FORMAL UNVEILING AND DISSEMINATION OF THE AKS HIV STRATEGIC PLAN

The Akwa Ibom State Agency for the Control of AIDS (AKSACA), in collaboration with the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) and the State Ministry of Health, convened a one-day stakeholders' meeting to disseminate the Akwa Ibom State HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan (AKSSP) 2025–2027. The meeting brought together government officials, development partners, implementing partners, civil society organizations, community representatives, and networks to strengthen collaboration towards ending HIV as a public health threat by 2030.

In his opening remarks, the Hon. Commissioner for Health Dr Ekem Emmanuel John, represented by the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance Agency, Dr. Edikan Ekwere, stated that the meeting was strategic and a reaffirmation of the government's resolve under the leadership of Governor Umo Bassey Eno PhD., to confront HIV with renewed urgency and structured accountability. He added that the event reflects a deliberate shift from fragmented interventions into a coordinated, data-driven, and result-oriented framework that aligns both national priorities and global targets stored ending HIV as a public health threat.

He reiterated that while significant progress has been made in prevention, testing and treatment, HIV burden is still a public health concern that demands sustained political will, stronger systems, smarter investment, resources mobilization and thus, the need for proper follow up and implementation of the state strategic plan.

He re-affirmed that the Ministry of Health and all its agencies remain committed to integrating services within a stronger, more inclusive health system that guarantees equity, sustainability, and uninterrupted care for those in need. He urged every stakeholder to work together for sustainability and proper implementation of the plan

Akwa Ibom State Agency for the Control of AIDS (AKSACA), in collaboration with key stakeholders, officially commenced activities marking the 2025 World AIDS Day commemoration with a press briefing held at the prestigious AKSACA Conference Hall.
The event was attended by the AKSACA Project Manager; the NACA South-South Zonal Coordinator; representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO); Excellence Community Education Welfare Scheme (ECEWS); MAP-IT; CCCRN; Heartland Alliance; NEPWHAN; ASWHAN; members of the media; and other critical partners.
The gathering set the tone for coordinated advocacy, public awareness, and renewed commitments toward achieving an HIV-free Akwa Ibom State.
The 2025 World AIDS Day theme, “Overcoming Disruptions: Sustaining Nigeria’s HIV Response,” underscores the urgent need for stability, strengthened domestic ownership, and uninterrupted service delivery as the State advances toward epidemic control. It emphasizes the pivotal role of political leadership in driving policies that address structural inequalities and protect vulnerable populations ez.

To achieve meaningful progress, transformative solutions are essential—solutions that expand access to HIV services, eliminate stigma and discrimination, and uphold the rights of women, girls, and key populations who continue to face disproportionate barriers to healthcare.
