kael appeared beside the second.

His sword flashed.

Its leg shattered.

He spun beneath the third guardian's attack and drove his shoulder into its chest.

The creature staggered.

Kael finished the first.

Then the second.

Then the third.

The examiner stared.

"Six seconds."

The assistant beside him swallowed.

"Should we increase the difficulty?"

The examiner looked at Kael.

"Yes."

The arena changed again.

This time...

A cultivator entered.

A real one.

He wore the guild's combat uniform and carried a spear.

The examiner spoke through the formation.

"Your next test is against a registered B-rank hunter."

The spear wielder smiled.

"Don't worry."

"I won't kill you."

Kael raised his sword.

"I didn't ask you to."

The hunter's smile disappeared.

The formation activated.

He attacked.

The spear came like lightning.

Kael blocked.

The impact pushed him backward.

For the first time...

He moved more than one step.

The hunter attacked again.

Kael twisted away.

The spear grazed his robes.

A third strike.

Kael parried.

His eyes sharpened.

This opponent was different.

The B-rank hunter suddenly changed his stance.

A technique.

The spear split into multiple afterimages.

Kael's expression became focused.

He stepped backward once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

The next strike came.

Kael moved.

His sword struck the shaft of the spear at precisely the point where the attack was weakest.

Crack.

The weapon broke.

The hunter froze.

Kael's blade stopped against his throat.

Silence filled the arena.

The examiner slowly lowered his crystal tablet.

The B-rank hunter looked at the broken spear in disbelief.

Kael withdrew the sword.

"Your weapon was too predictable."

The hunter stared at him.

Then laughed bitterly.

"You're not unranked."

Kael said nothing.

The examiner opened the arena door.

"You've passed."

Kael walked toward him.

"What rank?"

The examiner looked at the data recorded on the crystal tablet.

Then at Kael.

"At least B."

The assistant frowned.

"At least?"

The examiner nodded.

"We don't have enough evidence to determine the upper limit."

He looked toward the arena where the broken guardians still lay.

"Your physical ability, combat awareness, reaction speed and swordsmanship are all far beyond what your cultivation suggests."

Kael calmly took his Hunter Token.

"So?"

The examiner sighed.

"So you're being promoted."

He engraved a single letter onto the metal.

B.

Kael looked at it.

B-rank.

He had expected more.

The examiner noticed his expression.

"You aren't satisfied."

"No."

"Good."

The old examiner smiled faintly.

"Then don't become satisfied."

Kael turned toward the exit.

Behind him, the examiner watched quietly.

He had assessed thousands of hunters.

Some possessed talent.

Some possessed powerful backgrounds.

Some possessed extraordinary cultivation.

But Kael was different.

The young man did not seem excited by promotion.

He looked as though B-rank was merely another obstacle that had appeared on his path.

And obstacles...

Were meant to be conquered.

Chapter 95: Three Bells

The third bell had barely faded before Elder Ren turned toward the eastern mountains.

"Move."

The command was sharp enough that every guild member reacted immediately.

"What happened?" one of the hunters asked.

Ren did not answer.

He looked at Kael instead.

"You killed that beast too quickly."

Kael wiped the blood from his shoulder.

"Too quickly?"

"Yes."

Ren's gaze remained fixed on the black ring.

"The bell isn't for the beast."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"Then what is it for?"

A fourth bell rang.

This time, the sound was closer.

The forest trembled.

Every Blood Wolf still hiding among the trees suddenly raised its head.

Then they began running.

Not toward Kael.

Away.

Hundreds of them poured through the forest, crashing through branches and tearing across the slopes as though something far more terrifying than the hunters had entered their territory.

One of the guild members stared in disbelief.

"They're fleeing."

Ren's grip tightened around his spear.

"Everyone prepare."

A fifth bell rang.

The sound rolled across the mountains.

Then came screaming.

Not one voice.

Dozens.

The Crimson Guild immediately formed a defensive line.

Kael looked toward the road.

Shapes were appearing through the rain.

Men.

Dozens of them.

They wore black armor marked with a crimson crescent.

Ren's expression became murderous.

"The Blood Crescent."

The leading warrior stepped into the clearing.

He was enormous, with a shaved head and a heavy iron axe resting across his shoulder. His cultivation pressure erupted outward the moment he arrived, forcing several injured hunters backward.

His eyes immediately found the co**se of the Blood Moon Beast.

Then Kael.

Then the ring.

The warrior's expression changed.

"So the rumor was true."

Kael raised his sword slightly.

"What rumor?"

The man laughed.

"You don't even know what you're carrying."

He pointed his axe toward Kael.

"Take the ring."

"No."

The answer came instantly.

The warrior's smile disappeared.

"Then we'll take it from your co**se."

He charged.

Kael stepped forward.

The axe came down with enough force to split the ground.

Kael raised his sword.

Clang!

The impact blasted both men apart.

Kael slid backward.

The warrior remained standing.

His eyes widened slightly.

Kael looked at the Sword of Authority.

A small crack had appeared in the muddy earth beneath his feet.

Strong.

But not overwhelming.

Kael attacked.

The distance between them disappeared.

His sword struck the warrior's chest.

The black-armored man twisted, allowing the blade to scrape across his armor rather than pe*****te it. His axe immediately swung sideways.

Kael ducked.

The axe passed above his head.

He stepped inside.

Elbow.

Rib.

Knee.

The warrior staggered.

Kael turned his wrist.

The Sword of Authority flashed.

The black armor split.

Blood erupted across the rain.

The warrior dropped to one knee.

Kael raised the sword.

"Wait!"

Ren's voice stopped him.

Kael glanced sideways.

Ren was staring at the warrior.

"Let him speak."

Kael lowered the blade slightly.

The wounded man laughed through the blood filling his mouth.

"You think killing me changes anything?"

He coughed.

"The moment that ring absorbed the Blood Moon Beast..."

His eyes shifted toward Kael.

"...the people who have been searching for it already know."

Kael's expression remained cold.

"Who?"

The warrior smiled.

"You'll find out."

He suddenly bit down.

Ren's expression changed.

"Stop him!"

Too late.

The man's body convulsed.

Dark veins spread across his neck.

Kael immediately stepped backward.

A violent spiritual explosion erupted from the man's body.

BOOM!

The surrounding hunters were thrown from their feet.

Kael planted his sword into the ground and held himself against the shockwave.

When the smoke cleared...

The warrior was dead.

Ren walked toward the co**se.

His expression was grim.

"Poison."

Kael looked at him.

"Who are the Blood Crescent?"

"A faction that should have remained buried."

Ren crouched beside the body and pulled aside the man's armor.

A black symbol had been carved directly into his chest.

Three intersecting lines surrounding a small circle.

Kael recognized it.

It was almost identical to the symbol engraved inside his ring.

His eyes hardened.

Ren noticed.

"You've seen that before."

"On the ring."

The old hunter looked toward him.

"Then we have a problem."

Kael pulled the ring from his finger.

For the first time, the tiny symbol on its inner surface was glowing.

Not brightly.

But enough to be seen.

The dead man's mark answered it.

A faint pulse travelled through the clearing.

Then another.

Far away...

Something answered.

Ren stood immediately.

"Everyone leave."

The guild members stared at him.

"Elder?"

"NOW!"

No one argued.

They began retreating.

Kael remained still.

Ren grabbed his shoulder.

"You too."

Kael looked at the old man's hand.

Then at the forest.

"I want to know what is coming."

"You don't."

Another pulse shook the earth.

The Blood Moon Beast's co**se suddenly moved.

Its enormous body rose several inches from the ground before collapsing again.

The ring grew hotter.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

Something was using the dead beast as a signal.

Then the forest went completely dark.

Not night.

Dark.

Every flame carried by the hunters extinguished simultaneously.

A pressure descended from above.

The trees bent.

The ground cracked.

And from somewhere deep within the mountains came a voice.

"Found..."

A pause.

"...you."

Kael slowly tightened his grip around the Sword of Authority.

Elder Ren's face became pale.

Because the voice had not come from the forest.

It had come from beneath them.

The ground exploded.

Something enormous began forcing its way upward.

Chapter 96: Beneath the Earth

The ground erupted.

A massive claw tore through the soil directly beneath the clearing, sending mud, roots and broken stone into the air.

Kael moved before anyone else.

His body flashed backward as the ground beneath him collapsed completely.

Elder Ren grabbed two injured hunters and pulled them away while the remaining guild members scattered in every direction.

Then something climbed out.

It was not a beast.

At least...

Not anymore.

Its body was covered in black scales, but much of its flesh appeared fused with stone. Four enormous arms dragged it from the earth while a pair of pale eyes opened beneath a crown of jagged horns.

The pressure that came from it silenced the entire forest.

Kael's expression became serious.

This thing was stronger than the Blood Moon Beast.

Much stronger.

The creature opened its mouth.

A low growl emerged.

Then it attacked.

One arm swept across the clearing.

Kael raised his sword.

BOOM!

The impact drove him backward.

His boots tore through the earth.

Before he could recover, another arm came from the side.

Kael ducked.

The fist passed over his head and crushed an enormous tree behind him.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

Too slow.

He stepped forward.

The Sword of Authority flashed.

A black line appeared across the creature's arm.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the entire limb fell.

The creature screamed.

Everyone froze.

Elder Ren stared at the severed arm.

His expression changed.

That sword...

It had cut through the creature's defensive scales as though they weren't there.

The monster roared and charged.

Kael didn't retreat.

He moved toward it.

The creature's remaining arms attacked simultaneously.

One from above.

One from the left.

Another from behind.

Kael's body twisted between them.

His sword moved with him.

One slash.

Two.

Three.

Each strike landed precisely where the previous one had weakened the creature.

Blood erupted.

The monster staggered.

Kael stepped onto its enormous shoulder.

His spiritual energy surged through his body.

He raised the Sword of Authority.

The creature looked upward.

For the first time...

Fear appeared in its eyes.

Kael brought the blade down.

The sword entered through its skull.

The enormous body collapsed.

The earth shook.

Silence returned.

Kael stood upon the co**se, breathing steadily.

The battle had lasted less than a minute.

Elder Ren slowly lowered his spear.

He looked at Kael for several seconds before speaking.

"You've become stronger."

Kael glanced at the sword.

"I know."

There was no arrogance in his voice.

Only certainty.

He jumped down from the co**se.

The black ring suddenly pulsed.

The dead creature's chest split open.

Something small rolled out.

A stone.

Kael caught it.

The moment it touched his palm, the ring stopped glowing.

The stone was black.

A single crimson line ran through its center.

Elder Ren approached carefully.

"Don't touch that."

Kael looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because that creature wasn't born here."

Kael studied the stone.

"Then where?"

Ren's expression became grim.

"The northern ruins."

Kael waited.

"The place where the Crimson Guild has been losing hunters."

He looked toward the dead creature.

"We thought the beasts were becoming corrupted naturally."

Ren's eyes settled upon the stone in Kael's hand.

"We were wrong."

Kael closed his fingers around it.

"Someone is creating them."

Ren nodded.

"And whoever is doing it..."

He looked toward the distant mountains.

"...is searching for something."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The ring became warm once more.

But this time...

He ignored it.

He had already learned enough.

The world was larger than he had imagined.

There were stronger beasts.

Stronger cultivators.

Hidden factions.

Ancient objects.

And somewhere beyond all of it...

His own path continued.

Kael turned toward the road.

Elder Ren called after him.

"Where are you going?"

Kael didn't stop.

"Forward."

He walked away from the ruined clearing while the Crimson Guild remained behind to deal with the co**se.

By the time the sun disappeared beyond the mountains, the first rumor had already begun travelling along the hunter routes.

A young rogue cultivator had killed a Blood Moon Beast.

Then another rumor followed.

He had defeated a creature that had forced the Crimson Guild to retreat.

By the next city...

The story had changed again.

They called him a swordsman.

Then a monster.

Then a hunter.

And somewhere inside the Hunter Registry...

A blank record was waiting for a name.

Chapter 93: The Ring Moves

The warmth lasted only a heartbeat.

Then it disappeared.

Kael lowered his arm slowly, his eyes remaining fixed upon the battlefield. The explosion had torn open a large section of the forest, leaving broken trees scattered across the muddy ground. Smoke and steam mixed with the rain while fragments of stone continued falling from above.

Varek and Elder Ren had vanished.

Kael's spiritual perception spread outward.

There.

Above.

A violent collision shook the treetops.

Varek emerged from the smoke first, spinning through the air before landing on one knee. Blood ran from the corner of his mouth, but he immediately wiped it away and laughed.

Elder Ren landed several steps away.

His spear remained firmly in his hand.

The old man's breathing had finally become heavier.

"You've become troublesome," Ren said.

Varek grinned.

"You were already old when I first met you."

Ren's eyes hardened.

The spear moved.

Varek barely raised his whip in time.

Boom!

The impact forced him backward, his boots tearing through the earth.

Kael watched carefully.

Varek was strong.

Very strong.

But Elder Ren was more experienced.

The old man's attacks carried no wasted movement. Every strike forced Varek into another position, gradually reducing the space available to him until his movements became increasingly restricted.

The guild members surrounding the battlefield understood it as well.

Their expressions relaxed.

Varek was losing.

One of them whispered,

"Elder Ren has him."

Another nodded.

"Finally."

Kael did not agree.

Something was wrong.

Varek was smiling.

Not the careless smile he had worn earlier.

This one was different.

He looked...

Satisfied.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

Varek suddenly released the whip.

It fell uselessly into the mud.

Elder Ren's spear stopped halfway through its next thrust.

For the smallest fraction of a second, the old man's expression changed.

That was enough.

Varek slammed both palms together.

A violent roar erupted from the forest.

The Blood Wolves returned.

Not from the front.

From beneath the ground.

The earth exploded as six wolves burst upward simultaneously, their bodies covered in thick crimson spiritual energy.

They didn't attack Kael.

They attacked the guild formation.

Chaos erupted.

"DEFEND!"

The surrounding cultivators immediately scattered.

One wolf crashed into a tree where a guild member had been standing a moment earlier. Another tore through a defensive formation before its claws struck the shoulder of a second cultivator.

Blood sprayed across the rain.

Elder Ren turned.

"Varek!"

The Beast Tamer laughed.

"You should have watched your surroundings."

He whistled once.

Every surviving Blood Wolf retreated toward him.

Kael finally understood.

The entire battle had been a distraction.

Varek had never intended to defeat Elder Ren.

He had intended to create an opening.

And that opening...

Was already closing.

Varek's eyes suddenly met Kael's.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Varek smiled.

"Until next time, swordsman."

He turned.

The wolves followed.

Kael immediately stepped forward.

He could have pursued.

His speed was sufficient.

Yet before he could move, something slammed into the ground directly in front of him.

Elder Ren's spear.

The old man's eyes were cold.

"Don't."

Kael stopped.

Varek disappeared into the forest.

The wolves vanished after him.

Kael looked toward Elder Ren.

"You let him escape."

Ren pulled his spear from the ground.

"So did you."

Kael said nothing.

The old man studied him.

"You could have followed."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you?"

Kael glanced briefly at the black ring upon his finger.

"I had no reason to."

Elder Ren's eyes narrowed.

That answer seemed to interest him more than expected.

"You don't chase every strong opponent you encounter?"

"No."

"Good."

Ren looked toward the direction Varek had disappeared.

"Then you're smarter than most hunters."

Several guild members were helping their injured companions now. The battlefield had become a mess of broken trees, blood and mud.

Kael looked at the bodies.

"Why were you hunting him?"

Elder Ren sighed.

"He began as a beast hunter."

His gaze hardened.

"Then he discovered he could control corrupted spirit beasts."

"And?"

"He stopped hunting them."

Kael understood.

"He started creating them."

Ren nodded.

"Exactly."

He glanced toward the forest.

"Those Blood Wolves weren't born naturally."

Kael's expression changed slightly.

"How many?"

"At least three hundred."

The answer was quiet.

Kael looked toward the dark forest.

Three hundred.

The wolves he had fought tonight were only a fraction.

Elder Ren continued.

"We found his breeding grounds two weeks ago."

"Then why haven't you destroyed them?"

The old man's face became grim.

"Because something else is there."

Kael waited.

Ren did not immediately continue.

Instead, he looked at the Sword of Authority.

Then at Kael.

"You aren't a normal rogue cultivator."

Kael's expression remained unchanged.

"I never said I was."

A faint smile appeared on Ren's face.

"No."

"You didn't."

He reached into his robe and removed a small crimson token.

He tossed it toward Kael.

Kael caught it.

The token carried the same silver beast emblem worn by the guild members.

"What is this?"

"A hunter's token."

"I don't belong to your guild."

"You don't need to."

Ren turned away.

"Bring me Varek alive..."

He paused.

"...and I'll make sure your name enters the Hunter Registry."

Kael looked down at the token.

"The reward?"

"Ten thousand Crowns."

Kael raised an eyebrow.

"Only?"

Elder Ren stopped.

Several guild members stared at Kael.

The old man slowly turned around.

"You think ten thousand isn't enough?"

Kael looked toward the ruined forest.

After everything he had seen in the cultivation world, ten thousand Crowns no longer sounded impressive.

"No."

He tossed the token once in his palm.

"I think he's worth more."

Elder Ren stared at him for several seconds.

Then...

He laughed.

A deep, unexpected laugh that echoed through the ruined forest.

"Perhaps."

He turned away again.

"Perhaps you're right."

Kael placed the token inside his robe.

He did not accept the mission.

He did not reject it either.

For now...

He simply continued down the road.

Yet after taking only a few steps, he stopped.

The black ring became warm again.

This time...

The warmth did not disappear.

Kael looked down.

A thin line had appeared across the surface of the ring.

It was glowing faintly.

And beneath his feet...

Something answered.

A deep vibration travelled through the earth.

Kael slowly raised his head.

Far away...

Beyond the forest...

Something had awakened.

Chapter 94: The Blood Moon Beast

The vibration beneath Kael's feet grew stronger.

He looked toward the forest.

The trees were moving.

Not from the wind.

Something enormous was pushing through them.

A distant roar rolled across the mountains, deep enough to shake rainwater from the branches. Every injured hunter in the clearing stopped what they were doing.

Elder Ren's expression changed.

"Everyone back."

No one questioned him.

The Crimson Guild immediately retreated toward the ruined road.

Kael remained where he was.

Another roar.

Closer.

A massive tree snapped in half.

Then another.

Something emerged from the darkness.

It was a wolf.

But calling it a wolf would have been an insult to the word.

Its body was nearly twice the size of an ordinary horse, covered in black fur streaked with dark crimson lines. Two enormous horns curved backward from its skull, while a vertical red eye opened above its normal pair.

Blood dripped from its jaws.

The moment it stepped into the clearing, the surrounding Blood Wolves lowered themselves completely.

Elder Ren's face became grim.

"Blood Moon Beast."

One of the younger hunters whispered,

"That's impossible."

Ren tightened his grip on his spear.

"It should have been impossible."

The beast's gaze slowly moved across the clearing.

Then...

It stopped on Kael.

The black ring on his finger became hot.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The beast roared.

The ground exploded.

It crossed the clearing in an instant.

Kael drew the Sword of Authority.

Clang!

The beast's claw collided with the blade.

The impact sent Kael sliding backward.

Three meters.

Five.

Ten.

His boots dug through the mud before he finally stopped.

The sword trembled in his hand.

Kael looked at the beast.

Strong.

Very strong.

A grin slowly appeared on his face.

Finally.

Something worth fighting.

The Blood Moon Beast attacked again.

Its enormous claws descended.

Kael stepped sideways.

The claw smashed into the ground.

Kael's sword flashed.

A black arc cut across the beast's foreleg.

Blood sprayed.

The beast roared.

Kael immediately realized something.

The wound was already closing.

Regeneration.

He moved again.

The beast's tail swept across the clearing.

Kael ducked beneath it and drove the Sword of Authority upward.

The blade pierced through the creature's thick hide.

The beast screamed.

Kael twisted the sword.

The wound widened.

Yet instead of retreating...

The beast opened its jaws.

A crimson sphere formed inside its mouth.

Kael's instincts screamed.

He released the sword.

His body vanished.

BOOM!

A beam of blood-red energy tore through the clearing.

Trees disappeared.

Stone melted.

The mountain road split apart for nearly fifty meters.

Kael reappeared on the other side.

His expression had changed.

That attack...

Could kill him.

The Blood Moon Beast turned.

Its red eye locked onto him.

Kael slowly wiped blood from the corner of his mouth.

The beam had grazed him.

Only a scratch.

But it had drawn blood.

Elder Ren stared.

"He's alive?"

One hunter swallowed.

"That attack..."

Ren didn't answer.

Kael tightened his grip around the Sword of Authority.

His cultivation surged.

For the first time since leaving Blood Mist Valley, he stopped suppressing himself.

Spiritual energy erupted from his body.

The rain around him scattered.

The black blade began vibrating.

The Blood Moon Beast lowered its body.

Kael lowered his sword.

Both moved.

The collision came so quickly that the hunters could no longer follow it.

The beast's claws struck from three directions.

Kael blocked one.

Dodged another.

The third tore through his shoulder.

Blood sprayed.

Kael ignored it.

His sword entered beneath the beast's ribs.

The creature twisted violently.

Kael was thrown into a tree.

The trunk shattered.

He landed on his feet.

The beast charged again.

Kael didn't retreat.

He stepped forward.

Their attacks collided at the exact same moment.

The beast's claw pierced his side.

Kael's sword pierced its chest.

Both stopped.

Rain fell between them.

The Blood Moon Beast looked down.

Black steel had passed through its heart.

For several seconds...

Nothing happened.

Then the beast's enormous body collapsed.

Kael pulled the sword free.

The creature hit the ground hard enough to shake the clearing.

Silence.

Kael stood over it, breathing heavily.

Blood ran down his arm.

His shoulder burned.

His ribs ached.

But his eyes were clear.

He had won.

Not because the beast was weak.

Not because the Sword had solved the battle for him.

He had simply found the opening...

And taken it.

The hunters stared.

Elder Ren slowly lowered his spear.

The young hunter who had mocked Kael earlier looked as though he had forgotten how to speak.

Kael turned toward the co**se.

The black ring suddenly pulsed.

Once.

The dead beast's blood began moving.

Everyone froze.

The crimson liquid flowed backward across the ground, gathering around Kael's feet before slowly rising toward the ring.

Kael looked down.

The ring absorbed the blood.

Nothing else happened.

The beast's co**se became completely pale.

Elder Ren's expression changed.

"Impossible..."

Kael raised his head.

"What?"

Ren stared at the ring.

"Where did you get that?"

Kael's fingers slowly closed.

"Why?"

The old hunter's face had lost all color.

"Because..."

He looked toward the co**se.

"...that ring hasn't appeared in the world for three hundred years."

Kael said nothing.

Far away, beyond the mountains...

A bell suddenly rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then a third time.

The Crimson Guild members looked at one another.

Ren's expression hardened.

"Someone knows."

Kael looked toward the distant mountains.

The battle was over.

But the moment he had killed the Blood Moon Beast...

Something else had begun.
