**LASUCOM Hosts LRCN National Workshop on AI, Data for Library Services**
The Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) Library is currently hosting the second of three nationwide workshops organised by the Librarians Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) to strengthen the capacity of library and information professionals in the use of data and artificial intelligence (AI) for library services.
The six-day workshop, which features both theoretical and practical sessions focused on emerging technologies, data-driven library services, and the responsible use of AI, runs from Sunday, 2nd to Friday, 7th August 2026, and was formally opened on Tuesday, 4th August, by the Provost, Prof. Olufemi Idowu, who was duly represented by the Deputy Provost, Prof. Sunday Soyemi.
Prof. Soyemi, while welcoming the Council members, participants and other stakeholders to the College, conveyed the Provost’s sentiment on the importance of well-equipped libraries to academic and research development, particularly in medical education where access to current, reliable and evidence-based information is essential to academic and professional development.
“You need a good library for research, especially in a medical school like this and we must continue to strengthen our libraries and ensure that they are equipped to meet the needs of today’s researchers and students” he said
In his address, LRCN Registrar - Ambassador Abdullahi Jafaru Wase commended LASUCOM for hosting the workshop and for the hospitality and accommodation provided for participants, while expressing appreciation to guests and stakeholders for their support.
The LRCN Registrar highlighted the Council’s mandate to regulate and professionalise the Library and Information Science sector in Nigeria through the certification and registration of qualified librarians, development of professional standards, accreditation of Library and Information Science schools, monitoring and evaluation of libraries, continuous professional development and maintenance of professional discipline.
He noted that the Council had certified 9,758 librarians between 2005 and 2025, describing the initiative as central to standardising librarianship practice and ensuring quality service delivery across the country.
He added that LRCN had also reviewed LIS curricula to align with contemporary academic standards and undertaken sensitisation and capacity-building programmes for professionals and stakeholders nationwide.
The workshop is the second in a series of three national editions, following the first held in Imo State, with the final edition scheduled for Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
The programme is set to feature in depth sessions on data and artificial intelligence for library services, while subsequent sessions have focused on areas including data ethics, deploying data for library impact, responsible AI and AI-powered data analysis
