Assalamu Alaikum,

1.0 welcome

I would like to start by expressing gratitude to Almighty ALLAH for sparing our lives and for granting us the opportunity to gather here today. It is my singular honor and pleasure to welcome you all to the matriculation ceremony of our newly admitted students in the 2025/2026 Academic Session.

Today is in deed a special day, as we are gathering here today to witness the beginning of a great journey. It is an important journey to us as a University, to many parents and guardians, and to our newly admitted students as well.

2.0 The Matriculation and Studentship!
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen and most importantly, our newly admitted students.
While ‘Matriculation’ might sound like a formal esoteric and complicated word, what it represents is actually quite simple and also incredibly powerful. Matriculation is essentially the con ferment of studentship status
to newly admitted students. It symbolizes a new chapter in your lives, as you officially become students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.

In essence, until this morning, you were merely applicants who had successfully earned a place to study here at Usmanu Danfodiyo University. A place, I most say, you earned through hard work, dedication and sacrifice. Many tried, but only few of you who possess the necessary criteria were chosen. I therefore, encourage you to be proud of this achievement and I congratulate you all in this regard.

A central theme in matriculation is the Oath. I would like to therefore emphasize on the significance of the Oath you have taken. Firstly, it is patient for me to once again reiterate that by the oath you have taken, you have crossed a significant threshold. You are no longer merely admitted, you are now full members of our University Community. More importantly, from this moment on, you hold the rights, responsibilities and privileges that comes with being a student of this great University.

Moreover, the Oath you took is a promise; a commitment to pursue your studies with integrity, to revere this institution and to make the absolute most of the opportunity offered to You. I would like to assure you that, in return, the University promises to support you, to challenge you and to help you grow, into thought of capable scholars and individuals ready to make a difference in your respective communities and even the world over.

3.0 Brief on the University!

As we welcome you into the family of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, I would like to give you a brief history of this place; a place that will be your second home for the next few years.

The Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto ( Formerly named ‘University of Sokoto’ until the change of name in 1988) is one of the four second generation Universities established in 1975 by the federal government of Nigeria. At that time, three University Colleges were also upgraded and became full-pledged Universities. These seven Universities became popularly known as ‘seven sisters’ or ‘’ Second Generation Universities’’. These are: The University of Sokoto ( renamed in 1988 as Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto); the University of Maiduguri; the University of Port-Harcourt; Bayero University,Kano; the University of Calabar; the University of Jos and University of Ilorin.

The University is Unique among its pears in the sense that of all the second generation Universities; it is the only one that started from the scratch. In fact, by the time the pioneer VC was appointed, the University was no more than a concept or an Idea; unlike the other Six Sisters which had been Colleges of older Universities or college of Advance Studies or had inherited physical structures from where they started to Operate.

During its first convocation ceremony held on 22nd November, 1980, the University graduated its first set of students; a total of Seventy-Two(72) students graduated during the period. Now the University is graduating thousands every Year.

The University Started to function at a temporary site, earlier referred to as the City Campus, now renamed Mahdi Adamu Campus. Student enrollment into the University started in October,1977 in the Faculties of Arts and Islamic Studies, Social Sciences, Education and Extension Services and Science; and and actual teaching began on 20th October, 1977 with 93 Undergraduate students and 102 enrolled in to Pr-degree programs. Movement to the Main Campus began in 1982.

Currently 2026, the University has a total of 17 Faculties, a College of Health Sciences (CHS), A College of Postgraduate Studies, School of Medical Laboratory Sciences, School of Public Health, 15 Research Centers/Institute, Central Research Laboratory and Quite a number of other academic and Non-teaching Units. It is therefore, a pride of the founders of this university, and every citizen of this country, to see the height we have attained so far.
