FOOD SAFETY: VETERINARY DIRECTORATE TRAINS STAFF ON DISEASE PREVENTION, CONTROL

In a concerted effort to strengthen food safety, safeguard public health and prevent the spread of animal diseases, the Directorate of Veterinary Services, Ministry of Agriculture has organised a comprehensive capacity-building workshop for members of staff.

Addressing participants on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at the Ministry Headquarters, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Offiong Offor, called on veterinary professionals and other stakeholders to intensify efforts towards preventing animal diseases and promoting food safety.

Offor particularly stressed the importance of the proper administration of veterinary medications, noting that appropriate use of veterinary drugs is essential to protecting both animal and human health.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. (Mrs.) Atim Okoko, the Commissioner encouraged participants to actively engage in the training and make practical use of the knowledge and skills acquired from the resource persons.

In his opening remarks, the Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Teddy Essien, expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Ministry for approving the training, while urging veterinary professionals to remain committed to improving animal health, strengthening disease control measures and ensuring the safety of food consumed by the public.

In their separate goodwill messages, representatives of the World Health Organization, Mabel Amarachi; the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Daniel Daniel; and the Poultry Association of Nigeria, Alexander Bassey, among others, advocated for the establishment of a well-equipped veterinary laboratory to facilitate the testing and diagnosis of infected animals and ensure that appropriate treatment is administered.

The workshop featured presentations by seasoned resource persons, including Dr. Aniefiok Udom, Dr. Aniefiok Okokon, Bishop Dr. Edem Offiong, Dr. Nchiek Eneh, Mr. Gabriel Udoh and Dr. Abraham Ajibola, who shared valuable insights on food safety, animal health, disease prevention and control.

The capacity-building workshop was attended by the State Chairman of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Dr. Ekaette Augustine; her counterpart from Edo State, Dr. Sampson Agbese; Directors in the Ministry; veterinary Doctors and other relevant stakeholders.

The training underscores the Ministry's commitment to strengthening veterinary services, promoting responsible animal health practices and protecting the public through improved food safety and effective disease prevention and control.

The Commissioner for Agriculture in Akwa Ibom State, Dr. (Mrs.) Offiong Offor, has dedicated her prestigious Public Service and Agricultural Development Award to Governor Umo Eno and stakeholders in the agricultural sector for their unwavering support and contributions toward food sufficiency and agricultural growth in the State.

Offor received the award from the School of Science, Akwa Ibom State College of Education (AKSCOE), Afaha Nsit, during her First International conference held recently at the institution’s Mini Theatre.

Expressing gratitude to God and the organisers for the recognition, the Commissioner described the honour as encouraging, noting that the award reflects the collective efforts of government and agricultural stakeholders committed to the development of the sector.

She specifically appreciated Governor Umo Eno for his continuous support and commitment to agricultural transformation in Akwa Ibom State, which has enabled the Ministry to successfully implement impactful agricultural programmes and initiatives.

Delivering the keynote address at the event, the former Provost of the institution, Prof. Moses Inyangabia, who spoke on the theme: “Transforming Education for the Digital Age: Leveraging Technologies for Global Impact." emphasized the need for educational institutions to embrace innovation, digital knowledge, and technology-driven learning as vital tools for sustainable development and global competitiveness.

Also speaking, an academic from Akwa Ibom State University, Dr. Uduak Utibe, who presented a lecture on “Transformation in Education,” advocated practical-oriented education, curriculum review, promotion of local technology, and self-confidence among students as critical factors for enhancing educational value and relevance.

The event attracted prominent personalities from the academic community, including the Acting Provost of AKSCOE, Prof. Jeremiah Iweh, and the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Obio Akpa, Prof. Joe Essien, who served as Chairman of the occasion, alongside other distinguished scholars and guests.

AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER CHARGES STAFF ON TEAMWORK, DEDICATION TO DUTY

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Offiong Offor, has called on staff of the Ministry of Agriculture to embrace teamwork, professionalism, and dedication in the discharge of their responsibilities to enhance service delivery and achieve the ministry's objectives.

Offor made the call on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, during a two-day capacity-building workshop organized for staff of the Directorate of Agriculture at the Green Field, Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat Complex, Uyo.

She commended the Directorate of Agriculture for the training programme, describing it as a commendable effort towards improving staff capacity and productivity.

The Commissioner appreciated other directorates within the ministry for prioritizing continuous learning and professional development.

Emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration in the workplace, Offor urged staff to foster cordial relationships and resolve differences amicably in the interest of the ministry's growth and effectiveness.

"Working together as a team, I am confident that we will successfully achieve the goals and aspirations of the ARISE Agenda," she stated.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. (Mrs.) Atim Okoko, described the workshop as timely and essential, noting that inadequate knowledge and skills can adversely affect performance and productivity.

Okoko commended the Director of Agriculture, Mrs. Grace Udoma, for the training stressing that, the training was a worthwhile investment that would equip participants with valuable knowledge and practical insights necessary for improved agricultural service delivery.

Earlier, in her welcome address, the Director of Agriculture, Mrs. Grace Udoma, expressed appreciation to participants for their commitment and encouraged them to remain attentive and actively engage throughout the training in order to acquire knowledge that would enhance their effectiveness and efficiency on the job.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Comrade Richard Oscar, lauded the Commissioner for approving the workshop and appreciated the Permanent Secretary, directors, and staff for their support toward the success of the programme.

Comrade Oscar expressed confidence that participants would leave the workshop better equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills to improve their performance and productivity, in line with the workshop's theme, "Building Staff for Enhanced Productivity."

During the two-day capacity-building workshop, participants received lectures on Public Service Guidelines and modern agronomic practices from seasoned resource persons, including Mr. Udeme Umoren, Mr. Akwaowo Obop, Mr. Ibanga Akpan, Mr. Etima Ituen, Mr. Victor Tom, Mr. Okon Udo, Mr. Samuel Unyienyin, Dr. Patricia Ekop, Mr. Ernest Awakessien, and Mr. Victor Okon.

The well-attended workshop attracted directors from the ministry as well as staff drawn from the Directorate of Agriculture, providing a valuable platform for knowledge sharing, capacity enhancement, and professional growth.

REACH OUT TO FARMERS IN RURAL COMMUNITIES
..Dr. Offor Charges New AFAN State Executive

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Offiong Offor, has charged the newly elected State Executive Officers of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, to intensify engagement with farmers in rural communities and ensure they remain informed about agricultural programmes and activities across the State.

Offor gave the charge on Tueday, June 9, 2026, when the newly elected AFAN State Executive paid her a courtesy visit at the Ministry of Agriculture Headquarters.

Congratulating the officers on their successful emergence, she urged them to make meaningful contributions that would positively impact farmers at the grassroots level throughout the State.

The Commissioner emphasized the need for all commodity associations under AFAN to remain vibrant and active, encouraging the leadership to engage members through productive programmes and initiatives.

"I urge you to keep members engaged with meaningful activities. Avoid politicising the association, as this could create unnecessary divisions and friction among members," she cautioned.

Offor further assured the delegation of the Ministry's continued partnership with AFAN and other agricultural groups in advancing the agricultural component of Governor Umo Eno's ARISE Agenda.

The Don also called for unity, selfless service, cooperation, and commitment among members, assuring them that any perceived challenges or differences would be addressed through dialogue and mutual understanding.

Earlier in her remarks, the State Chairman of AFAN, Evangelist Philomena Ntuen, explained that the visit was aimed at formally introducing the newly elected State Executive Committee to the leadership of the Ministry following their recent election into office.

She disclosed that farmers across the State turned out massively for the association's maiden general congress held earlier in the day, describing the turnout as a clear demonstration of support and acceptance of the new leadership.

Evangelist Ntuen reaffirmed AFAN's commitment to partnering with the Ministry whenever called upon, assuring that the association would render selfless service towards the successful implementation of the ARISE Agenda.

Notably, the current AFAN State Executive Committee, led by a woman for the first time in the history of the association in Akwa Ibom State, was elected and sworn into office a few weeks ago.

The meeting was attended by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. (Mrs.) Atim Okoko, Directors of the Ministry and other members of the AFAN State Executive Council.

DR. OFFOR COMMENDS ORUK ANAM LGA CHAIRMAN ON AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Offiong Offor, has commended Chairman of Oruk Anam Local Government Area and other Chairmen across the State for their growing commitment to agricultural production and food sufficiency.

Offor gave the commendation on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, during the official launch of improved high-yielding, high-starch cassava varieties for farmers in South-South and South-East Nigeria, held at the Assured Model Farm in Ikot Akpan Essien, Oruk Anam Local Government Area.

She urged Local Government Council Chairmen to sustain their partnership with the State government in promoting agricultural development, increasing food production, and ensuring food sufficiency across Akwa Ibom.

According to the Commissioner, the event reflects Governor Umo Eno’s commitment to agricultural development and economic diversification under the ARISE Agenda.

She particularly lauded the Chairman of Oruk Anam Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Sunday Festus, alongside other council chairmen who have established farms in their respective local government areas in support of the State’s agricultural vision.

Offor noted that their investments are contributing significantly to agricultural transformation, strengthening value chains, creating employment opportunities, and improving food availability throughout the State.

“For the Chairman of Oruk Anam Local Government Area to cultivate over 27 hectares of land demonstrates remarkable passion and dedication to agricultural development. I commend his efforts and those of other Local Government Chairmen who have embraced this vision,” she stated.

The Commissioner highlighted key achievements recorded in the agricultural sector under Governor Eno’s administration, including the Back-to-Farm Initiative, the School Agriculture Programme, the tree crops revolution, input distribution initiative, Ibom Model farm, the disbursement of a ₦2 billion grant to farmers, and the establishment of an equipment leasing facility designed to improve access to modern farming machinery among other

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Chairman of Oruk Anam Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Sunday Festus, disclosed that all farm produce displayed during the event was harvested from the council-owned Assured Model Farm.

Festus explained that the farm project was inspired by Governor Eno’s ARISE Agenda, particularly its Agricultural Revolution pillar, and was established to boost food production for both household consumption and industrial use.

He revealed that the farm spans over 100 hectares, with approximately 27 hectares currently under cultivation, while plans are underway to develop the remaining portions of the land.

Speaking on the achievements of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), one of the institute’s Directors, Dr. Ekanem Udoabasi, stated that IITA has developed and released 54 improved cassava varieties over the years, characterized by high yields, resistance to pests and diseases, and increased profitability for farmers.

Udoabasi further disclosed that between 2020 and 2024, the institute introduced several improved cassava varieties, including Game Changer, Baba 70, Biggie, and Renewed Hope, all of which were showcased during the event.

Also speaking, the Paramount Ruler of Oruk Anam Local Government Area, His Royal Majesty Okuku J.J. Obosi, applauded the council chairman for his achievements in agricultural development.

The Royal father, who described himself as an active farmer, said he had cultivated one of the improved cassava varieties with an impressive yield of 2.4 meters in width and 68kg in weight in a stand of the variety.

The event featured a tour of the farm and exhibitions of cassava-based products by agricultural stakeholders and dignitaries in attendance.

AKSG FLAGS-OFF 2026 COCOA PLANTING SEASON

…Dr. Offor Reaffirms Government’s Commitment to Expanding Tree Crop Cultivation

The Akwa Ibom State Government has officially flagged-off the 2026 Cocoa Planting Season, reaffirming her commitment to boosting cocoa production and expanding tree crop cultivation across the State.

Speaking during the distribution of cocoa seedlings to farmers at the Ministry of Agriculture's Cocoa Nursery in Odoro Ikpe, Ini Local Government Area, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Offiong Offor, described the exercise as a strategic step towards actualizing the State’s tree crop revolution initiative recently launched by Governor Umo Eno in Uyo.

Offor said that over 100,000 cocoa seedlings will be distributed to cocoa-producing communities across the State this year, stressing that the annual intervention demonstrates the Governor’s unwavering commitment to agricultural development.

“Governor Umo Eno undertakes this initiative every year because he recognizes agriculture as a critical investment in the future of our State. We are not merely planting cocoa trees; we are planting hope, creating wealth, and securing a prosperous future for Akwa Ibom. Together, we will continue to strengthen the agricultural sector and improve the livelihoods of our people,” she stated.

The Commissioner further highlighted the Governor’s passion for agriculture, citing the disbursement of grants to farmers, provision of improved farm inputs, enhancement of school’s agricultural programmes, revitalization of extension services, and other interventions aimed at transforming the sector.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Ini Local Government Area, Hon. Inibehe Uma, commended the Commissioner for her outstanding performance.

Uma reiterated the Council’s commitment to supporting Governor Eno’s agricultural transformation agenda.

Also speaking, former Commissioner for Agriculture and Dean of Commissioners, Associate Prof. Glory Edet, applauded Governor Eno for placing agriculture at the heart of the ARISE Agenda.

Edet, emphasized that agriculture remains the backbone of economic growth and food sufficiency, adding that no nation can thrive without a vibrant agricultural sector.

She further appreciated the Commissioner for organizing the distribution exercise on a day that coincides with the celebration of Governor Eno’s third anniversary in office, describing it as a fitting demonstration of the administration’s commitment to rural development and economic empowerment.

In their separate goodwill messages, the Chairman of the Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria in the State, Mr. Ekikere Bassey, and Chairman of the Cocoa Association of Nigeria, Mr. Etieno James, commended the State Government for its continued support to cocoa farmers.

They pledged to make effective use of the seedlings to increase cocoa production for both local consumption and export.

While acknowledging the various forms of support received from government over the years, they also advocated for policies that would further strengthen cocoa production and enhance the value chain.

Representing the United States Department of Agriculture–Lutheran World Relief TRACE Project, Agricultural Extension Officer, Mr. Olua Eze, lauded Governor Eno’s consistent support to cocoa farmers.

Eze noted that the level of commitment demonstrated by the Akwa Ibom State Government is commendable and uncommon in many other States.

The Clan Head of Ikpe, His Royal Highness Monday Udo, expressed gratitude to the government for the intervention, while describing cocoa as a highly rewarding cash crop that generates sustainable income, explaining that this has encouraged many members of the community to embrace its cultivation.

GOV. ENO FLAGS-OFF MASSIVE OIL PALM INITIATIVE TO CREATE WEALTH

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially flagged off a major tree crops revolution initiative with the procurement of 620,000 high-yield oil palm seedlings for distribution to farmers across the State.

Speaking during the launch held on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the premises of Akwa Ibom Agricultural Development Programme (AKADEP), Eno described the initiative as a strategic move aimed at strengthening food sufficiency, economic empowerment, and sustainable agricultural development under the ARISE Agenda.

He stated that the programme reflects his administration’s commitment to restoring agriculture to its pride of place while creating lasting wealth for citizens across the State.

“Oil palm in this region, particularly in Akwa Ibom State, is more than just a crop. It represents our heritage, enterprise, prosperity, and communal way of life. Today, we are returning to our roots and reviving a legacy that sustained generations before us,” the Governor said.

According to him, beneficiaries of the programme have already been carefully profiled, with 500 households selected from each local government area to ensure effective monitoring, guidance, and successful implementation of the initiative.

The Governor encouraged citizens to embrace agriculture and take full advantage of the opportunities created through the initiative, assuring that his administration remains committed to supporting hardworking individuals and families.

He also applauded the strong partnership between the Akwa Ibom State Government and the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR), noting that the collaboration would guarantee the timely supply of quality seedlings required for the success of the programme.

The Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Agriculture has held a strategic meeting with Directors of Agriculture across the Local Government Councils to strengthen collaboration and promote agricultural development in the State.

Addressing the Directors during the parley, held on Wednesday at the Ministry's Conference Room the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Offiong Offor, emphasized the need for continuous support in achieving the goals of Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda.

Offor described the Directors as the “eyes of government at the grassroots,” stressing the importance of working closely with them to effectively verify and compile farmers’ data across the State.

The Commissioner commended the Directors for their prompt response to the invitation and urged them to ensure that the required data of farmers, is submitted on or before May 31, 2026.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Atim Okoko, described the Directors of Agriculture as key stakeholders who maintain close contact with farmers at the grassroots level.
