AKSG FLAGS-OFF 2026 COCOA PLANTING SEASON

…Dr. Offor Reaffirms Government’s Commitment to Expanding Tree Crop Cultivation

The Akwa Ibom State Government has officially flagged-off the 2026 Cocoa Planting Season, reaffirming her commitment to boosting cocoa production and expanding tree crop cultivation across the State.

Speaking during the distribution of cocoa seedlings to farmers at the Ministry of Agriculture's Cocoa Nursery in Odoro Ikpe, Ini Local Government Area, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Offiong Offor, described the exercise as a strategic step towards actualizing the State’s tree crop revolution initiative recently launched by Governor Umo Eno in Uyo.

Offor said that over 100,000 cocoa seedlings will be distributed to cocoa-producing communities across the State this year, stressing that the annual intervention demonstrates the Governor’s unwavering commitment to agricultural development.

“Governor Umo Eno undertakes this initiative every year because he recognizes agriculture as a critical investment in the future of our State. We are not merely planting cocoa trees; we are planting hope, creating wealth, and securing a prosperous future for Akwa Ibom. Together, we will continue to strengthen the agricultural sector and improve the livelihoods of our people,” she stated.

The Commissioner further highlighted the Governor’s passion for agriculture, citing the disbursement of grants to farmers, provision of improved farm inputs, enhancement of school’s agricultural programmes, revitalization of extension services, and other interventions aimed at transforming the sector.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Ini Local Government Area, Hon. Inibehe Uma, commended the Commissioner for her outstanding performance.

Uma reiterated the Council’s commitment to supporting Governor Eno’s agricultural transformation agenda.

Also speaking, former Commissioner for Agriculture and Dean of Commissioners, Associate Prof. Glory Edet, applauded Governor Eno for placing agriculture at the heart of the ARISE Agenda.

Edet, emphasized that agriculture remains the backbone of economic growth and food sufficiency, adding that no nation can thrive without a vibrant agricultural sector.

She further appreciated the Commissioner for organizing the distribution exercise on a day that coincides with the celebration of Governor Eno’s third anniversary in office, describing it as a fitting demonstration of the administration’s commitment to rural development and economic empowerment.

In their separate goodwill messages, the Chairman of the Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria in the State, Mr. Ekikere Bassey, and Chairman of the Cocoa Association of Nigeria, Mr. Etieno James, commended the State Government for its continued support to cocoa farmers.

They pledged to make effective use of the seedlings to increase cocoa production for both local consumption and export.

While acknowledging the various forms of support received from government over the years, they also advocated for policies that would further strengthen cocoa production and enhance the value chain.

Representing the United States Department of Agriculture–Lutheran World Relief TRACE Project, Agricultural Extension Officer, Mr. Olua Eze, lauded Governor Eno’s consistent support to cocoa farmers.

Eze noted that the level of commitment demonstrated by the Akwa Ibom State Government is commendable and uncommon in many other States.

The Clan Head of Ikpe, His Royal Highness Monday Udo, expressed gratitude to the government for the intervention, while describing cocoa as a highly rewarding cash crop that generates sustainable income, explaining that this has encouraged many members of the community to embrace its cultivation.

The highlight of the event was the symbolic presentation of cocoa seedlings and other agricultural inputs to farmers, marking the official commencement of the 2026 Cocoa Planting Season in Akwa Ibom State.

GOV. ENO FLAGS-OFF MASSIVE OIL PALM INITIATIVE TO CREATE WEALTH

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially flagged off a major tree crops revolution initiative with the procurement of 620,000 high-yield oil palm seedlings for distribution to farmers across the State.

Speaking during the launch held on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the premises of Akwa Ibom Agricultural Development Programme (AKADEP), Eno described the initiative as a strategic move aimed at strengthening food sufficiency, economic empowerment, and sustainable agricultural development under the ARISE Agenda.

He stated that the programme reflects his administration’s commitment to restoring agriculture to its pride of place while creating lasting wealth for citizens across the State.

“Oil palm in this region, particularly in Akwa Ibom State, is more than just a crop. It represents our heritage, enterprise, prosperity, and communal way of life. Today, we are returning to our roots and reviving a legacy that sustained generations before us,” the Governor said.

According to him, beneficiaries of the programme have already been carefully profiled, with 500 households selected from each local government area to ensure effective monitoring, guidance, and successful implementation of the initiative.

The Governor encouraged citizens to embrace agriculture and take full advantage of the opportunities created through the initiative, assuring that his administration remains committed to supporting hardworking individuals and families.

He also applauded the strong partnership between the Akwa Ibom State Government and the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR), noting that the collaboration would guarantee the timely supply of quality seedlings required for the success of the programme.

He further reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to invest on economically beneficial projects.

In her remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. (Mrs.) Offiong Offor, lauded the Governor for his consistent investments in agriculture, highlighting initiatives such as the equipment leasing facility, farmer support grants, agricultural inputs distribution, and the Ibom Model Farm project.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area and State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, commended Governor Eno for what he described as a bold and visionary step toward repositioning oil palm production in the State.

Earlier, the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR), Dr. Gold Leonard Isona, applauded Governor Eno’s foresight and unwavering commitment to empowering citizens through agricultural transformation.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of All Farmers Association of Nigeria, and other farming groups, Evangelist Philomena Ntuen applauded the Governor for being passionate about agriculture, as demonstrated in his support to farmers, pledging their unalloyed loyalty to his administration.

The Paramount Ruler of Uyo, Edidem Sylvanus Okon, also appreciated the Governor’s developmental strides, while pledging the support of traditional institutions towards the success of the programme.

…Dr. Offor Advocates Continuous Support for the ARISE Agenda

The Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Agriculture has held a strategic meeting with Directors of Agriculture across the Local Government Councils to strengthen collaboration and promote agricultural development in the State.

Addressing the Directors during the parley, held on Wednesday at the Ministry's Conference Room the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Offiong Offor, emphasized the need for continuous support in achieving the goals of Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda.

Offor described the Directors as the “eyes of government at the grassroots,” stressing the importance of working closely with them to effectively verify and compile farmers’ data across the State.

The Commissioner commended the Directors for their prompt response to the invitation and urged them to ensure that the required data of farmers, is submitted on or before May 31, 2026.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Atim Okoko, described the Directors of Agriculture as key stakeholders who maintain close contact with farmers at the grassroots level.

Okoko noted that their involvement is essential to the success of the exercise.

Speaking on behalf of the Directors of Agriculture, the Director of Agriculture, Udung Uko Local Government Area, Apostle Friday George, appreciated the Commissioner for convening the meeting and assured the Ministry of their commitment to carrying out the assignment diligently and within the stipulated timeframe.

The meeting also featured the distribution of data Verification and collection forms to the Directors of Agriculture for the compilation and onward submission of farmers’ data to the Ministry.

The Ministry of Agriculture was filled with joy, music and heartfelt celebrations as the Permanent Secretary, Directors, and members of staff gathered to honour the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Offiong Offor, on the occasion of her birthday.

AKS-RAAMP Project to Engage Young People

…Dr. Offor, as ILO Delegation Visits Ministry of Agriculture

The Akwa Ibom State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to empowerment through the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), with plans to engage young people in sustainable road maintenance activities.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Offiong Offor, made this known while receiving a delegation from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) at the Ministry’s conference room.

Offor explained that the initiative is designed not only to preserve critical road infrastructure but also to create meaningful employment opportunities for youths residing along designated road corridors.

According to her, involving young people in routine maintenance tasks, such as desilting drainage systems, sweeping, and general upkeep, will ensure the longevity of the assets while providing a steady source of income.

She further disclosed that Akwa Ibom is among the pilot states selected for the project, expressing confidence that its success would pave the way for expansion to additional communities.

Commending the ILO for its collaboration, the Commissioner highlighted Governor Umo Eno’s strong commitment to strategic partnerships that drive sustainable development.

Speaking on behalf of the ILO delegation, Team Lead Shailendra Kumar noted that the organisation’s mandate spans social justice, employment generation, protection of fundamental human rights, and the promotion of social dialogue.

In a related remark, ILO team member Mito Isukamoto emphasized the organisation’s partnership with the World Bank in advancing employment through road maintenance schemes.

Isukamoto explained that consistent maintenance not only reduces long-term infrastructure costs but also saves up resources for investment in other sectors of the economy.

He revealed that the project will cover approximately 2,400 kilometres of roads, alongside capacity-building programmes aimed at equipping young people with relevant skills.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Emem Bob, expressed appreciation to the ILO team and reiterated the state government’s commitment to the initiative.

Bob noted that an existing framework for road maintenance is already in place and that the government is working closely with the ILO team to ensure success of the project.

The Commissioner for Labour and Manpower Planning, Hon. Ikoedem Ekong, assured that his ministry would continue to collaborate with the ILO, particularly in addressing concerns related to child labour.

The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Atim Okoko, the State Project Coordinator of RAAMP, Mr. Gideon Akpan and other officials.

.. Agric Commissioner Charges NYCN Leaders in Ini

The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Offiong Offor, has called on the leadership of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ini Local Government Chapter, to serve as exemplary ambassadors of society in the discharge of their responsibilities.

Offor gave the charge when she received members of the council during a familiarisation visit at the Ministry’s Conference Room.

Describing their emergence as leaders as both an honour and a responsibility, the Commissioner congratulated the executive members and emphasized the critical role of youths as the driving force of societal development.

“Youths are the engine room of any progressive society. You must distinguish yourselves through discipline, dedication, and impactful service,” she stated.

She further urged the group to align with and support the leadership of the country and the State, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Governor Umo Eno, noting that collective support is essential for sustained development.

Offor, expressed delight at the council’s planned solemn assembly, and pledged her support for the programme.

Earlier, the Coordinator of NYCN in Ini Local Government Area, Comrade Offiong Asuquo, explained that the visit was aimed at strengthening ties with the Ministry and updating the Commissioner on the council’s activities.

He also used the opportunity to inform her about the chapter’s upcoming solemn assembly and youth sensitization programme, appealing for her support to ensure its success.

GOVERNOR UMO ENO COMMISSIONS 11KM RAAMP ROAD PROJECT
.. Reaffirms Commitment to Infrastructure Development

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, has commissioned the 11-kilometre Owouta–Nung Oku–Ekere–Afaha–Udo Eyop–Edeobom–Utuat Market Junction demonstration road under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure development across the State.

The commissioning ceremony took place on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at Edeobom 1 in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi said every Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom has benefited from impactful projects, including roads, schools, hospitals, and other people-oriented infrastructure aimed at improving the quality of life for citizens.

Governor Eno also highlighted recent strides in the agricultural sector, recalling the commissioning of Ibom Agricultural Equipment Leasing Limited a few days earlier, while announcing plans to launch an oil palm revolution initiative targeted at boosting food production and ensuring food sufficiency in the State.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Offiong Offor, commended the Governor for promptly paying the counterpart funding required for the project.

Offor noted that improved rural infrastructure would significantly reduce rural-urban migration by opening up economic opportunities in local communities.

She further disclosed that RAAMP has successfully delivered over 202 kilometres of rural roads across 18 Local Government Areas, while establishing 19 Road Maintenance Groups comprising 65 members across 14 LGAs to ensure sustainability and proper maintenance of rural roads.

She appreciated the State government, World Bank and French Development Agency for their support to the project, not forgetting the International Labour Organization.

The National Project Coordinator of RAAMP, Engr. Aminu Mohammed, described Akwa Ibom as one of the standout States among the 19 participating States, noting that its performance has earned it qualification for the second phase of the project, a clear indication of consistency and effective implementation.

Also speaking, the representative of the World Bank Country Director and Practice Manager, Mrs. Hannah, explained that the project integrates road construction, agro-logistics centres, and rural markets to stimulate agricultural productivity, increase income generation, and create more economic opportunities for rural dwellers.

Earlier in his remarks, the State Project Coordinator of RAAMP, Pastor Gideon Akpan, applauded Governor Eno for providing the enabling environment that allowed the project to be executed successfully in line with World Bank procedures and standards.

The Chairmen of Ibesikpo Asutan and Nsit Ibom Local Government Areas, Hon. Edidiong Inyang and Rt. Hon. Otobong Aaron, respectively, noted that the road project connects communities from Owot Uta to Edeobom 1, thereby strengthening economic and social ties between both LGAs.

They expressed appreciation to the Governor and pledged continued support for his administration.

LET’S ENCOURAGE PUPILS TO PRACTISE AGRICULTURE

…Agric Commissioner Charges Heads of Schools in the State

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Offiong Offor, has charged Heads of Public Primary Schools in Akwa Ibom State to instill in pupils a passion for agriculture from an early stage of their development.

Offor gave the charge on Thursday, April 30, 2026, during the flag-off and distribution of improved farm inputs to public primary schools across the state, held at St. Athanasius Catholic Primary School, Nung Oku, in Ibesikpo Local Government Area.

She noted that the initiative represents a renewed commitment to raising a generation of young people who are practically equipped with life-sustaining skills and prepared to become future farmers.

The Commissioner commended His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, for approving the laudable initiative and for his consistent support to farmers and public schools in the drive towards food sufficiency.

Offor further explained that by empowering public schools and introducing the Young Farmers Club, the government is planting seeds today for a greener and stronger tomorrow.

Speaking on the purpose of the exercise, Mr. Richard Oscar recalled that the intervention is part of the Schools Agricultural Programme, initiated in 2014 as a five-year pilot scheme and sustained by the State Government from 2019.

Oscar added that the programme is intended to reawaken the consciousness of youths to embrace agriculture as a profitable business venture.

Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Rt. Hon. Anietie Etuk, represented by the Director, Green School & Climate Change Education Initiative, Mrs. Ubong Udoh, lauded the programme, noting that Public Primary Schools have consistently benefited from such empowerment initiatives.

In their separate remarks, the Head Teacher of St. Athanasius Catholic Primary School, Nung Oku, Mrs. Beatrice Nse, and the Village Head of Nung Oku appreciated Governor Umo Eno and the Ministry of Agriculture for their commitment to food production, promising their continued support.

The event also featured the presentation of an appreciation award to the Commissioner by the Iko Eyo Multi-purpose Cooperative Society in recognition of her performance.

GOVERNOR ENO COMMISSIONS IBOM AGRICULTURAL EQUIPMENT LEASING FACILITY
..Urges farmers to seize opportunity for increased productivity

In a decisive step to strengthen agricultural productivity and ensure food sufficiency, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, has commissioned the Ibom Agricultural Equipment Leasing Facility.

Speaking during the event at Ekpri Nsukara, Uyo, on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the Governor called on farmers across the State to take full advantage of the facility, describing it as a strategic intervention aimed at transforming agriculture.

Governor Eno noted that the facility, first of its kind in the state, fulfills a key campaign promise and underscores his administration’s commitment to agricultural development.

He emphasized that the initiative is designed to help farmers transition from subsistence farming to large-scale commercial agriculture, ultimately leading to higher yields and improved livelihoods.

To make the service accessible, the Governor announced that farmers will be able to lease equipment at a highly subsidized rate of 50 percent, while users will be responsible for fueling the machinery during use.

Setting the tone for the ceremony, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Offiong Offor, described the facility as a major milestone in the government’s deliberate efforts to modernize agriculture and position it as a profitable and sustainable sector.

Offor noted that, the center will serve as a hub for agricultural mechanization, offering equipment leasing for land preparation, as well as extension services to farmers, co-operatives, and agribusinesses.

She added that the project aligns with the Agricultural Revolution pillar of the ARISE Agenda, complementing other initiatives such as the distribution of improved farm inputs, farmer grants, capacity-building programs, school agricultural schemes, the Ibom Model Farm, and the tree crop development program.

The Commissioner commended the Governor for delivering on his promises and expressed confidence in continued support from the farming community.

Also speaking, the Village Head of Ekpri Nsukara, Uyo, Eteidung Emem Asikpo, expressed gratitude to the Governor for locating the project in the community and assured that the facility would be protected for the benefit of the State.

In his goodwill message, spokesperson for commercial farmers, Mr. Hogan Bassey, noted that tractor hiring currently cost as much as ₦150,000 per hectare, describing the new subsidized arrangement as a significant relief for farmers.

Speaking on behalf of the facility’s staff, the Manager, Mr. Iffiok Ekot, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to manage the center, pledging to ensure proper maintenance and efficient operation of the equipment.

The facility is fully equipped with administrative offices, a modern maintenance workshop, tractor sheds, low-bed trailers, a fuel station, security and safety systems, a fleet of tractors fitted with tracking devices and other essential implements.
