09/10/2024

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended Dr. Joseph Akpan, a lecturer and former Head of the Department of Pharmacology, over alleged misconduct involving the alteration of exam scores. This was disclosed by the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, during a press briefing on Wednesday in Calabar.

According to the Vice Chancellor, Akpan allegedly manipulated 235 out of 242 result scripts for the course “Introduction to General Antimicrobial Pharmacology (PHM 311).” Akpan also allegedly awarded marks to two students who did not participate in the exam. The misconduct was discovered after only five of the scripts were found to be marked without any alterations.

The university’s Senate Examination Misconduct Committee (SEMC) investigated the case, and Akpan reportedly admitted to inflating scores in order to “protect the image of the department,” a justification management found unacceptable.

As a result, Akpan has been removed from his roles as Head of Department and Coordinator of PHM 311 and has been suspended from duty, effective October 8, 2024. His responsibilities will be reassigned to other qualified lecturers within the department. He has also been instructed to stay away from the university, except when responding to official inquiries from relevant committees.

30/09/2024

Following the announcement made on August 22, 2024, regarding the increment in school charges, the leadership of the University of Ilorin Students’ Union (SUG) has successfully negotiated a reduction in fees after several engagements with the University Administration. This outcome reflects the Union’s dedication to addressing the welfare of its members amid the financial challenges many students are currently facing.

The Union acknowledged the concerns raised by students in response to the fee hike and worked tirelessly to secure a reduction of 20-30% in school charges. The Students’ Union also received assurances from the University that there will be no hidden fees imposed at either the departmental or faculty levels.

In addition to the reduction, the administration has committed to ensuring that students receive value for the fees they pay. This includes providing uninterrupted Wi-Fi internet connectivity, adequate water supply, and enhanced security measures to safeguard lives and properties on campus.

The Union also encourages students to take advantage of the Federal Government’s newly introduced Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to help support their education.

The leadership of the SUG thanked the University management for its openness and cooperative approach, and reiterated their commitment to always prioritizing the interests of students.
