Apple has agreed to a $95 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit over privacy concerns related to Siri, its virtual assistant. The lawsuit alleged that Siri was inadvertently recording private conversations without users' consent and sharing these recordings with third-party contractors.

If you’ve used Siri on your iPhone, iPad, or other Apple devices between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, you might be eligible for compensation! Each user could receive up to $20 per device, with a maximum of five devices per individual.

While Apple denies any wrongdoing, this settlement highlights the ongoing conversation about privacy in our tech-driven world. The proposed settlement still needs court approval, and a hearing is scheduled for February 14, 2025.

DANGOTE REFINERY STARTS PRODUCTION OF PETROL

AI Can Implant False Memories

Researchers have found that AI chatbots powered by large language models can significantly increase the creation of false memories in humans. This is concerning because false memories could lead to incorrect information being used in important situations like police interviews.

The study had 200 participants watch a video of a crime. They were then split into four groups:

1. Control group - answered questions without any AI interaction
2. Survey group - answered misleading questions in a survey
3. Pre-scripted chatbot group - answered misleading questions in a chatbot
4. Generative chatbot group- interacted with an AI chatbot that used a large language model

The generative chatbot group had nearly 3 times more false memories than the control group, and 1.7 times more than the survey group. 36.8% of responses to the generative chatbot were false memories that persisted even after one week.

The researchers found that people who were less familiar with chatbots but more familiar with AI in general, and those more interested in crime investigations, were most susceptible to AI-induced false memories.

These findings highlight the need to carefully consider the use of advanced AI technologies, especially in sensitive contexts like police interviews. Ethical guidelines and legal frameworks may be needed to mitigate the risks of AI influencing human memory and decision making.
