‎Uyo Legislative Council Scores Dr Uwemedimo Udo High on Project Delivery


‎As part of its constitutional oversight responsibility, the House Committee on Works, Housing and Transportation of the 8th Uyo Local Government Legislative Council on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, embarked on an inspection tour of ongoing and completed projects across Uyo Local Government Area.

‎The projects inspected include the Uyo City Hall, Golden Compassionate Home, a solar-powered mini water scheme, renovation of market buildings at Ikot Akpan Ediene, and 500KVA electricity substations at Nung Edong Ediene and Nung Udoe Ediene.

‎Led by the Chairman of the House Committee on Works, Housing and Transportation, Hon. Idiongo Mbosowo Udoma, the delegation was received at the project sites by the Dean of the College of Supervisors and Supervisor for Works, Obong Idara Akpan.

‎Addressing the councillors during the inspection, the Works Supervisor gave an overview of the ongoing and completed projects ready for commissioning by the Executive Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council, Dr Uwemedimo Udo.

‎During the tour, the councillors had firsthand access to the facilities and expressed optimism about the impact the projects would have on people at the grassroots level. They commended the quality and scope of the projects across the local government area.

‎Speaking after the assessment exercise, the Leader of the Uyo Legislative Council, Hon. Ekemini Bassey, expressed satisfaction with the level of development in housing, electricity supply, and water infrastructure across the communities. He described the progress recorded by the administration as impressive and commendable.

‎According to him, “For the first time since the creation of Uyo Local Government Area, councillors are navigating across communities to inspect numerous projects executed by the Chairman.”

‎Hon. Bassey commended Dr Uwemedimo Udo for his commitment to grassroots development and appealed to him to provide additional 500KVA substations across the 14 wards as constituency projects.

‎Similarly, Hon. Idiongo Mbosowo Udoma praised the timely delivery, quality of materials, and the dedication of the Works Department under Obong Idara Akpan, whom he described as the “engine room” of the administration’s infrastructural drive.

‎Obong Idara Akpan thanked the lawmakers for their oversight and described the visit as a demonstration of the cordial working relationship between the Executive and Legislative arms of government.

‎He noted that several other projects are still ongoing under the “Service Alone” mandate of the Chairman, Dr Uwemedimo Udo.

‎The oversight visit was attended by members of the Works Committee and other councillors of the 8th Uyo Legislative Council.

EULOGIES: UYO LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL HOLDS VALEDICTORY SESSION IN HONOUR OF LATE HON. SUNDAY EDET UDO

As part of its legislative responsibilities, the Uyo Local Government Legislative Council held a solemn valedictory session in honour of the late Hon. Sunday Edet Udo, in recognition of his contributions to grassroots governance and community development in Uyo Local Government Area. ‎

Until his demise, the late Hon. Udo served meritoriously as Ward Chairman in 1998. He also served as Chairman of the Task Force on Revenue Collection for one year before being appointed Chairman of the Special Committee on Revenue Mobilization. He later represented Uyo Urban Ward 1 as Councillor between 2008 and 2011, where he distinguished himself through dedicated service and commitment to the growth of the council area. ‎

‎The remains of the deceased lawmaker were brought into the hallowed chamber of the Legislative Council on Saturday, May 23, 2026, for the valedictory session. ‎

The solemn ceremony, which lasted for about an hour, was attended by former Chairmen of Council, former Councillors, political associates, family members, and well-wishers from across Uyo Local Government Area. ‎

‎In his tribute, the Leader of the Uyo Legislative Council, Hon. Ekemini Bassey, described the late Hon. Sunday Udo as “a man of honour, amiable character, and a distinguished public servant who served the people of Uyo diligently between 2008 and 2011.” ‎

He further conveyed the condolences of the 8th Legislative Council to the bereaved family and prayed for God to grant them strength and comfort during the difficult period of mourning. ‎
The Councillor representing the deceased’s ward, Hon. Eyo Dan, described the late lawmaker as a leader and seasoned revenue consultant who served with integrity and remained committed to the development of Ward 1 and Uyo at large. ‎

‎“Today, we stand with the family to bid farewell to a leader whose impact will continue to be remembered,” he stated.

‎Also speaking, the Personal Assistant to the Governor and former Councillor of Ward 1, Hon. Prince Ndor, described the deceased as a humble and respectful man who mentored and inspired many people. ‎‎According to him, “His integrity and dedication earned him the trust of the people and paved the way for his emergence as Councillor.” ‎

The Special Adviser to the Executive Chairman of Uyo and former Councillor of Ward 1, Hon. Kufre Mendie, noted that the late Hon. Udo was a peace-loving leader who stood firmly against violence and promoted unity and harmony within the community. ‎

Former Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council, Rt Hon Justin Ekong, also paid glowing tribute to the deceased, describing him as a man of peace and sound administrative ability who played key roles in stabilizing conflicts whenever they arose. ‎
‎He prayed for God to grant the departed eternal rest. ‎

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Edidiong Udo expressed appreciation to the 8th Uyo Legislative Council for honouring the memory of his late father through the valedictory session. ‎‎He stated that although the family remains deeply saddened by the painful loss, they are grateful for the show of love, honour, and solidarity extended to them. ‎

The plenary session was subsequently adjourned after deliberations and items on the order paper were duly exhausted. ‎

Uyo Legislative Council Moves for Oversight on Council Projects

The 8th Uyo Local Government Legislative Council has resolved to commence oversight functions on projects executed across the 14 wards of Uyo Local Government Area under the administration of the Executive Chairman, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo.

The resolution was reached during plenary presided over by the Leader of Council, Hon. Ekemini Bassey, held at the Legislative Chambers in Uyo on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

Proceedings commenced with official prayers and the presentation of the House proceedings before deliberations centered on developmental projects executed within the council area. Members of the House raised concerns and emphasized the need for proper assessment, monitoring, and evaluation of life touching projects spread across the 14 wards to ensure quality delivery and accountability to the people.

Following extensive deliberations, the House resolved to refer the matter to the Committee on Works and Transportation for necessary legislative oversight and further actions in the coming weeks.

The plenary session was subsequently adjourned, and to be reconvene as date will be communicated by the Clerk of the Legislative Council, Mr. Nsidibe F Essien

The 8th Leader of Uyo Legislative Council, Hon. Ekemini Bassey, on Monday, May 18, 2026, joined prominent stakeholders and dedicated members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at Lutheran Primary School, Itiam Etoi, Uyo, for the conduct of the Uyo Senatorial Direct Primary Election.

The exercise witnessed party faithful gathering in unity and enthusiasm to participate in the democratic process aimed at electing the party’s senatorial flag bearer.

The primary election was conducted in a peaceful, orderly, and transparent atmosphere under the supervision of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the APC Returning Officer, Mr. Unyime Etim.

Members of the party expressed confidence in the credibility of the process, which was characterized by calmness, fairness, and a strong demonstration of internal party democracy.

At the conclusion of the exercise, Distinguished Senator Aniekan Bassey emerged victorious with overwhelming support from APC members and delegates present, reaffirming the confidence and trust reposed in his leadership, representation, and commitment to the advancement of the people. His victory was greeted with excitement and celebration by supporters and party faithful.

Also present during the exercise were the Ward 4 APC Chairman, Mr. Oku Edet, Ward 4 APC Political Leader, Hon. Nsikak Nyong, Ward 4 Personal Assistant to the Governor, Mr. Raphael Offong, alongside several respected party elders, women, and youths.

Today, the Leader of the Uyo Legislative Council, Hon. Ekemini Bassey, attended the Valedictory Executive Council Session held in honour of the late Hon. (Mrs.) Gloria Monday Udofia, former Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council who served meritoriously from 2001 to 2002.

The solemn gathering was a moment of reflection, tribute, and appreciation for the impactful leadership and dedicated service rendered by the late former chairman to the people of Uyo Local Government Area. Her legacy of commitment, grassroots development, and public service within the political and administrative space will live ever in our heart.

Hon. Ekemini Bassey joined other government officials, political leaders, family members, and well-wishers in paying their last respects and celebrating the life and contributions of the late Hon. (Mrs.) Gloria Monday Udofia.
