EULOGIES: UYO LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL HOLDS VALEDICTORY SESSION IN HONOUR OF LATE HON. SUNDAY EDET UDO
As part of its legislative responsibilities, the Uyo Local Government Legislative Council held a solemn valedictory session in honour of the late Hon. Sunday Edet Udo, in recognition of his contributions to grassroots governance and community development in Uyo Local Government Area.
Until his demise, the late Hon. Udo served meritoriously as Ward Chairman in 1998. He also served as Chairman of the Task Force on Revenue Collection for one year before being appointed Chairman of the Special Committee on Revenue Mobilization. He later represented Uyo Urban Ward 1 as Councillor between 2008 and 2011, where he distinguished himself through dedicated service and commitment to the growth of the council area.
The remains of the deceased lawmaker were brought into the hallowed chamber of the Legislative Council on Saturday, May 23, 2026, for the valedictory session.
The solemn ceremony, which lasted for about an hour, was attended by former Chairmen of Council, former Councillors, political associates, family members, and well-wishers from across Uyo Local Government Area.
In his tribute, the Leader of the Uyo Legislative Council, Hon. Ekemini Bassey, described the late Hon. Sunday Udo as “a man of honour, amiable character, and a distinguished public servant who served the people of Uyo diligently between 2008 and 2011.”
He further conveyed the condolences of the 8th Legislative Council to the bereaved family and prayed for God to grant them strength and comfort during the difficult period of mourning.
The Councillor representing the deceased’s ward, Hon. Eyo Dan, described the late lawmaker as a leader and seasoned revenue consultant who served with integrity and remained committed to the development of Ward 1 and Uyo at large.
“Today, we stand with the family to bid farewell to a leader whose impact will continue to be remembered,” he stated.
Also speaking, the Personal Assistant to the Governor and former Councillor of Ward 1, Hon. Prince Ndor, described the deceased as a humble and respectful man who mentored and inspired many people. According to him, “His integrity and dedication earned him the trust of the people and paved the way for his emergence as Councillor.”
The Special Adviser to the Executive Chairman of Uyo and former Councillor of Ward 1, Hon. Kufre Mendie, noted that the late Hon. Udo was a peace-loving leader who stood firmly against violence and promoted unity and harmony within the community.
Former Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council, Rt Hon Justin Ekong, also paid glowing tribute to the deceased, describing him as a man of peace and sound administrative ability who played key roles in stabilizing conflicts whenever they arose.
He prayed for God to grant the departed eternal rest.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Edidiong Udo expressed appreciation to the 8th Uyo Legislative Council for honouring the memory of his late father through the valedictory session. He stated that although the family remains deeply saddened by the painful loss, they are grateful for the show of love, honour, and solidarity extended to them.
The plenary session was subsequently adjourned after deliberations and items on the order paper were duly exhausted.
