🌍 World Environment Day 2026: Activating the HFC Phase-Down in Nigeria! 🇳🇬
On this World Environment Day, the National Ozone Office, Federal Ministry of Environment Nigeria, is proud to reiterate our commitment to safeguarding our atmosphere and combating climate change.
As we face escalating global climate challenges, the time for decisive action is now. Engr. Idris Abdullahi, the National Ozone Officer and Director, has delivered a critical charge to all stakeholders, industries, and citizens across the nation:
"As part of the HFC phase-down plan, it is critical that we transition to Low-GWP refrigerants. Choose and demand technologies that use these newer, climate-friendly gases and refrigerants. Our choices today impact tomorrow’s climate."
🔍 Why This Matters
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are powerful greenhouse gases frequently used in cooling and refrigeration systems. By actively phasing down these substances and transitioning to Low Global Warming Potential (GWP) alternatives, Nigeria is directly contributing to lowering global temperatures and fulfilling our obligations under the Montreal Protocol's Kigali Amendment.
💡 How You Can Take Action:
For Technicians & Industries: Adopt best practices in refrigeration management and transition to climate-friendly, low-GWP natural refrigerants.
For Consumers: Look for modern, energy-efficient cooling appliances that use eco-friendly gases when purchasing refrigerators or air conditioners.
For Everyone: Spread awareness! Every decision to opt for green technology helps secure a safer, cooler planet for the next generation.
Let us work together to protect our environment, heal our ozone layer, and secure a sustainable future.

On World Environment Day, we celebrate one of the clearest examples of successful global environmental action🌿

Nearly four decades on, the Protocol continues to deliver—protecting the ozone layer and contributing to environmental protection.

This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the Kigali Amendment, a vital extension that is helping to phase down potent greenhouse gases and keep global temperature rise in check bit.ly/4lfavxF

These milestones remind us that multilateralism works.

With ambition, science, and cooperation, we can safeguard our planet for future generations. 🌍✨

On 19th May 2026, Kelechi E. Mbah represented the Director/National Ozone Officer, Abdul Idris, at the 9th International Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Exhibition Mega Clima Expo where he delivered the Keynote Address on behalf of the National Ozone Office and the Federal Ministry of Environment.

Speaking on the theme, **“Cooling Africa Responsibly: Performance, People and Sustainable HVAC&R,”** the keynote highlighted the critical role of sustainable cooling in addressing climate change, promoting energy efficiency, and supporting economic development across Africa.

The address showcased Nigeria's achievements under the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment, including:
✅ Transition to climate-friendly and low-GWP refrigerants;
✅ Capacity building and certification of RAC technicians;
✅ Upgrading of RAC training centres;
✅ Promotion of energy-efficient cooling technologies;
✅ Implementation of the Nigeria Cooling Action Plan (NCAP); and
✅ Ongoing efforts towards the phasedown of Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

The National Ozone Office reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with industry stakeholders, promoting sustainable cooling solutions, supporting workforce development, and advancing Nigeria's climate and environmental objectives.

Together, we can build a cleaner, more energy-efficient and climate-resilient future through responsible cooling and sustainable HVAC&R practices.

The risks of skin cancer rise with increased UV exposure ☀️

Thanks to the Montreal Protocol the ozone layer is recovering and helping to reduce the amount of harmful UV reaching Earth—but the risk isn’t gone.

Protection still matters: Sunscreen is essential 🧴 Use it on 27 May and every other day!
