A'Ibom Govt, LDS Church Distributes Mobility Aids, Empower Clinicians and Artisans

The Akwa Ibom State Government and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have strengthened efforts to improve the welfare of Persons with Disabilities with the distribution of wheelchairs and walking aid devices, alongside the successful training of local clinicians and artisans on the coupling, fitting, repair, and maintenance of mobility aids.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the three-day training programme held in Uyo, the Honourable Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga, described the intervention as a significant step toward enhancing mobility, independence, and dignity for Persons with Disabilities in Akwa Ibom State.

Princess Ibanga said the training had successfully equipped clinicians and artisans with practical skills in the assembly, fitting, adaptation, repair, and maintenance of wheelchairs and walking aid devices, thereby strengthening the state's capacity to provide quality mobility support services.

She expressed profound appreciation to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the humanitarian gesture, noting that beyond the donation of the mobility devices, the church also facilitated the deployment of expert physiotherapists from Uganda who trained local professionals, ensuring that beneficiaries would receive properly fitted and maintained assistive devices.

The Commissioner also commended Governor Umo Eno for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of vulnerable persons, stating that the Governor facilitated the clearance and payment processes required for the successful delivery of the donated equipment.

According to her, the intervention aligns with the administration's ARISE Agenda, which prioritizes inclusion and empowerment through educational support grants, social welfare programmes, strategic appointments, employment opportunities, and other initiatives targeted at Persons with Disabilities.

She noted that while government remains committed to supporting vulnerable groups, the scale of existing needs requires collaborative efforts from development partners, faith-based organisations, and the private sector.

"This collaboration has further strengthened the partnership between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Government of Akwa Ibom State, creating a solid foundation for future initiatives that will positively impact the lives of our people," she said.

Princess Ibanga also acknowledged the contributions of stakeholders whose support contributed to the success of the programme.

Addressing the participants, the Commissioner congratulated the trained clinicians and artisans for successfully completing the programme and urged them to utilize their newly acquired knowledge to improve support services for Persons with Disabilities across the state.

She emphasized that the intervention would not end with the training, revealing that the coupling, fitting, and distribution of wheelchairs and walking aids would continue to ensure that beneficiaries receive mobility devices tailored to their individual needs.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Eno Akpan, traced the project's origin to discussions held in 2024 between the Church and the State Government, noting that the initiative had grown into a successful intervention through sustained collaboration. She expressed gratitude to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Ugandan facilitators, and all stakeholders whose support and commitment contributed to the success of the programme.

Mr. Nsimenta explained that the wheelchairs and walking aids were carefully assembled and customized to meet the specific needs of individual users, noting that every disability presents unique mobility challenges that require appropriate solutions.

He stated that the training equipped clinicians, technicians, and artisans with the skills needed to assess users, modify mobility devices, and carry out repairs and maintenance. According to him, beneficiaries were professionally assessed and provided with suitable mobility aids that would enhance their independence, mobility, and overall quality of life.

In his vote of thanks, One of the participants, Mr Chukwuma Onya, thanked the Akwa Ibom State Government, the Ministry, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the training. FG’s Free Sanitary Pads Programme Will Restore Dignity to A’Ibom Girls – Emem Ibanga

The Federal Government’s Flow With Confidence campaign under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) has been described as an intervention that will tackle period poverty, improve menstrual hygiene, and restore dignity to girls in Akwa Ibom State.

The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga, stated this during the flag-off of the Flow With Confidence campaign initiated by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in Uyo on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

Ibanga noted that the campaign would not only restore the dignity and confidence of girls but also address the long-standing stigma and menstrual-related hardships many of them have endured.

“The Flow With Confidence campaign under the Renewed Hope Initiative of Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is a bold step towards restoring dignity, confidence, and hope to young girls,” Ibanga said.

“For too long, menstrual health has been surrounded by silence, shame, and harmful myths that have made many girls feel embarrassed about a natural part of womanhood. This campaign is changing that narrative by reminding every girl that her womanhood is not a burden, but a gift to be embraced with pride and confidence.”

The Commissioner commended the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Lady Helen Eno Obareki, for prioritising the wellbeing and confidence of schoolgirls in the state.

She also appreciated Governor Umo Eno, PhD, for supporting the programme, describing the intervention as evidence of the state government’s commitment to the dignity and empowerment of the girl child.

Earlier, the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Lady Helen Eno Obareki, said the initiative would provide sanitary pads to vulnerable schoolgirls to ensure that menstruation no longer prevents them from attending school.

According to her, the Renewed Hope Initiative procured sanitary pads worth over ₦2.5 billion for distribution across the country, with Akwa Ibom receiving 10,000 packs for girls in rural communities.

She urged local government chairmen, community leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure that the products reached deserving beneficiaries free of charge.

Providing further insight into the programme, the focal person of the Renewed Hope Initiative in Akwa Ibom State, Emem Ini Orok, said the programme aims to empower schoolgirls through self-care, dignity, and menstrual health education.

She appreciated the support of Lady Helen Eno Obareki and Governor Umo Eno in ensuring the success of the initiative across communities in the state.

“As women and girls, caring for ourselves is essential. Our bodies naturally go through various changes. Therefore, good hygiene, proper menstrual care, healthy habits, discipline, and self-confidence are important,” she said.

Orok encouraged the students to pay attention to the health education sessions and apply the lessons in their daily lives, noting that confident and healthy girls would grow into stronger women in the future.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Inibehe Etukudo, described the intervention as proof of the First Lady’s commitment to supporting girls and addressing menstrual health challenges.

The Commissioner for Education, Professor Ubong Essien, said the initiative would help reduce school absenteeism among girls and encourage them to remain focused on their education despite menstrual challenges.

The event also featured goodwill messages from government officials, women leaders, and stakeholders who called for sustained support towards ending period poverty and promoting menstrual health awareness among adolescent girls.

Akwa Ibom State has joined the global community in commemorating the 2026 World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day with renewed calls for collective humanitarian action, compassion, and sustained support for vulnerable populations.

The 163rd anniversary celebration, held Friday, May 8, at the Women Development Centre, featured humanitarian awards, goodwill messages, cultural performances, and anniversary cake-cutting.

Speaking as Guest of Honour, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to humanitarian governance, social protection, and strategic partnerships aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable citizens.

Represented by the Director of Administration and Supplies in the ministry, Mr. Edwin James, the Commissioner described the theme, “United in Humanity,” as a reflection of the enduring values of compassion, neutrality, and hope upheld by the Red Cross Movement globally for over a century.

Princess Ibanga commended the Nigerian Red Cross Society for its sustained humanitarian interventions, particularly during emergencies and periods of hardship.

She noted that Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda has institutionalised humanitarian governance through the establishment of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to strengthen support for widows, the elderly, persons with disabilities, displaced families, and low-income households.

According to her, the government’s intervention programmes are deliberate investments in humanity and social development, stressing that meaningful governance must prioritise the welfare and dignity of the people.

The Commissioner also applauded donor agencies, development partners, and humanitarian stakeholders for supporting community resilience and social protection efforts across the state, while urging individuals and corporate organisations to continue supporting humanitarian causes.

She further reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to sustained collaboration with the Red Cross and other humanitarian organisations, and encouraged youths to embrace volunteerism and selfless service.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Hon. Sam Ikon, disclosed that the branch has supported over 700 flood-affected households in Ibesikpo Asutan, Ibeno, and Eastern Obolo within the past year, while also activating Red Cross units in about 145 schools across the state.

He revealed that Akwa Ibom has become a zonal relief hub for the South-South and South-East regions, with a new RUB Hall storage facility supported by the IFRC and the World Food Programme, but appealed for government support to provide security for relief materials stored at the facility.

Hon. Ikon also appealed for a permanent headquarters for the branch, noting that the organisation has operated from temporary and unsuitable facilities for 39 years. He explained that the current office on Aka Road, Uyo, lacks water supply, training space, and emergency drill facilities.

He further disclosed that the branch, despite having over 10,400 volunteers across the 31 local government areas, has not received government subvention in the past decade and lacks emergency response vehicles needed to access remote communities.

The Red Cross Chairman, called for statutory funding, mobility support, and disaster response equipment to strengthen the organisation’s capacity to respond to fires, floods, disease outbreaks, and other emergencies.

Delivering the keynote address, Prince Idiong emphasised the importance of humanity, volunteerism, unity, and collective responsibility in addressing humanitarian challenges, while advocating increased support for the programmes of the Red Cross.
